After that I decided to install Ubuntu-Mate also, and now it comes to this.

I can boot directly to Ubuntu-Mate.
Windows 10 can start but have to wait a bit.
Linux Lite gone  (T_T)
What should I do?
Thanks.

Follow link provided by firenice -- that will get you fixed.

GParted it without formatting.
Booting with Windows 10 installer via USB recognized the unformatted partition by itself.

Thanks for the info -- I wasn't sure what Windows would need because it's been a while since I've installed it myself.

If you don't mind, after you fix booting LL issue, can you post output of this terminal command to show what your partitions look like on  drive?  (I'm just curious again.  Can be done from either LL or Ubuntu.)  Thanks.
Code: [Select]
sudo parted --list

For the images.. Try using imgur.. Upload image then copy the BBC code and paste into the forum...
If you had Windows 10, then Linux Lite then tried Ubuntu.. Grub probably needs updated/corrected.. There are several posts if this is what you need.. Linux Lite's grub likes to be the main/primary :)

Give this link a look over.. Specifically posts from gold_finger :)

Glad to here everything worked out.

Just out of curiosity, did Windows install to unformatted/unpartitioned space on the drive, or did you have to create an NTFS partition for it?

Thank you!
It works for me perfectly.
Took time to shrink the partition then finally it works as it should be.

Couple of other notes I forgot to mention before.

1.  In past, MS Windows always needed to be installed at beginning of drive.  I don't think that is the case for Windows 10, but just in case you may want to shrink the LL root from left to right -- resulting in the free space being at the beginning of the drive.  Boot one time into LL after doing that to make sure that ability to boot into it is still working.  If not, it can be fixed using your live LL dvd/usb, so don't panic if that happens.  (See below)

2.  The Windows install will wipe-out LL's boot loader and you won't have choice to boot LL anymore.  To fix that, boot again with your live LL dvd/usb and do the following using the terminal:

List partitions on the drive to find out which one is your LL root partition (the one formatted as "Ext4")
Code: [Select]
sudo parted --list

It may not be /dev/sda1 anymore, so look at output and find out which it is so you can plug the correct partition into the next command.  I'm going to use "X" in the spot where you need to put correct root partition number in next command.

Mount the LL root partition to the live dvd/usb environment
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt

Now install the grub boot loader which will replace the MS boot loader
Code: [Select]
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda

Unmount the root partition
Code: [Select]
sudo umount /mnt

Reboot computer without the live LL dvd/usb and you should now have boot menu choices for booting both LL and Win10.

If don't see choice for booting Windows, boot into installed LL, open a terminal and enter this command to add the boot choice.
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub

Next reboot should show both choices now.

@ stevedat,

Ok, you've only got a large primary partition for Root (498GB) and a logical Swap partition (2GB) and the drive is using MBR partitions.  Windows should be able to install and make 2 partitions for itself.  You just need to shrink the LL root partition first to make room for it.  Best way to do that is to boot with the dvd/usb you made to install LL and use GParted from there.  (You can't use GParted from your installed LL because it won't let you shrink the root partition while you're using it.)

Boot from live LL dvd/usb and open GParted.

Right-click on the root partition (/dev/sda1),  choose resize and shrink it by however much you want to dedicate to Windows.

Yes, it will take a while.  Just be patient and let it go until it tells you it's done.

I think you can just leave the space unformatted and direct the Windows installer to use that, but I'm not sure.  Try that and if it doesn't show a way to direct install to that area, cancel and use GParted again to create one large NTFS partition in that space.  Then try running Windows installer again and direct it to the NTFS partition.

Like I said before, there's no guarantee that something won't go wrong -- so backup anything important first.

...but it seems that there is something wrong with USB connection although I also installed needed extension pack but it's useless.

I was also unable to access any USB devices from the guest. I upgraded VirtualBox from v4 to v5 and USB now works.

Having said that, it can be a bit picky about returning control of the USB device to the host after exiting the guest, but that doesn't happen often and it works fine in the guest, which I think you were referring to.

stevedat,

You're welcome, but I meant for you to post back the output of "sudo parted --list" before trying to proceed.  I wanted to see that output first for two reasons:
  • It would confirm whether the drive was using MBR (msdos) or GPT partitions.  Your install options will differ depending on which of those is being used.  If your computer originally came with Windows 10 on it, there is a good chance that the drive was formatted as GPT.  If that was the case, then unless you purposely converted the drive to MBR, LL is installed on that GPT disk in legacy mode.  That's no problem.  BUT, if that is the case Windows can not be installed in that same mode.  It will only install to a GPT disk in UEFI mode.  You'll need guidance to get around that problem.
  • If MBR partitions are being used and all three of your LL partitions are "primary", you may run into problems trying to install Windows because it will want to make 2 partitions for itself.  There is a limit of 4 primary partitions on an MBR drive.  You'll need guidance to get around this problem too.  (If not all of your LL partitions are primary, then you won't have that problem.)
If you haven't already started, please post that output back here before you try anything.

Thank you.
I will try.
I didn't notice partitions are primary or logical and because it's quite strange to me ^^
When installing Linux Lite 2.6, I started from formatting the entire drive then separated /root, /home, and /swap  :'(
