My research shows that the series 6 versions require a processor with at least two cores. My AMD TF-20 only has one core.
AMD TF-20 was not a high performance CPU even when new and suggests the system may be quite old.
It may not run Linux Lite version 6 satisfactorily so sticking with version 5 is probably wise for the time being.
The roadmap gives Linux Lite 5.x end of support as April 2025.
I'd rather do that than buy new hardware

Does it make sense to install using the same version 5 media and then do a system update?
Yes, though if your first install was LL 5.0 and you are now 5.8 via in-series upgrades, then using the 5.8 iso would cut out the in-series upgrade.
You'd still need to run updates for all the patches.

VLC that comes with LL should not need deleting and re-installing.
Using plug-in media shouldn't give permissions issues.
It is a balance between the time and effort required to look into multiple problems with no guarantee of fixing them versus a clean slate.
From posts seen on other forums, check and use the Lite Software for common applications like Wine rather than installing them ad-hoc.
Please consider using 'Backups' (aka deja-dup) for your home directory and 'System Restore Utility' (aka Timeshift) to give some protection for your system files.
This is for all uses, but even more so if you like to experiment.
