I completed MD5SUM on the original iso before I tried to install it. I did not check SHA256 key. However, the first download did drop connection two or three times and I had to resume, but it checked out after the download. The SSD was brand new and unallocated. I had no idea if that was part of the problem or not, so I finally created a couple of partitions, knowing that LL would reformat the disk anyway. Since I wasn't sure what was causing the install issue, I just tried to change every parameter that I had control over. I don't know if it was the new iso, unchecking updates, formatting the SSD, or all three, that made the difference. It just finally worked after 10+ attempts, that included unchecking update boxes previously.

Thanks Again!

You're welcome.  Glad it is sorted.
Similar experience with Orca. When it was first introduced, I clicked on it out of curiosity and then struggled find how to turn it off.

Part of the 'hangs at the updates and other software' problem is that it is hard to reproduce.

Can you recall how the brand new disk was originally set up according to gparted and what changes you made before the successful install ?

An iso download can be verifying by checking the MD5SUM or SHA256 key.  If you still have the original downloaded iso file used in the first attempt, please run the check on it to see if it got corrupted.
That would eliminate a bad download as a possible cause in this case.

I don't think checking (or not checking) the options to download updates/3rd party software triggers this problem, but can't rule it out.

Thanks for the help!

The SSD is brand new. Even though some instructions I read said that Linux would automatically configure the SSD, I took your advice and used GParted to configure it before trying another attempt at installing. I also came back to the Download page and downloaded 6.4 from a different U.S. mirror. After beginning the install, I opted to NOT have updates downloaded with the install. Then 6.4 finally installed and I updated it manually.

On a humorous note, I accidentally started Orca Screen Reader and it drove me nuts trying to turn it off. Found a webpage that had the keyboard shortcut, so I was able to end that misery.  :57:

Overall, very happy with LL. It has taken an old laptop I had sitting around and has made it usable again.

Thanks for the help!

Be sure to follow the manual advice on disabling Secure Boot, using UEFI and backing up anything important on the disk before starting.

Reports of installations hanging at the 'Updates and Other Software' crop up but don't seem to have a definitive cause and cure.
The suspicion is that it is actually a problem with beginning the next section in which the disk set up is checked which makes it hang.

Has your SSD been used previously ?
One possibility is that if the disk has been used for Windows, Windows may have left the disk in an untidy state (e.g. hibernate files etc) which may upset the linux installer.

If you let the machine boot to the 'Live' desktop rather than doing a 'direct Install', you can have a look at the state of the SSD and tidy it up before starting the install using gparted or similar.

The Updates Error log you are getting is because the system hasn't been properly installed (yet) so nothing to worry about (yet).

Hello!

I'm brand new to Linux and am installing 6.4 for the first time on an old Dell Inspiron 1564, i3 HM55, 8 Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD (newly installed), ethernet connection. Using a Direct Install from USB, it hangs up during "Updates and other software." I unchecked "Install third party software," but it continues to hang up. When I try to install the updates from the Updates Window, I get the following message:

Like I said, I am brand new to Linux, even though I am a Windows advanced user. Any help, with instructions written for a Linux novice, would be SUPER appreciated!

Thanks!
