My brother and I feel the same way about the online tax route. He has another older (prob an xp version) laptop lying around just for that reason. However knowing that he does not read this forum I can safely say that I succeeded in converting him to linux.

What surprised me was that he's already updating it himself and with by just changing the icon he already feels at home with LL. He say's it's faster than what he was using before on the same machine.

He's the type that has very short temper when things don't go right (if you know what I mean) Also when we were about to install a Cannon mp250 it just worked and he was surprised. Very uneventful.

Thanks again and as soon as I have a bit of spare time I'm sending another donation. Thanks for the reply and sorry I didn't get back sooner.

Thanks again on the distro Jerry.

For taxes, I prefer the desktop version over the web based option.  The desktop version usually only works with Windows or maybe Macs.  I don't like dual booting, so I used the Windows 7 license I have to create a Windows 7 virtual machine using VirtualBox.  I installed my tax software there.  You might consider the same.

Tax software is so year specific, and it's unlikely Wine will keep up with that.  Meaning, by the time you can get your tax software to work using Wine, you'll be in another tax year.

Installing ufile 2015 didn't work this time. It seems that they have changed the software program to look like their online website. Meaning the Ufile software now takes advantage of the .net framework...

Quote
FCL provides user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. Programmers produce software by combining their own source code with .NET Framework and other libraries. .NET Framework is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform. Microsoft also produces an integrated development environment largely for .NET software called Visual Studio.

I suspect they and all the other tax software programs that offer online services adapting to changes made with CRA.

2014 looked closer to a program compiled and ran natively and wine seemed to have the ability to run it, but now as it looks to me that the software is more like a offline browser that takes advantage of xml style webpages. In other words the software purchased looks identacle to the online free Ufile service.

To my brother. Talk about a windows die hard. Well not really. He's been watching me distro hop for years now and after telling him what windows has been up to he feels a bit concerned.

So I had my LL 2.6v  on a thumb drive made with the system back utility and we tried it on his laptop that he uses windows 7 on. He was pleasantly surprised how fast it booted. However the one thing he thought he needed windows for was to do his UFile taxes.

After using wine and installing it and worked he is seriously thinking about trying LL. Did I mention he's real CHEAP! haha  So in my opinion if he can do it then anyone can.

So in a few weeks (in his own due time) don't want it to be only my idea why he's using LL, we will be doing an install.

Should be fun. We'll convert the world one brother at a time right? haha

Cheers!

I'll keep anyone here interested updated on how things go.......
