Router is a hitron, wifi running through a Cisco switch

gonna go ahead with the install onto harddrive and see what work arounds can be done from there, seems like with what everyone has found so far it may be possible to get this card working

will post back after install is complete

I would try this in Terminal , wonder if you have bcmwl-kernel-source installed ;

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Let us know if it works .

Also , I would add inxi -F Terminal results in there , we might see the wifi driver in there .

Thanks for the great finds Rok, I'll be running those circles all night from here on out :P

And gold_finger, I will check it out on that search engine, thanks. I found something else old though in my /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

Basically it seems as if on boot up, it's removing iwlwifi, then runs /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211, could this blacklist file be blocking the machine recognizing the card at all?

I only started looking at it after reading this (someone with my exact card 43b1 finding a solution):
http://ubuntu.aspcode.net/view/635400140124705175500812/ubuntu-1304-on-alienware-m17x-r5

Think it's worth a shot on my machine?

Damn. I'll have to find some way around it.

Aside from constantly using ethernet cable, only option for wireless is probably to get a USB dongle.  Newegg has plenty of them and you can search through the reviews with keyword "linux" to find out which are best to get.  (Scratch that.  rokytnji just posted some info that might help just as I was about to post.  Looks like he might be on to something so hold off a bit.  Good job rokytnji!)

And the hassle of switching back and forth between the two installs wouldn't be so bad for me, since I use Linux about 90% of the time anyways.

Once you do get connected you can do the conversion -- so you wouldn't have to live with that forever.

Another question: in dmesg I'm seeing systemd-udevd[131]: renamed network interface eth0 to p2p1, haven't seen that before, any clues?

Have never seen that either.  Don't really know answer to that.  You could try plugging that into this search engine:  Linux Beginner Search Engine.

Broadcom was supposed to become Linux friendly so I bet there is a proprietary blob of firmware and driver supplied

Is it normal for no wireless tools to be installs with the LL live cds? I have tried almost every tool I can think of with none being installed.

Really sucks on this news, especially since everything else besides this wifi issue seems to be working just fine.

@rokytnji,

Thanks for helping out rokytnji.  I don't know any more than you do on this.  Doesn't appear that Broadcom is supported with Linux drivers and I don't know any way around that.

@amandasabroad,

As rokytnji pointed out your output (in red below)
Quote
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43b1] (rev 03)

when looked-up on the chart here:  http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Comparison_of_recent_drivers

shows that the card is not supported by any Linux drivers right now.

Unfortunately, you're probably going to have to use a USB wifi dongle with Linux on the computer.  Maybe at some later point in time your card will have a Linux driver built for it, but that doesn't appear to be the case as of now.

Don't know what you want to do at this point.  If you don't have access to an ethernet connection, you can still go ahead with install, but you won't be able to convert the installation to UEFI mode.  It will install and work as long as UEFI boot mode is off, but that means you will have to change boot modes every time you switch from Windows to Linux, or vice versa.  In UEFI mode you will only be able to boot Windows.  In Legacy/CSM mode it will only boot LL.  That's referred to as a "mixed mode" install and people normally don't want that because of the hassle of changing modes back and forth all of the time.

I don't know if this is an option for you or not, but maybe you could return the computer and get one that has a Linux compatible wireless card.  Something to think about before you try installing.  (If you do that, expand the shrunken Windows partition back to original size first.  If they see that you changed something on the drive they might use that as an excuse not to accept the return.)
Try Linux Beginner Search Engine for answers to Linux questions.

Thanks on the info, I do love getting my exercise in via hoops (preferably lit on fire). :P

Anyways, sniffing around trying to find out some more info. So far, it looks like my new machine doesn't have wl bcma brcmsmac and grepping through dmesg pulls up nada on wlan wl 80211. More fun: no iw iwlist iwconfig rfkill or wireless-tools currently installed.

Have yet to see what might be in the blacklist, and not sure what to look for in lsmod with everything else checked for.

Bwah, thanks for stickin with me on this guys :)
