Nothing has changed, since I can remember ... people go out and buy what's on offer, no research, they just expect the glossy new thing to be wonderful ... but that statement is coming from someone who has a different perspective from consumers!

... I am hoping this newbie (if you pardon the expression) will be curious enough to try it out. ...

Unfortunately, I think he has more money than curiosity. He just bought a new Windows computer. ::)

OK so I have a total newbie trying out Beryl for me on a Dell Latitude C640. I just handed it to her today and went over some of the details with her about it. I even informed her she is my guinea pig. Told her we need opinions and views from a "NEW USER from Windows" perspective. She is willing to try it and check it out.

She commented on the wallpaper I chose for her, said she liked it so far... (Whatever) Now I just hope she will have the time to use it.

I will keep you informed of her progress. TTYL

I believe in going cold turkey. No dual booting.  8)

Windows 8 huh? Well I am sure at one point he will bother you again about it. Windows 8 is ok but it also has the flaw of being windows. Inherently flawed. Now you will have to explain the dual boot to him. That should be interesting. Good luck.

I think that what you have there is pretty intuitive, and I am hoping this newbie (if you pardon the expression) will be curious enough to try it out.

I would explain to him that using Beryl is just like when you began using Windows XP, Yes unfortunately you may have to sort of reteach yourself how to use this different operating software system But the good news is that it is free. If you (He) can use windows then you (He) can use Beryl or LL 2.0.

You could then broaden the explanation a little by saying the only thing that is changed is what the names of some of the menu items are referring to.  i.e. control panel is now the settings etc...

Let him know that he has already grasped the main or basic concept of an operating system by clicking on this menu item to do this and clicking on another menu item to do that. They all just have different names. Menu is the other Start button. as an example.

Hope that helps, that is how I explained it to a girlfriend of my wife and she seemed to grasp it well. (Not meant to mean that girls are not smart) She was nearly completely shall we say computer stupid. Now she is trying and I think even getting it after I explained it to her that way.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. Here is what I settled on:

"Microsoft 'has ended' support for Windows XP http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/end-of-support.aspx. Which means your computer won’t be getting any software updates including security updates. That would leave your computer running Windows XP even more vulnerable to virus and malware.

Now, you have only few options to replace Windows XP. And those are:

 1.  Continue running Windows XP and make your computer un-secure and unusable
 2.  Upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8 and pay at least $100 and more for an antivirus system and office products (my computer could not run Windows 7 or 8 and I doubt yours can either, my comment)
 3.  Switch to Linux and enjoy the freedom along with your saved money

Wondering about option 3 and thinking if you should really switch to Linux from Windows XP? Let me help you in making your mind. Do you use your computer mainly for surfing internet, watching movies, listening to music, do some regular work in office etc? If the answer to the question is yes, you can switch to Linux without thinking twice. Don’t be afraid. Linux is no more only geeks’ playground. You don’t need to be a command line ninja or super hacker to use Linux. Normal human being use Linux too. Using desktop Linux is as easy as any other operating system." http://itsfoss.com/linux-replace-windows-xp

This is a little old but very basic and would probably still be helpful.

Thanks, I have looked at Linux Help Guy, a.k.a Puppy Linux World a.k.a. Sneeky Linux reviews and several others and and the http://mylinuxexplore.blogspot.com but I think they will be over his head as well as the LL install guide.

I think he will need a review make for someone who doesn't even know what Linux or what his own OS is.

I was hoping Sneeky Linux had one but I guess not.

Maybe other members using this distro longer than me have better links for you.

I guess the install guide is too tuff?
