I have been using Linuxlite for a few years now and am currently using 4.0. I installed it last fall and haven't had any issues with it. Until today. This morning I shut down my computer normally, but when I turned it back on this evening, it asked me to login on startup; I had it set to log me in automatically, so I thought this was weird. But then it wouldn't accept my password. I made sure caps and numlock weren't on but it still won't let me in. I haven't done anything unusual lately or noticed any strange behavior until this happened. Can someone tell me what is going on? Have I been hacked? What can I do to get back into my computer?

Why are you trying to login to root user it is locked by default. Try to log in to your user which is not root. your account should be in the dropdown select your own account and then use the password you have.

Minesheep's advice was good! When the Login window appears, select the user, then enter the user's password.

There is no 'root' password, only sudo (users) password. You can only login as a user. The installed user in the beginning IS the one and only master password. If you are running live, the user is 'linux' no password required, just click on the Login button.

The problem was it wasn't accepting the correct used password, as if it had been hacked and changed and the automatic login option changed as well.

Run a manual fsck. Do you have more than one sudoer one set to autologin and the other not? Also try the name you installed with, not the user but the full name. Also see the link below for more info.
