OK, on a wing and a prayer, I took the plunge and decided to follow gold_finger's instructions at https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/suggestions-and-feedback/grub-quirk/msg2431. The pleasing aspect is that I can now boot into LL.
Whilst the LL Help Manual is the best in the business, I just think mention should be made in the sub-section "Install" that problems may/will occur with GRUB if LL is installed firstly and another distro is installed secondly for dual booting. I understand this has been done purposely to make it easier for those wanting to dual boot with Windows and fair enough, however those intending to dual boot after LL has been installed should be warned about this IMHO.
Many thanks to gold_finger  :)

Thanks for your reply, however when it comes to "mounting, unmounting, partitions etc", I'm all at sea. I really need someone to respond directly to my problem with step by step instructions. I'm finding the threads provided confusing to follow and don't necessarily relate to my situation. It would appear there are a number of ways of going about rectifying and that is what concerns me. I hate to think of having to do a fresh install.

Linux Lite's grub like to be the master grub... Installing LL last no problems, when you install something after LL there are a couple hiccups...
Form my recollection nothing too terrible to recover from.. It has been discussed before.. I'll see if I can dig a thread up..

Here's one to get you started:

I've just found this at https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/suggestions-and-feedback/grub-quirk/msg2431 by gold_finger. Will I need to modify anything that gold_finger has suggested?

For reasons I won't go into, I decided to install Linux Mint 17.3 alongside LL 2.8. Everything proceeded smoothly, but when the GRUB menu displayed and when I tried to run LL, I received an error message: file name expected.

I've never had issues with dual-booting previously and am somewhat concerned presently. I've checked on the forum and have found this issue mentioned before - it appears to be a bug in GRUB however I'm not sure if previous problems are similar to mine. One suggestion was to post the results of sudo update-grub - here they are:

paul@paul-desktop ~ $ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for paul:
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-32-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.19.0-32-generic
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.elf
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
  No volume groups found
Found Linux Lite 2.8 (14.04) on /dev/sda1
done
paul@paul-desktop ~ $

I'm not the brightest spark going around and would appreciate step by step instructions.

Thanks
Paul
