I know it's from the Dark Side but Wine must be the app that sealed the Linux deal for X number of people I know.

Most of them were saying "Linux Lite is cool BUT I have to use Windows for ONE "insert name of crappy old Windows program here". Ok, we test it in Wine.. works 100%?... BAM another happy Linux user, legaly freed from the capitalism shackles of a certain monopolistic software company ;)

I also have to check those music players, I miss XMPlayer and my cool visual plugins. *sad*

Cheers and have a good week end!

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! :)
My fellow "Linuxers", what are your favourite apps? I'm asking for those ones you install on whatever distro you're using at the moment according to your needs and likes as well as those ones you've discovered in the way.

OpenZone cursors

Opera browser (prefer for YouTube, VPN, bookmarks and organization, style, speed/its much faster)
Firefox browser (prefer for searches, tutorials, forum)

Thunderbird mail - remove calendar/organizer. Set to read plain text only.Change spam filter actions.

Audacity
VLC + restricted extras, codecs
EasyTAG
YouTube to MP3

ClipGrab
SimpleScreenRecorder

VirtualBox
gedit, plus add my preferred template

Gnu image manipulation software (GIMP) - change it to single window mode.
GIMP is special to me as it is my only break thru in to the Linux or Open Source worlds, they made plugins of my makeup pallettes, the pallettes had over 9000 downloads, with a lot of positive feedbacks from home users, professional photographers, studios, and some model companies. I dont know how many d/l of the plugins.
Also in one banner contest they had, I had one banner showcased for a week with the other peoples banners, it rotated each persons banner at the top of the home page which I know happens often but it was still feeling very positive for me.

fsearch - first time using on this Linux Lite version, for @Jerry trial , I like it and will continue to use it in future installs.

I'd echo previous posts recommending Clementine as a music player.

Honourable mention for puddletag, a simple but invaluable app for cataloguing and tagging your music collection.

My other favourite is FastStone Image Viewer.  Designed for Windows, it is almost the only reason why I have Wine on my Linux system.

FastStone provides both the facilities to organise photos (numbering/dating/renaming) and a range of options for tweaking images (cropping, adjusting colour, etc).  As an organiser it is more flexible and less intrusive than Picasa used to be.  As an image-processing app it is hugely less complex than Gimp.

I have tried Shotwell, Ristretto and Digikam, and also XnView.  But FastStone offers more versatility and more options than these, while remaining user-friendly.  Now if only the FastStone people would develop a version for Linux!

Simple classic Linux applications I use regularly: scalpel, nmap, chntpw, dmidecode, x11vnc, xming, fim, gnome-commander

Hey @trinidad  that's quite a nice list. I wish I knew about scalpel before, I accidentaly deleted some files which I couldn't recover, it happened like a month ago or so, it's not like they were critical files or something but still. I did use a couple of tools but they weren't as user-friendly as I wished, I don't know if scalpel is but I'd had liked to try it and find out for myself. Now that you mentioned gnome-commander I remembered another couple of apps I forgot to put on that list: double commander and XFE file manager. I also agree with you on Linux Tweaks being a great app, I use it regularly and am really happy with it. :)

@Ottawagrant   Coupled with VLC, Audacious and all the neccessary codecs sound editing is a breeze. Very easy to use combination of applications. Can even build system sounds from midis.

My favorite app for music is Audacious & the plugin's that come with it. Reason: You won't find a music player that is as light on system resources. Raises your CPU 1 maybe 2%. The 'shuffle music' feature actually works. When you load a folder of music it gives you the total time of music in that folder. (Winamp used to do that). It will also show you the artwork, if it's in the ID3. It also got a recent upgrade to version 3.9. Straightforward app that works well.

Please just list your favorite applications. If you object to a particular application, state your reason and provide sources to educate people.

Good idea for a thread :)

@Moltke
Clementine is already in LL Software Update, so it's just one click away.
Hi @bonnevie
Yes, you're right. I just checked and there it is. I didn't remember it was there lol. Thanks for the tip! :)

Grrrrr, Frostwire.  No.  Just no.
Hahaha... @RandomBoy you really have a thing against frostwire hahaha I wonder if you had such a bad experience with it...But you know, I've found that it really is a great app.

Frostwire is unethical and depending on how it's used, illegal in many areas.  It's not just any Peer-to-peer sharing software, it allows and even encourages piracy (movies, music, even porn).
So does any torrent client out there. It's upon users to decide whether to cross or not legal/ethical boundaries, I don't see any difference between using frostwire or bittorrent or deluge or transmission which comes pre-installed in so many Linux distros, since all it takes is to visit one of the so many torrent sites all over the web, download a magnent link for whatever it is people want to download and that's it, that simple.
Quote
High risk stuff, and LL should have nothing to do with it
Under this logic no torrent client should be allowed to use in any OS out there.
EDIT: oh! And I almost forget it; when installing frostwire you have to check that box accepting and stating that you won't use it for ilegal/piracy purposes, so you saying that
Quote
it allows and even encourages piracy
is simply not true.
Cheers! :)

Frostwire would definitely be one of the apps that I would find suspect of heavy resource usage, as well. I'd have to add Tixati to that list and Krita also.

1) The application I really liked and miss the most is Remmina which has yet to reappear in Debian stable.

2) An application I really like and use regularly (in Debian and Ubuntu not LL) is gnome-boxes, simple and convenient with easy USB switching and solid qemu underpinnings and continues to improve regularly.

3) XFCE terminal. Should be default in LL.

4) CherryTree, one of the easiest applications to derive a timeline presentation from.

5) *Lite Tweaks along with Lite Updates * Two of the most functional and well thought  out GUI utilities in the Linux world today. Deserve an award.

6) Simple classic Linux applications I use regularly: scalpel, nmap, chntpw, dmidecode, x11vnc, xming, fim, gnome-commander

7) Startpage search engine

Applications it would be nice to have:

1) A full featured WYSIWYG html editor and web page builder.

2) Better SMS support for desktop phone messaging.

Applications that should just disappear altogether:

1) Plymouth

2) Screensavers in general (Debian window shade screenlocker is the simplest and best and can be configured for smartcard, and/or fingerprint now)
