Install Additional Software & Remove Additional Software has the same icon
Hence we may select wrong application at times

Therefore changing icon can be taken as first step

If the default settings upon installing of LL for the Whisker menu were "Show generic applications names" and "Show applications descriptions", it would solve the problem and (I think) be a simple fix.

It would also make the parts of Libre Office Suite clearer: Word Processor, Presentation, Spreadsheet, and Formula Editor.

How about 'Package Installer'

I say leave it as "Install/Remove Software".  LL is supposed to help bring Windows users over to the dark side, right?  Things need to be named so that ex-Windows users can relate.  "Package manager" sounds more like a jock strap than anything having to do with programs.  I say, keep it simple.  (Wait.  That's part of the LL logo, isn't it?  :) )

... renaming 'Install/Remove Software' to 'Synaptic Package Manager' would help the uninitiated? ...

I like Rob's idea or maybe just Package Manager to make it more generic.  8)

I like 'Package Manager'

Hello!

All this never confused me, but if it is confusing people, then perhaps renaming 'Install/Remove Software' to 'Synaptic Package Manager' would help the uninitiated?

As for Kaffeine, doesn't that require installing a bunch of KDE dependencies that wouldn't be used by anything else besides for programs that run under KDE? Wouldn't these KDE dependencies hurt the overall performance of Linux Lite?

Valtam, I am only a beginner with Python but if you can let know what what would need fixing and / or changing in lubuntu software center to make it workable, I can try and take a look although with my health at the moment I won't make any promises or guarantees.

Thank you for offering to help elija. Development requires a commitment to it's users, in this case LL folk. Forking LSC would require an indepth understanding of python code, if you have other python projects that you have either contributed to or developed exclusively I'd certainly be interested in seeing them :)

I am sort of agreeing with elija But I tend to understand what your saying there Valtam. I too have been confused at times and have even clicked on the wrong one. It is more clear with the look that elija has, there is a distinction of icons that is more readily understood than what is the default.

I will endeavor to try and come up with something unique?

ohjrson

The icon set I use is this one from gnome-look.org which I just install into my ~/.icons folder.

As I said, I just idly musing about the potential for confusion. OOps! I did not know that we were not supposed to use the Lubuntu and the Ubuntu software centres - I have both installed now and have used them a number of times...guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens...

As a newbie I was confused at first with the difference between the three install/remove software options - but only once...then the difference is pretty obvious.

BTW is there any way that I can make Kaffeine as the primary choice for playing Videos, it's so much faster and seems to be better than VLC?

Thanks.

:)

One last thought while I am being picky, would it be better for new users to have (a possibly re-branded) Lubuntu software centre replacing the slightly more scary looking Synaptic and giving it a name that suggests the now familiar concept of an app store?

We simply don't have the manpower at the moment to take on that task. If you know of someone who has the ability and time to do this, please let me know. Cheers :)

On a previous version of LL, we had a Lite Software Center (re-branded Lubuntu SC). I took Valtam advise and did not install either the Ubuntu or Lubuntu Software Center on this install. I did not either understand or remember why the Lite Software Center no longer exists or what problems using one of the other software centers caused. Don't need them now because I knew what software I wanted with this install and could get easily now with Synaptic.

Can someone explain what happened to the Lite Software Center and what problems using another one causes?
