What happens if you plug the external drive in and boot?

Hi all, I just encountered this error just now. My netbook now hangs on the feather upon boot. I have tried recovery mode but still it won't boot. It keeps showing the error: /media/user/EXTERNAL is not ready yet or not present. But that makes no sense as that was my external USB drive that I use to transfer files an is not connected to my netbook. My OS is not even on that drive, so I don't know why it's not booting like it should.   :(
