Hi Nublix. Just for info, yesterday I did a re-install of 3.2 over 2.8 with a similar arrangement to you - separate /home partition.  Like you I set formatting of /home off and the end result seems good. It nicely retained my custom desktop setup except for my desktop picture which was in in /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/ so got lost. I may find other glitches and will take the hint not to bother Jerry with them!
Desktop: Running LL5 on second HD in ACEPC model MK1: "Mini PC 4GB RAM 64GB ROM Windows 10 Celeron J3455 Processor Mini Computer Dual HDMI, Support mSATA / 2.5 inches SSD/HDD 4K, Dual Band WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0". Don't normally use the supplied W10. Also use LL on netbook (Using xrandr to "expand" the screen) and various old laptops. NAS drive and web server hosted by Raspberry Pi's.

Well, I followed the instructions (this time) and have installed 3.2 on this old box. Who knew kernel 4.4 x would work on it. Still, I had several hiccups along the way.

In tech years, the MB is quite old-2005 or earlier I think -so the computer just shuts itself down a few times during installation. Once during setting the partitions, twice when nearing the end of installation. I just start over again.

So now it seems fine. I updated fine and even got the widget on the dtop this time. But a couple of things I don't know if they should be of concern and if they'll keep popping up in the future.

1. At some point the keyboard stopped working and I could not right click with the mouse. Then I got this message:
Code: [Select]
Could not grab your keyboard. A malicious client may be eavesdropping on your session
or you may have just clicked a menu or
some application just decided to get focus. Try again.

2. I thought to restart but here's what I got for that effort:
Code: [Select]
Logout error. Received error while trying to logout.
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply,
the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Are these messages something to worry about?

I hard-rebooted and the mouse and keyboard were back in normal working order.

I tried to take a screen-shot of msg #2 which seemed fine but once I got back to the desktop, the file is now an empty text file.  ???.

I'm looking for the option to change the files in my home folder from icons to list. I don't see it in the usual place at the top right corner. Where may I find that?

There is no official, supported path from 2.x Series to 3.x
This has been made clear numerous times in the community. I don't want to come across as unhelpful. My best advise is to do a fresh install. That is the most efficient use of everyones time here :)

Oh, that's fine.  I'm dense that way.

So 3.2 was installed with my /home folder intact. Yet. . . as Jerry said there will be unexpected results.
First one I noticed: no Lite Desktop Widget in Sessions and startup. see

This is what is left of Lite Control Centre. I know it's no around. How do I get rid of this bit and how do I update Sessions and Start up?

Trivial issues -I think.
3.2 boots and loads just about as fast as 2.6 did.
Programs like Firejail had to be re-installed as it didn't come from Lite's repos in the first place.
Identified printer but having CUPS issues
Had to reset wallpaper

Can I downgrade the 4.4 kernel if it turns out to be causing problems with this old machine?

All in all, so far, even if I have to reinstall with creating new home partitions, I won't say it was  a wasted effort -just a learning one. Please, any input, suggestions are very welcome  :).

Thanks torreydale; I'll see how it goes with etcher.

Jerry: oh man. . . that sounds ominous or at the very least a wasted effort on my part.
You mean I'd perhaps not be able to use  /home from 2.6 with 3.2 and it'd be best to do an entire new install?

Still later I'll take a shot at it and see what gives. Will holler if it goes awry and I need help extricating myself.
Thx for the heads up though.

The differences between Series 2.x and 3.x are so vast, I doubt you're likely to get the result you're after, but I wish you good luck :)

That looks correct to me.  Might be simpler to use www.etcher.io to create your bootable usb drive.  I also use the Disks program to do that.  With Disks, you can restore the image file to the USB.  You'll see the option to do that in the settings.

After just about a yr of having LL2.6, I'm prepping this old machine to install 3.2 32bit but need to keep my home partition.

My partitions are:

Am I correct that  the following is what I need to do? -saw a vid on someone's post on this forum.

Something Else
select the Root partition  and use as ext 4 journalling . . .
select format, Mount as Root
Leave Swap as is
Home: use as ext 4 journalling . . .; do not format; mount point is /home; OK, Install Now; Continue

However, before I get there, in following the instructions in the online help manual to put the iso on the usb, don't I need to change this
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=linux-lite-2.8-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M to?
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=linux-lite-3.2-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=4M
my usb show up under sdb1
