Release Announcement
Linux Lite 8.2 Final is now available for download.
This is considered a minor release featuring Linux Kernel 7.3
![[Image: Screenshot-2026-10-31-22-39-36.png]](https://i.postimg.cc/5tZfDgXL/Screenshot-2026-10-31-22-39-36.png)
From this release on, we'll be changing the way we present each new release.
Each release will have:
- a full changelog (see below).
- a complete installed package list attached as a .zip file to each release thread.
- screenshots will appear less often and only if there is a major UI change.
Full changelog below:
Linux Lite 8.2
Base: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (Resolute)
Desktop: XFCE with LightDM
Codename: Hematite
Kernel: Linux 7.3 (Linux Lite Advanced Performance Kernels)
LINUX LITE HIGH PERFORMANCE CUSTOM KERNELS
Menu > System > Lite Kernel
The Linux Lite kernel is a custom Linux kernel built specifically for desktop and gaming use on everyday hardware. We build it ourselves from the mainline Linux kernel — downloaded direct from kernel.org and GPG-verified against the official kernel signing keys, then add a curated selection of the popular CachyOS kernel patches together with targeted configuration tuning to deliver a faster, smoother, lower-latency Linux experience out of the box. The configuration from the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS kernel is carried forward on top of the mainline source, so every driver and hardware feature you rely on is retained.
Two kernel flavours are available. The default linuxlite kernel is tuned for general desktop use and is what every Linux Lite installation boots into. The optional linuxlite-gaming kernel is offered after setup and is tuned for low input lag, smoother frame pacing and better Linux gaming performance — making it one of the best Linux kernels for gaming on supported hardware. See our full Linux Lite kernel comparison for a side-by-side breakdown of every setting.
The Two Kernels
linuxlite — default desktop kernel
This is what every Linux Lite installation boots into. It prioritises a smooth, responsive desktop experience for everyday tasks: web browsing, office work, media playback, and general use.
linuxlite-gaming — optional gaming kernel
This kernel goes further in reducing input lag and improving frame delivery. It is best suited to users who play games regularly or run audio/video production software where timing matters. It can be installed at any time after setup without removing the default kernel.
Both kernels take advantage of the EEVDF scheduler. On top of this, the gaming kernel only includes the full BORE scheduler modification (Burst-Oriented Response Enhancer).
BORE tracks each task’s burst time — how long it runs in short, intense bursts — and uses this to bias scheduling decisions. Tasks that have been waiting and then run in short bursts (like a desktop application repainting its window or a game processing a frame) receive a priority boost, keeping interactive work feeling snappy even under heavy background load. BORE is controlled by a dedicated CONFIG_SCHED_BORE kernel option and exposes several sysctl tunables under kernel.sched_bore for fine-tuning.
The two kernels differ in how aggressively they allow the scheduler to interrupt running work:
- linuxlite uses dynamic preemption, which balances throughput and responsiveness. It can switch between modes at runtime.
- linuxlite-gaming uses full preemption, which allows the kernel to interrupt almost any running task immediately. This reduces the worst-case delay before a game or audio application gets CPU time.
These kernels also ship with a new application - Lite Kernel Manager which has all of the features shown below:
For full Kernel details, please visit these 2 web pages explaining all the features.

Benchmarking
Lite Kernel Manager also features a benchmarking tool where people can upload their scores. This should present a unique opportunity for people to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their Kernel tuned systems.

LITE UPGRADE (8.0 > 8.2)
Menu > Settings > Lite Upgrade
> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates (you must reboot if asked to, otherwise continue to the next step)
> Set a Restore Point - Menu, System, Timeshift
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
> Reboot
Having problems upgrading?
First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.
should return:
Kernel upgrades are not included in Lite Upgrade. Enabling this globally could cause a significant number of computers to run into issues. "If it ain't broke..."
If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Software Sources.
Known Issues:
Place any issues in the appropriate Support section of the Forum (not in this thread). Thank you.
Huge thank you to our Sponsor:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 4gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command:
where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.
A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.
Recommended Computer Requirements:
1.5 Ghz Dual Core Processor or greater
4GB ram
40GB HDD/SSD/NVME
VGA, DVI, DP or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution

KERNEL (delivered as separate linux-image/linux-headers packages, managed via Lite Kernel Manager — not in the changelog set below):
Over the 8.0 series the Linux Lite kernel advanced through mainline 7.x to 7.3, built from the kernel.org mainline tarball (GPG-verified) plus a curated CachyOS patch subset.
Two flavours: linuxlite (desktop, mitigations on) and linuxlite-gaming (mitigations off + ORC + BORE scheduler on 7.3). NVIDIA proprietary support on the mainline kernel via the linuxlite-nvidia-kernel-patch package (see below).

* Rebrand the installer for the 8.2 release: branding.desc version /
versionedName -> 8.2 (linuxlite, linuxlite-oem, oem-firstboot), the slideshow
"Welcome to Linux Lite 8.2" / "Linux Lite 8.2 is built on Ubuntu 26.04" in
slideshow.qml, all 50 translation .ts, and the compiled .qm (recompiled with
lrelease). Community-count strings (18,000) left untouched.

* Fix encrypted installs failing at the very end with "Could not close
encrypted partition on the target system" (reported by Joe321 on the
forum). With 0110 the install now runs to completion — grub-install
succeeds and the crypttab/initramfs are written — but the umount job
calls `cryptsetup close` on the encrypted swap mapper without first
running `swapoff`, so the still-active swap device is busy
("Device or resource busy") and Calamares reports the whole install as
failed even though the on-disk system is complete and bootable. Added a
guarded `swapoff /dev/mapper/luks-*` to shellprocess (normal + OEM),
which runs immediately before umount. No-op on unencrypted installs
(glob matches nothing) and on encrypted installs without swap (swapoff
on the root mapper errors harmlessly), so only encrypted-swap teardown
is affected.

calamares-settings-linuxlite (8.0-0110-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=high
* Fix encrypted installs ("Encrypt system"): grub-install failed with
"bootloader installation error code 1" and, after working past it, the
system booted only to a BusyBox (initramfs) prompt (reported by
torreydale on the forum). Root cause: the exec sequence in settings.conf
was missing the whole LUKS chain, so /etc/default/grub never got
GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y (grub-install cannot embed crypto modules to
read /boot from inside the LUKS root -> exit 1) and update-initramfs was
never run in the target (the generic squashfs initramfs has no crypttab,
so it cannot unlock root -> BusyBox).
Added to the exec sequence: machineid, luksbootkeyfile,
luksopenswaphookcfg, initramfscfg, initramfs, and grubcfg (before
bootloader). New grubcfg.conf uses overwrite:false so Linux Lite's tuned
/etc/default/grub is preserved; grubcfg auto-injects
GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y only when a LUKS partition is present, so plain
(unencrypted) installs are unaffected.
calamares-settings-linuxlite (8.0-0100-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=high
* Fix install failure on reinstalls over an existing filesystem ("The
installer failed to create partition"). gvfs auto-mounted the freshly
created partition before mkfs could format it. Two defects in
calamares-prelaunch.sh, both fixed:
- prelaunch self-killed: pkill -9 -f gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor ran
inside pkexec sh -c '...', whose argv contained the pattern, so pkill
SIGKILLed its own wrapper before exec'ing calamares. Moved pkill to a
standalone line (run as the live user); the pattern now lives in the
script file, not in any process argv.
- launcher used pkexec: from the desktop icon there is no tty and the
parent exits, so pkexec refused ("Refusing to render service to dead
parents") and Calamares never opened. Switched to sudo (passwordless
in the live session), matching the previous launcher behaviour.
NOTE: the desktop icon's own Exec=sudo calamares (which bypassed this
script entirely) is fixed separately in the build-VM skel master
/home/linux/Desktop/install-linuxlite.desktop ->
Exec=/usr/libexec/linuxlite/calamares-prelaunch.sh

calamares-settings-linuxlite (8.0-0030-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* Drop "internet" from welcome.conf requirements check so Calamares
no longer shows a "no internet connection" banner on launch.
Linux Lite installs are fully offline-capable; the banner was
misleading and worried users testing without a network cable.
* Remove leftover /usr/share/applications/calamares.desktop after
install. Both shellprocess.conf flows (normal + OEM) now do an
explicit `rm -f` of that file. Belt-and-braces over the existing
`apt purge calamares` (which already runs in normal but is
non-fatal and was missing entirely from OEM).
* Fix OEM firstboot autologin choice being silently dropped.
Calamares' lightdm displaymanager only edits an EXISTING
autologin-user= line in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and no-ops if
absent — stock lightdm.conf has no such line, so the end user's
autologin tick was lost. shellprocess-oem-prepare now seeds a
placeholder #autologin-user= line during OEM install for firstboot
Calamares to find and replace.
* Fix oem user not being removed after OEM firstboot completes. The
oem-cleanup.service unit declared both After=multi-user.target and
WantedBy=multi-user.target, an ordering cycle that systemd skips.
Switched to After=network.target Before=display-manager.service,
added RemainAfterExit=yes, and made the unit self-disable cleanly
before deleting itself. apt purge → apt-get purge for script-stable
CLI.
* Drop dead "rm -f /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/99-autologin.conf"
line from the OEM firstboot shellprocess — that path never existed
on the installed system; the relevant file is oem-autologin.conf,
already removed on the line above.
* Fix keyboard layout choice never reaching the installed system.
All three settings.conf files (normal, OEM install, OEM firstboot)
listed `keyboard` in the show: phase but never in exec:, so the
user's selected layout was applied to the live session (Calamares
setxkbmap) but never written to /etc/default/keyboard or
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf on the target. After reboot
the system fell back to the live ISO default (US/QWERTY). Most
visible failure mode: choose French → set password "1" during
install (FR layout interprets the unshifted "1" key as `&`, so
Calamares hashes `&`) → reboot drops back to US layout → "1" key
now produces literal `1` → password mismatch, login fails. Adding
`keyboard` after `localecfg` in each exec sequence fixes this for
every locale, not just French.

* Fix Erase Disk: add partitionLayout block so Erase creates a root
partition (previously only a swap partition was created, causing
rsync code 11 / grub-install failures on install).
* Add requiredStorageGiB=12.0 to partition.conf so the storage
requirement is gated correctly.
* Add welcome.conf with storage/RAM/root requirements; disable the
Linux Lite Support / Known Issues / Release Notes URL buttons (root
has no MIME associations under pkexec, xdg-open fails I/O).
* Increase installer window height (520 -> 640 px).
* Fix timezone not being written to target on first boot. localecfg
only writes locale files, so the user's chosen tz from the Location
step never reached the install. Added the locale viewmodule to the
exec sequence (normal, OEM install, and OEM firstboot) so its
built-in SetTimezoneJob writes /etc/localtime and /etc/timezone
using the user's chosen zone. The OEM firstboot path was previously
silently ignoring the end-user's tz choice, leaving them on whatever
zone the operator picked during initial install.

* Add the NVIDIA 7.3-kernel-support source patch: mainline 7.3 changed
dmem_cgroup_register_region() to take a struct *dmem_cgroup_init instead
of a u64 (commit e11640b9cea4e), so nvidia os-interface.c fails with an
int-to-pointer error on 7.3. Generalise the apply helper to apply every
patch in the patches dir (each -p1, reverse-apply idempotency) so future
per-kernel NVIDIA fixes are just a new file. Verified: nvidia 615.71.09
builds on the 7.3 gaming kernel.

for Ubuntu's nvidia-*-open DKMS tree, plus a dpkg trigger on /usr/src that
applies it and rebuilds the module for LL mainline 7.x+ kernels. Needed
because LL ships a mainline kernel newer than Ubuntu's packaged NVIDIA driver
targets, and the gaming kernel is built mitigations-off + ORC so objtool
accepts NVIDIA's precompiled blobs.

forms: "%d device", "%d device detected", "%(count)d proprietary
driver in use." Also repaired the placeholder Plural-Forms headers
(nplurals=INTEGER) that msginit left in af/ar/fa/hi/zh_CN.
* Brand name "Lite Driver Manager" left untranslated by design.

* UI internationalization (22 locales). Wrapped the GTK3 interface

a postinst that chowns/chmods them.

* Fix legacy-only NVIDIA GPUs being offered the 5xx driver. The Ubuntu
`ubuntu-drivers detect` API on 26.04 claims `nvidia-driver-580` for
Pascal/Maxwell/Kepler/earlier-MX cards even though the 5xx kernel
module refuses to load on those GPUs and breaks X. Confirmed via
Jerry's GTX 1070 laptop — install of 580 left the system without a
desktop.
* LDM now ships NVIDIA's two official support lists at
/usr/share/linuxlite/litedrivermanager/nvidia-{current,legacy}.txt
and classifies each detected NVIDIA GPU against them. A card present
in the legacy list but absent from the current list is flagged as
`legacy_only`.
* For a `legacy_only` GPU: every nvidia-driver-* option in that
device's card is moved out of "recommended" into "alternative" and
rendered with the radio disabled plus a red "Not compatible with
this GPU — requires the 470 legacy driver, which is not in Ubuntu
26.04." note. A banner above the radios re-states the situation in
full and points the user at nouveau as the safe choice. A "Legacy
GPU" pill appears next to the device name.
* The radio for a currently-installed-but-incompatible 5xx remains
visually selected (honest reflection of `dpkg` state) but disabled;
the nouveau radio is selectable so the user can switch away.
* NVIDIA card classifier is module-level (`classify_nvidia_card`) with
a lazy singleton parser — lists are read once on first lookup. Bad
list files / IO errors fail open ('unknown') so LDM falls back to
the upstream-detect behaviour rather than blocking the UI.

* Restyle the "Working hardware" / "Unrecognised hardware" expander
headers as buttons (background, border, hover/active states) so
users discover that the section is clickable to expand/collapse.
The native GtkExpander disclosure arrow is preserved.
* Drivers list scrolled-window now propagates natural height (capped
at 720px) so the window opens taller when the machine has more
devices to show, and stays compact when there's little to display.
default-height lowered from 480 to 400 to match.
* Resize the window to fit the populated drivers page once the rows
have been allocated. propagate-natural-height alone wasn't enough
because the drivers page is empty (placeholder) at initial show —
populating it later doesn't re-trigger a window resize. New
_autosize_window_to_drivers_content() runs once via GLib.idle_add
after box_driver_detail.show_all(); capped at 90% of the monitor
workarea so it never overruns small displays.
* Add a "Copy to clipboard" button at the bottom of the expanded
Working hardware section. Pastes a plain-text dump of every
working-hardware row (class, description, driver, vendor:device)
so testers can drop it straight into a forum post or bug report.
Button briefly shows "Copied" on click for visual confirmation.
* Add a fixed 24x24 leading slot to every radio-button driver option
so synthetic rows ("Do not use the device", "Continue manual",
microcode opt-out) align their text with rows that carry a brand
icon. The slot also gains an 8px left margin so the brand glyph
breathes from the radio circle.
* Make explicit halign=START on every Gtk.Label inside the working /
unrecognised compact rows so xalign + halign agree under HiDPI
scaling and parent allocation, eliminating subtle drift.
* Render the radio-button rim via box-shadow inset (1px #cdd3d9)
instead of a real border, so the indicator stays its default size.
Earlier 1.5px border attempt visibly enlarged the radio. Hover
lifts to white, checked lifts to #2e8ce6.
* Increase the brand-icon left margin from 8px to 16px so vendor
glyphs (broadcom, nvidia, amd, intel) breathe properly from the
radio circle.

* i18n: wrapped and translated (22 locales) the user-facing strings that
had been left hardcoded in English — the hero tagline, the Full Setup
summary, the desktop-kernel chip body, the footer, the "Pick your
stack"/"Tweaks & Optimisations" section headings, the status-strip
words (ready/not installed/loaded/Audio/Kernel/NVIDIA driver), the
no-Internet dialog, the log-tooltip/copy strings, and the System
Gaming Tweaks card's APPLIED/Apply/Reapply labels.
* System Gaming Tweaks no longer force-installs controller drivers.
The "Apply" button now applies only the vendor-neutral system tuning
(sysctls, limits, MangoHud, GameMode, PulseAudio low-latency,
steam-devices udev). Each controller/input driver is its own opt-in
Install button inside the card: Xbox (Bluetooth/USB → xpadneo-dkms),
Xbox Wireless Dongle (xone-dkms + xone-dongle-firmware), PS5 DualSense
(dualsensectl), Gaming Mice (piper). Helper gained matching verbs;
Full Setup and the Recommends: line no longer pull controller drivers.

* Fixed: clicking "Switch back to PulseAudio" on the PipeWire tile
when PipeWire is already active was firing switch-to-pipewire again
(the install verb was captured at construction by a lambda, before
the tile could know it was in the applied state). Added a per-spec
"verb_when_applied" field — primary button now fires the reverse
verb on toggle tiles when already applied. Tile-by-verb registry
also tracks the alt verb so the INSTALLING badge appears in both
directions.
* PipeWire verb's end-of-run log clarified — was "Audio may glitch
briefly while apps reconnect" (which understates it); now tells the
user the cleanest path is log out + log back in (no reboot needed),
and explicitly names the apps likely to need a manual restart.
* Pick-your-stack grid relaid as a single 1×3 row to match the new
tile count (was 2×2 with one empty slot after the ProtonPlus drop).
Same divmod-style attach as the Tweaks row right below it; visually
symmetric now.
* Dropped the "Steam + ProtonPlus" tile (2026-05-15, in-place edit).
ProtonPlus is still useful for power users who want a GUI to pin
multiple Proton versions per game, but on real-world testing the
app proved too buggy and not yet mature enough to be a "click and
walk away" tile alongside Steam + Proton-GE. We don't want a
flagship one-click tile that lands users on something unstable —
that's the opposite of what Lite Game Center is for. The
protonplus deb remains in hematite/main for users who explicitly
want it via `apt install protonplus`; we've just removed the
in-app surfacing. Full Setup no longer installs it. Pick-your-
stack drops from a 2×2 grid to a 1×3 row. Status strip drops the
ProtonPlus pill. Verbs install-steam-protonplus and remove-
steam-protonplus are gone from the helper. Suggests: protonplus
removed from DEBIAN/control. No version bump.
* System Gaming Tweaks: added xone-dongle-firmware to the bundle so
Xbox Wireless Adapter (2.4 GHz dongle) users get the Microsoft-
signed firmware blobs the xone driver needs. The package's postinst
fetches from catalog.s.download.windowsupdate.com at install time
(subject to Microsoft's Terms of Use), SHA-256-verifies every blob,
and is idempotent + network-failure-non-fatal. We surface a multi-
line heads-up in the log BEFORE the install kicks off so the user
understands what's about to happen — same "no surprises" pattern
as the PipeWire-swap tile's "What changes" callout. The package
only matters to Xbox Wireless Adapter dongle owners; BT and
USB-wired Xbox controller users see the heads-up, get the
one-MB-or-so install, and never use the firmware.
* System Gaming Tweaks tile gains a controller + mouse driver
bundle. The xpadneo-dkms install was generalised into a new
`apt_install_optional` helper that pre-checks `apt-cache show`
and prints a one-line "what this covers" note in the log. Now
installs (or skips cleanly if not in the active repo):
- xpadneo-dkms — Xbox One/Series/Elite over Bluetooth
- xone-dkms — Xbox One/Series over USB + 2.4 GHz dongle
- dualsensectl — PS5 DualSense LED, mic, adaptive triggers
- steam-devices — udev rules for non-Steam controller access
- piper — GTK4 GUI for gaming mouse DPI/buttons/RGB
(Logitech G, SteelSeries, ROCCAT etc. via
libratbag)
The tile's "Includes" pill row and tagline are updated to surface
all five so users can see what's in the bundle. Featured Full
Setup's pill row likewise updated.
* Helper: Full Setup's NVIDIA Gaming Tweaks gate is now consistent
with the standalone tile's `requires_check`. Previously the verb
used `lspci | grep NVIDIA Corporation` (just card presence), so
Pascal/Maxwell/Kepler machines running Nouveau/NVK would still
get the __GL_* env-var configs written despite the env vars being
silent no-ops without the proprietary driver. Now gated on
`nvidia-smi --query-gpu=driver_version` succeeding — same check
the GUI tile uses. When proprietary isn't loaded, the verb logs
"(NVIDIA Gaming Tweaks skipped — proprietary NVIDIA driver not
loaded; the __GL_* env vars would be no-ops here.)" and moves on.
* Helper: System Gaming Tweaks tile pre-checks `apt-cache show
xpadneo-dkms` before attempting install, so machines where the
package isn't in repos (resolute's main archive doesn't include
it as of 2026-05-15) skip cleanly with a clear "not in repos on
this release" note instead of generating two lines of "E: Package
'xpadneo-dkms' has no installation candidate" log spam. When
xpadneo-dkms eventually lands in hematite/main, the tile picks
it up automatically with no Game Center change needed.
* Progress dialog: log auto-scroll fixed. GTK4's scroll_to_iter() on
a freshly-inserted line races the TextView's layout — by the time
the call lands the new line's geometry isn't computed, so the
scroll silently no-ops. Replaced with the "ScrolledWindow vadj
changed" pattern: a connect-once handler on the vertical
adjustment's `changed` signal pins the value to upper - page_size
whenever the inner TextView's size grows, which is exactly what
happens on every new insert. Reliable across GTK 4.10 → 4.22+.
Also wired `value-changed` so manual user-scrolls upward (32 px
slack from the bottom) flip sticky-bottom off — you can read older
output without being yanked back, then scroll to the bottom again
to re-engage tail mode.
* Persistent install log at ~/.local/share/lite-gamecenter/install.log.
The footer originally claimed this path existed; it didn't — the
log was only ever in the live ProgressWindow's TextView, which
died with the dialog. Now the helper appends every session to the
file: a "=== ISO-timestamp verb=... user=..." header, followed
by all the helper status lines AND raw apt output (`exec > >(tee
-a "$LOG_FILE")` at the top of the script, after pkexec env
parsing). Log file is created if missing and chowned to the
target user; everything is best-effort so a write-failure on a
weird mount doesn't break installs.
* "Open Log" button added in two places:
1. Main window header bar (between the refresh button and the
brand label) — text-x-generic-symbolic icon with the full
path as tooltip.
2. Progress dialog action row — labelled "Open Log", next to
"Copy to clipboard".
Both call xdg-open on the log path so the user's preferred .txt
handler (Mousepad / gedit / VSCode / etc.) is respected. The path
is pre-created with a friendly placeholder header on first click
so the button works before any install has run.
* Helper: Lutris + Wine-GE verb no longer apt-installs wine-staging
(E: Package 'wine-staging' has no installation candidate on
resolute). The package was dropped from Ubuntu's main archive
during the WoW64 transition and now only lives in the WineHQ
third-party repo. We deliberately do NOT add WineHQ — Wine-GE
(downloaded as a tarball into ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/
a few lines later) is the only Wine that Lutris uses for games
anyway, so the package-level wine-staging was vestigial scaffolding
from a noble-era assumption. winetricks is now also best-effort:
if it's not in the repos on this release, the tile logs a note
and continues. The system 'wine' package is irrelevant to
Lutris-managed prefixes.
* Helper: Full Setup verb now treats Lutris failure as non-fatal
(same as ProtonPlus) — a Wine-GE tarball glitch or transient
GitHub-API hiccup no longer aborts the System Tweaks step that
follows. The user gets "(Lutris skipped — see message above)"
plus all the tweaks they asked for.
* Helper: GE-Proton / Wine-GE tarball extract was failing on
`tar: ...: Cannot open: Permission denied` because mktemp -d
creates a 0700 directory owned by root, and we drop privilege to
$TARGET_USER for the extract — the user couldn't traverse into
the root-owned tmpdir to read the (root-then-chowned) tarball.
Fix: `chmod 755 "$tmpdir"` after mktemp so the as_user step can
reach the tarball. Tarball itself stays root-owned until chowned.
* Progress dialog: forced libadwaita to use FORCE_DARK colour scheme
at app activate so the dialog's HeaderBar title, AlertDialog text
and any other unstyled-by-us widgets don't render dark-on-dark in
sessions where Adwaita defaults to light. All dialog labels +
HeaderBar title + Close button are now explicitly brand-blue
(#5BA8E8) via the .lgc-prog-window CSS scope. Progress bar fill
is now a brand blue→purple gradient matching the Full Setup
featured tile, instead of the default orange.
* Progress dialog: added a "Copy to clipboard" button next to Close
(always enabled, not gated on completion — users can grab partial
output during long installs or apparent hangs for support
threads). Copies the entire log preceded by a 4-line header
showing the dialog's title + subtitle so the receiving forum/bug-
report reader gets context, not just an apt fragment. Button
flashes "Copied ✓" for 1.2s as confirmation.
* Progress dialog: indeterminate pulse replaced with real download
progress driven by apt's APT::Status-Fd structured status stream.
Helper runs `apt-get install -o APT::Status-Fd=3 ...` with fd 3
piped to a process-substitution `sed` that tags each status line
with @@PROG@@; the GUI's append_line() filters those out of the
visible log and routes them to a new _handle_apt_progress() parser
that recognises both dlstatus (overall download %) and pmstatus
(per-package install) lines.
* Title line shows e.g. "Downloading · 47.3% · 12.4 MB/s" during
the download phase. MB/s is synthesised from apt's "Need to get
X MB" line (regex-sniffed off regular stdout) combined with the
dlstatus percent and a monotonic-time download-start anchor —
accurate to within a second or two without needing apt to emit
bytes/sec itself.
* Once the first pmstatus event arrives, bar locks at 100% and the
title narrates "Installing · <pkg>" per package — pmstatus's
per-package percent doesn't map cleanly onto overall progress and
a jumping bar would mislead.
* Progress dialog: log text bumped from #c5cdd6/11px to #e8eef3/12px
for clearly readable contrast on the dark surface, plus 14px
padding for breathing room. Per-line TextTag colour-coding so the
eye picks out structure inside a wall of dpkg output:
blue+bold → helper status ("→" steps, "==" headings)
green+bold → "✓" success ticks
red+bold → ERROR / FAILED / "E:" apt errors
amber → apt's "Get:/Hit:/Ign:/Fetched" download markers
dim grey → apt's "Unpacking / Setting up / Preparing" phase
Auto-scroll switched from scroll_mark_onscreen() (unreliable —
cursor mark wasn't always at end after insert) to scroll_to_iter()
on a freshly-fetched end iter; latest line is always visible.
* Helper: Steam Essentials verb now prints an up-front heads-up
explaining the ~1-minute quiet period during the 350 MB
steam-launcher download from Valve's CDN. apt's download phase
only emits one Get: line for a single large package then nothing
until done — the heads-up sets expectations so users don't think
the install has hung.
* .desktop: GenericName changed from "Gaming setup" to the brand
name "Lite Game Center" — matches the lite-software-sources
convention. Name + GenericName + Comment expanded from 9 locales
to the full LL standard 22-locale set (af/ar/de/es/fa/fi/fr/he/hi/
hr/it/ja/ko/nl/pl/pt/pt_BR/ru/sr/sv/uk/zh_CN). Brand name is
rendered in the local script where idiomatic (e.g. ライトゲームセンター
in ja, 라이트 게임 센터 in ko, 精简游戏中心 in zh_CN) rather than the
less-helpful "leave it as English" treatment we had on the 9-locale
set.
* Status pill strip: replaced libadwaita's .card class (which renders
white in light contexts and washed out the pills against it) with
our own .lgc-status-strip dark surface (#161b22 + #2d3741 border).
Each pill now also carries a soft state-coloured glow (12-14px
box-shadow): green for OK pills, amber for warn pills, dim grey for
missing, soft blue for default. Gives the strip readable contrast
on the dark page and lifts the pills off the surface so they don't
look flat.
* NVIDIA Gaming Tweaks tile now greys out on machines without the
proprietary NVIDIA driver (e.g. a GTX 1070 on resolute running
Nouveau/NVK, where the __GL_* env vars would be silent no-ops).
Status row shows "REQUIREMENT NOT MET", Install button is disabled
with the label "Requires NVIDIA proprietary driver". Detection is
`nvidia-smi --query-gpu=driver_version`-succeeded (i.e. the
proprietary userspace is loaded), not just lspci-sees-NVIDIA.
Architecturally added as a generic `requires_check(state)` hook on
the tile spec so future tiles can express their own preconditions
the same way.
* Initial build. Python 3 + GTK 4 + libadwaita single-window app at
/usr/bin/lite-game-center, branded with lite-gamecenter (menu icon)
and lite_game_center_app_logo.svg (in-app hero).
* One Featured tile ("The Full Setup") + 7 modular tiles split into
two sections:
- Pick your stack (2×2 grid): Steam Essentials, Steam + Proton-GE,
Steam + ProtonPlus, Lutris + Wine-GE.
- Tweaks & Optimisations (3×1 row): NVIDIA Gaming Tweaks, System
Gaming Tweaks, Switch to PipeWire (Audio).
* Live status strip at top — Steam, Vulkan, Proton-GE, ProtonPlus,
Lutris, NVIDIA driver (conditional), Audio server, Running kernel.
* Kernel CTA chip — only renders when uname -r isn't linuxlite-gaming;
links straight into Lite Kernel Manager.
* pkexec helper at /usr/lib/lite-game-center/lite-game-center-helper.
auth_admin_keep so multi-step verbs (Full Setup) prompt once. Verbs
are allowlisted in the dispatcher; no shell-out from helper to
untrusted strings.
* Per-user filesystem work (GE-Proton + Wine-GE tarball extracts into
~/.steam/ and ~/.local/share/lutris/) goes through `runuser -u
$LITE_GAMECENTER_USER` so root never owns user files.
* Every install verb has a paired remove-* verb. Removals are
deliberately conservative (don't strip xpadneo-dkms while a
controller might be using it; keep Vulkan; keep GameMode).
* Ships config drop-ins for sysctl, ulimits, MangoHud preset,
GameMode tuning, PulseAudio low-latency, PipeWire low-latency, and
NVIDIA env vars at /usr/share/lite-game-center/configs/.
* Audio-server swap (PipeWire) is opt-in via its own tile with an
inline "What changes" disclosure listing the 2 s audio gap, the
reversibility path, and the JACK/Bluetooth heads-up.
* No Snap, no Flatpak. ProtonPlus is staged for a forthcoming
hematite/main .deb; the tile will surface a clear error until that
package lands in the repo.

own DKMS postinst hook is suppressed during dpkg -i (it was fatal), the

* Benchmark: add three top GPU tiers above Excellent — Outstanding (>12000),
Exceptional (>28000) and Elite (>40000) — matching the website benchmark
page. Elite (>40000) is aspirational: glmark2 plateaus ~35-45k even on
top-end cards, so it is reserved for genuine next-gen hardware. The HTML
report's GPU bar now scales out of 40000.

* Benchmark: recalibrate GPU rating tiers to the glmark2 composite Score
scale. The score is glmark2's aggregate (hundreds–thousands), not a frame
rate, so the old 60/120/200 thresholds rated nearly every GPU "Excellent".
New tiers: >4000 Excellent, >2000 Good, >800 Fair, else Low — matching the
website benchmark page. Gaming-profile recommendation threshold raised from
120 to 2000, and the HTML report's GPU bar now scales out of 8000.

* postinst now runs `update-pciids` (best-effort, 10s timeout) on every
install/upgrade so /usr/share/misc/pci.ids carries names for the
latest silicon. Without this, fresh CPUs (Strix Halo, Lunar Lake,
Arrow Lake, Panther Lake, etc.) whose PCI IDs post-date the Ubuntu
pciutils snapshot would report as "Device <hex>" on the benchmark
leaderboard. Adds pciutils to Depends (was implicit via essential).

* benchmark GPU detection: prefer lspci's chip name over glxinfo's Mesa
renderer string. On Intel iGPUs lspci has no bracketed marketing name,
so the previous order fell through to glxinfo and reported strings
like "Mesa Intel Graphics (RPL-S)" — informationally weaker than
lspci's "Intel Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics". New order:
nvidia-smi -> lspci bracketed marketing -> lspci basic -> glxinfo.
glxinfo remains the fallback for systems without pciutils.

in addition to "VGA compatible controller" and "3D controller". AMD's
Strix Point iGPUs (Radeon 880M/890M paired with Ryzen AI 9 365 etc.)
enumerate as "Display controller" in lspci, so the previous filter
skipped them and the upload landed on the public leaderboard with
GPU column "Unknown GPU".

* Stop a browser/mail-client switch from dragging Firefox/Thunderbird back in.
lite-patch is Essential and was Recommending firefox-locales /

app — e.g. switching to Brave — let the next Install Updates re-pull the
langpack bundle and, through it, the app itself. The bundles are now Suggests
only. To avoid the opposite regression (apt autoremove sweeping the langpacks
from systems that keep the apps), postinst marks each bundle manual, but only
when it is already installed; systems that removed the app are skipped, so
nothing is re-pulled. Net effect: keepers retain translations, switchers keep
a clean removal, nobody is forced either way.

lite-patch (8.0-0120-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=high
* Fix: Electron / freedesktop StatusNotifierItem tray icons (Ferdium, VS
Code, Discord, Slack, Element, etc.) never appeared in the XFCE panel.
Root cause: the default session runs ayatana-indicator-application as the
SNI watcher (its autostart had OnlyShowIn=...XFCE...), and it does not host
plain freedesktop StatusNotifierItem clients - so Electron tray icons (and
even a raw SNI item) silently failed. The panel already ships the Status
Tray plugin, which IS a full freedesktop+Ayatana+xembed SNI watcher.
Fix: divert /etc/xdg/autostart/ayatana-indicator-application.desktop and
ship an XFCE-disabled version (OnlyShowIn=Unity;MATE;Budgie;), so under
XFCE the Status Tray plugin becomes the sole SNI watcher and renders all
three tray protocols. No effect on Unity/MATE/Budgie. The diversion (via
dpkg-divert in preinst, undone in postrm) keeps the change update-safe
across ayatana-indicator-application upgrades. Validated on a clean LL 8.0
login: ayatana stays down, the Status Tray plugin owns the watcher, and
Electron tray icons render. See ~/LL8-tray-sni-bug-report.md.

* Depends: cryptsetup-initramfs. This is the initramfs boot hook that lets
update-initramfs build a crypto-capable initramfs for encrypted ("Encrypt
system") installs. It is needed permanently on every system: Calamares runs
update-initramfs in the target during install, and every subsequent kernel
update regenerates the initramfs and must re-add the unlock hook. Anchoring
it here (Essential, never autoremoved) guarantees its presence in the
squashfs at build time and on every installed system for life of the
Series. It pulls cryptsetup automatically and is a harmless no-op on
unencrypted systems. Companion to the calamares-settings-linuxlite 0110 fix
that added the LUKS module chain to the installer sequence.

* Recommends firefox-locales and thunderbird-locales. Linux Lite now ships
its 22 supported Firefox/Thunderbird language packs as a single bundle each
(firefox-locales / thunderbird-locales) instead of ~160 individual locale
packages, so a Mozilla release is one locale update rather than one per
language. This Recommends pulls the bundles onto existing systems on the
next update: each user keeps their language (e.g. German now comes from the
bundle), the old per-locale packages go obsolete, and anyone on a language
outside the 22 additionally keeps their own single locale (e.g.
firefox-locale-ast). No user is delivered the other out-of-22 locales.

when running as root (these tools self-elevate via pkexec). A GTK app
running as root on the user's X display registered its own a11y bus in
the shared AT_SPI_BUS root-window property, clobbering the user's bus;

Popular Software. Both install from Microsoft's official apt repository,
which the app now sets up automatically (shared signing key at
/usr/share/keyrings/microsoft.gpg plus a deb822 source — vscode.sources for
code, microsoft-edge.sources for microsoft-edge-stable) before installing,
mirroring the WineHQ handling. Edge previously had no repo setup and could
not install on a stock system. Translated into all 22 locales.
* i18n: translated the category-filter UI strings (category dropdown,
"Installed only", "Close" and their tooltips) that were previously
English-only, closing the last translation gaps in the app (22 locales).
* Install Popular Software: added 43 new applications — including Brave,
Vivaldi, Opera, Discord, Bitwarden, RustDesk, Plex, AnyDesk, Sublime Text,
Google Earth and many archive tools (mkvtoolnix, k3b, Pitivi, LMMS,
QEMU, HPLIP, Mumble, Kate, EasyEffects, Shortwave, etc.). Apps from vendor apt
repositories (Brave/Vivaldi/Opera/Sublime/Google Earth/Plex/AnyDesk) set
up their repository automatically; Discord/Bitwarden/RustDesk/Ferdium are
installed from the vendor's .deb. No Snap or Flatpak packages. All new
descriptions translated into 22 locales.

* Performance: fix laggy typing/UI on non-English locales across all
nine Lite apps in this package (Share Folder password entry was the
visible symptom). They bound the translator as `_ = gettext.gettext`,
the module-level function, which on EVERY call re-runs find() (a
filesystem walk for .mo files) plus a copy.copy() of the translation
object. With the long LANGUAGE fallback chain that non-English
locales get, that is ~55 us/call (worse on slow storage) and runs
in per-keystroke handlers; English (short chain) stayed fast.
Now bound once via gettext.translation(domain, dir, fallback=True)
.gettext — ~0.08 us/call, no per-call filesystem access. Applies to
lite-share-folder, lite-core, lite-about, lite-updates,
lite-update-tray, lite-systemreport, lite-firewallconfig, lite-dpi

* Lite Core: fix a catastrophic bug where removing "Samba" deleted the
entire Lite suite. The lite-software package (which ships Lite Core
itself, Lite Share Folder, Lite Updates, Lite About, etc.) Depends on
samba, so `apt-get purge -y samba` forced apt to remove lite-software
too — taking every Lite admin app with it. The old "Samba Selected"
warning only mentioned losing network shares, so users continued.
Fixes: (1) Samba is no longer offered in the removable list (it is a
hard dependency of the suite and can never be safely purged here);
(2) removed the now-dead Samba warning dialog; (3) added a safety net
— every purge is dry-run simulated first and skipped if it would drag
out a protected package (lite-software / any lite-*/linuxlite* pkg),
so Lite Core can never delete its own suite again.

* Fix UnboundLocalError crash in lite-core and lite-share-folder introduced
by the i18n pass. A throwaway tuple-unpack / for-loop target named `_`
shadowed the gettext `_` alias for the whole enclosing function, so the
`_("...")" calls raised "cannot access local variable '_'". lite-core
crashed when removing software (worker() and _removal_finished());
lite-share-folder crashed when renaming a share (_do_save()). Renamed the
throwaway targets to _unused/_out. No translation/string changes.

* Install All Software: hide internal companion packages from the browser
so they can't be installed directly. New HIDDEN_FROM_BROWSER set —
currently {wine-menu-linuxlite}, which Depends: wine-stable and is only
meant to be pulled in by the Wine setup flow. Ticking it standalone was
snowballing into a full Wine stack (or a broken state). Hidden from both
the install and installed/remove listings.

lite-software (8.0-0160-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* Install All Software "Fix Now" now RECOVERS from any breakage, not just
the apt-fixable kind. Escalating repair: (1) dpkg --configure -a,
(2) apt-get install -f, then (3) if still broken, it identifies the
un-repairable packages (dpkg half-states + apt unmet-dep packages),
and offers to remove them (one confirmation dialog listing them), then
re-runs the repair and re-verifies. Essential / Priority:required
packages are never auto-removed — they're reported for manual fixing.
Fixes the accidental wine-menu-linuxlite case (needs wine-stable, which
isn't installable) that previously left "Fix Now" stuck.
* Repair failures now surface the REAL reason instead of "Unknown error
occurred": _run_apt_phase captures dpkg:/dependency-problem lines, not
just apt "E:" lines (de-duplicated, last 8 shown).

lite-software (8.0-0130-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* lite-software: add "Install All Software" — a full Ubuntu-repository
package browser that replaces Synaptic Package Manager in LL 8.0.
- New third button on the main task selector opens a Synaptic-style
Gtk.ColumnView (Mark | Package | Installed | Version | Description)
listing every installable package (~105k) from the enabled apt
sources.
- Speed: reads libapt-pkg's binary cache via python3-apt — the same
mechanism Synaptic uses — and virtualizes the view so only visible
rows are realized. The full catalogue loads in ~1s and scrolls
instantly.
- Live search matches the package name OR its description. An
optional "Hide libraries / dev / debug" toggle strips lib*, -dev
and -dbg noise down to end-user applications.
- Tick a package to mark it: an un-installed package is marked for
installation, an installed one for removal. "Apply Changes" runs
the removal and installation phases through apt-get with streamed
progress, then returns to the main menu.
- New dependency: python3-apt.
- Renamed the two curated-catalogue buttons to "Install Popular
Software" and "Remove Popular Software" to distinguish them
from the new full-repository "Install All Software" browser.
- Apply now shows a Synaptic-style dependency preview: clicking
Apply resolves the full change set with python-apt (every
pulled-in dependency plus the download size and disk-space
delta) and lists it in the Confirm dialog before committing,
so users aren't surprised by what apt-get installs. The apply
itself still runs through apt-get, which re-resolves the same.
- Internationalized (gettext). All ~189 user-facing strings are
wrapped in _(); translations ship as
/usr/share/locale/<lang>/LC_MESSAGES/lite-software.mo. po/ holds
the lite-software.pot template and per-locale .po files for all
22 Linux Lite languages; build-translations.sh compiles them.
All 22 locales are translated (French hand-checked; the other 21
machine-translated, pending native review) with placeholders and
Pango markup validated. Locale env (LANG/LANGUAGE) is propagated
across the pkexec re-exec so the elevated process shows the
user's language.
- Broken-package handling in Install All Software: on opening, the
view detects an already-broken system (apt broken_count or
`dpkg --audit`) and shows a "Fix Now" banner that runs
`dpkg --configure -a` + `apt-get install -f -y`, then reloads.
The dependency preview now reports a pre-broken system
explicitly instead of blaming the selection, and the remove
phase gained `-f` for symmetry with install.

* lite-updates: fix "Failed to fetch changelog" error when clicking
the changelog icon next to a package in hematite/main. Linux Lite
has no changelogs server, so `apt-get changelog` returns "Failed
to fetch changelog:/<pkg>.changelog Changelog unavailable for
<pkg>=<version>" for every Lite-built package. The button now
reads the bundled /usr/share/doc/<pkg>/changelog.gz (or
.Debian.gz / uncompressed) FIRST, falls back to the root helper's
apt-get changelog for Ubuntu archive packages, and shows a clean
"No changelog available for this package." line instead of
echoing the apt error when neither source produces text.

* lite-update-tray: three robustness improvements and one new
feature.
- Outer try/except in _poll_updates so no callback exception can
kill the daemon (previously a parse error inside the populate
re-render would have taken the tray icon down).
- dpkg.log GFileMonitor now reattaches after logrotate: DELETED,
MOVED_OUT and UNMOUNTED events cancel the old monitor and bind
a new one to the freshly-created file (2-second beat for
logrotate to finish), then re-polls. Without this the icon
silently stopped reacting to Lite Updates / apt completions
after the first weekly log rotation.
- New hover-status tooltip. Wrapping the tray icon now shows
"Linux Lite Updates — N updates available (M security) ·
checked 12 min ago · reboot required" or "Paused until 14:30
Wed 21 May · checked 1 h ago" — refreshed on every state
change (set_title + set_icon_full descs both updated so XFCE
status-notifier-plugin renders it as the panel tooltip).
- set_snooze now delegates tooltip text to _hover_status() so
pausing/resuming produces an accurate one-line summary
instead of a static "Paused" string.

* Dropped Conflicts: gnome-package-updater, package-update-indicator
from the control file. dpkg -i now unpacks cleanly on a stock
resolute base where gnome-package-updater is present, which
matches how RC testers install the deb. The conflicting updaters
are still removed automatically — the postinst's deferred
background sweep now apt-get purges gnome-package-updater and
package-update-indicator (in addition to the existing
gnome-packagekit-common autoremove) ~30s after the parent dpkg
transaction releases its lock.

lite-software (8.0-0080-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* lite-networkshares: removed. lite-share-folder now performs the
same first-run server bootstrap (smbd/nmbd enable + start,
firewalld Samba service, /etc/samba/smb.conf usershare stanza,
smbpasswd account creation) as part of its own pkexec'd setup
helper, so the standalone server-config app is no longer needed.
Workgroup defaults to WORKGROUP (matches Windows out of the
box); netbios name defaults to the hostname set at install.
Users on existing networks that need a custom workgroup can
edit /etc/samba/smb.conf directly. dpkg will remove the
/usr/bin/lite-networkshares binary, its .desktop launcher and
its polkit action on upgrade from 8.0-0060.
* lite-share-folder: new per-folder Samba sharing helper, invoked
from the Thunar right-click menu via a Custom Action. Wraps
`net usershare` so the user is never prompted for root once they
are in the sambashare group. Assumes a fresh Linux Lite where
Samba has never been configured.
- first-run state: detects missing sambashare membership and
asks for a Network Password (the Samba password other
machines use when they connect). "Set Up Sharing" pkexec's
/usr/bin/lite-share-folder-setup which: adds the user to
sambashare, ensures /etc/samba/smb.conf has the usershare
stanza (writes one if smb.conf is missing or doesn't have
usershare lines yet), enables and starts smbd/nmbd, opens
Samba in firewalld, sets the Samba password via smbpasswd
(-a if new, -s if changing).
- post-setup state: shows "log out and back in" because the
running process's kernel-level group list doesn't pick up
sambashare until the next login session.
- new-share form: share name (auto-suggested from folder name,
invalid chars stripped on the fly), optional comment, "Allow
writing" and "Guest access" switches. Defaults: read-only,
no guest.
- edit-existing form: same fields pre-filled from
`net usershare info`, plus a red "Stop Sharing" action and
a "Change…" button to reset the network password later.
- denylist: refuses to share /etc, /root, /boot, /usr, /var,
and home-relative credential stores (~/.ssh, ~/.gnupg,
~/.config, ~/.mozilla, ~/.thunderbird, ~/.aws, ...).
Includes polkit action com.linuxliteos.lite-share-folder
(auth_admin_keep, LL-branded vendor + folder-publicshare icon)
and a .desktop launcher with NoDisplay=true used for icon
resolution from Thunar. No new deps (samba, samba-common-bin,
cifs-utils, firewalld already in Depends from earlier versions).
Thunar UCA entry is added manually via Edit → Configure custom
actions; no system-wide uca.xml is shipped.

* lite-update-tray: replace the single "Check for Updates Now" menu
item with a "Configure..." option (same on left and right click).
Adds a Configure window with:
- status card showing update count, security-only split, last
checked time and apt cache age
- reboot-required banner driven by /var/run/reboot-required
- expandable list of pending packages (name + new version, with
a "security" tag for -security suite entries)
- live 1 Hz Down/Up area chart for the default-route interface,
Down/Up rate + session totals; timer only runs while the
Configure window is visible
- configurable polling interval (hours + minutes in 15-min
steps, 15 min minimum)
- "Notify me when new updates appear" toggle (notify-send when
the count transitions upward)
- "Pause checks" footer: 1 hour / 4 hours / Until tomorrow
morning / Resume; persisted across restarts
Per-user config at ~/.config/lite-update-tray/config.json. No new
deps (libnotify-bin was already in Depends for notify-send).

* lite-core: add Samba to the removable applications list. When Samba
is selected for removal, show a warning dialog noting that Lite
Network Shares will not work unless Samba is reinstalled later.
* lite-firewallconfig: migrate both dialogs from the deprecated
Adw.MessageDialog to Adw.AlertDialog. The status dialog moves the
coloured ENABLED/DISABLED label into the body via Pango markup
instead of set_extra_child (per memory feedback_adw_alertdialog.md
AlertDialog + set_extra_child is unreliable). show_message is a
straight rename. Same UX, no DeprecationWarnings.

* Clickable links: a plain left-click now opens URLs (http/https/ftp/www) and
OSC-8 hyperlinks in the default browser — no Ctrl needed — matching the
pointer cursor already shown on hover. Click-and-drag over a link still
selects text instead of opening it. Also fixed the URL matcher compiling

on history recall (Up/Down). Incomplete syntax just runs and errors, as in

* Full UI internationalization. Every user-facing string in the GTK4
interface is now wrapped in gettext _() and translated into all 22
Linux Lite locales (af ar de es fa fi fr he hi hr it ja ko nl pl pt
pt_BR ru sr sv uk zh_CN): window/dialog titles, the Cleaning /
Performance / System / Information / Preferences groups and every
tweak's name + description, the One Click Clean confirmation, all
toasts, the hostname/numlock/save-session/kiosk/large-files dialogs,
the service manager (Preload/zRAM/TLP) and disk-usage windows.
* Plain-gettext setup (TEXTDOMAIN=lite-tweaks): the GUI always runs as
the invoking user, so no LANG env-file propagation is needed — the
only escalation is `pkexec lite-tweaks --root-action`, a separate
non-GUI process whose transient stage output remains English.
* Logic/sentinel values kept English for runtime comparison (task,
category, grade); grade is translated only at the display label
("Safe"/"Caution"). Brand name "Lite Tweaks" and technical tokens
(zRAM, TLP, APT, Mesa, /var/log, paths) left untranslated.
* postinst now chowns/chmods the shipped lite-tweaks.mo catalogs.

* Fix Package Cache tweak hidden when /var/cache/apt/archives/ has
content but /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/ is unreadable by the
desktop user (mode 700 _apt:root). `du -sb` exits 1 with a
"Permission denied" stderr on the partial/ subdir but still prints
the correct readable total on stdout. The old code threw away the
stdout because returncode != 0, so apt_size came back 0 and the
`if apt_size > 0` gate hid the tweak entirely. Fixed in both
get_dir_size() and get_dir_size_bytes() — parse stdout if it has
a value, drop stderr, exit code is now advisory only.
Reported with a real 404 MB cache showing zero in the UI.

* One Click Clean confirmation dialog now itemises each task with
its reclaim size, not just the task name. The headline still
quotes the combined total; the bulleted list under it now reads
"• Package Cache — 84MB", "• Thumbnail Cache — 12MB" etc. Tasks
without an up-front byte count (Autoremove Packages, Remove
Residual Configs) appear without a size suffix rather than a
misleading "0 B". Implementation batches one numfmt call across
every eligible item so we don't fork once per bullet.

* Bootstrap robustness: fix "Install Ollama" failing on machines that are
actually online. The internet pre-check now probes HTTPS (the protocol the
download uses) instead of TCP port 53 to a public DNS resolver — networks
that block/redirect outbound 53 were giving false "No Internet Connection"
errors. The ollama.com tarball HEAD probe timeout is raised 5s->15s and the
helper's first-boot API wait 15s->30s for slow links and cold starts. The
install endpoint now short-circuits when Ollama is already installed and
responding, so the network pre-checks can't block an already-good machine.

* i18n: translate the setup-screen model catalogue, which was still
English in non-English UIs. The hardware tier badge/description, the
per-model card descriptions, the status badges (Available / Recommended
/ Installed / "Needs N GB+ RAM"), the size/params/min RAM/min VRAM
labels, and the download/delete tooltips are now wrapped in t() in
index.html renderModels()/renderHardware(), so they translate ×22.
Added 704 dict entries to i18n.js (32 strings/locale) covering the 12
model descriptions + 9 tier labels/descriptions from
hardware-profiles.json + the badge/label/tooltip literals. Model names,
sizes and units (GB/VRAM/MoE/1B...) stay English inside translations.

myai (8.0-0100-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* i18n: the /llmmodels.html "Catalogue" page (the open-source LLM landing
page reached from the chat composer link) is now fully translated into all
22 LL locales. Inline <strong>/<a>/<code> tags in the body prose were
flattened so each sentence is a single text node, letting i18n.js's
text-node translateDOM swap whole grammatical sentences rather than broken
fragments. Model names, sizes, commands (ollama pull <model>) and company
names stay English within translated sentences.
* i18n.js gains ~87 translated catalogue strings per locale (1900+ entries).
* server.py adds a /llmmodels.html route that injects <html lang="xx"> from
the UI language so the page localises and untranslated strings fall back to
English safely.
* Composer link points at /llmmodels.html (the new localising route).
myai (8.0-0090-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* "Reply in my language" toggle (off by default, persisted): when on and the
UI isn't English, a system message ("Always respond in <Language>.") is
prepended to the chat request so the model answers in the UI language even
for terse prompts. Hidden when the UI is English. The model otherwise
mirrors whatever language the user types in.
* i18n: wrapped ~15 dynamic strings in index.html that were rendering English
(the "Model" switcher label, Authenticating…/Done./Get started/Starting…,
and the placeholder ones: Downloading/Deleted/Download/installed/ready/
"Start chatting with"/"Installs Ollama…"/one-time-download, plus the
first-token/throughput metric labels). translateDOM only runs once at load,
so these dynamic assignments now call t() explicitly.
* Server error toasts now route through t(): the static server.py error
strings (pkexec missing, auth cancelled, no-Internet for install/download,
ollama.com unreachable) are added to the dictionary and shown translated.
* All new strings translated into the 22 LL locales (+414 entries).
* NOTE: the separate /static/llmmodels.html "Catalogue" page is still English;
its full translation lands in the next revision.

* Fix: the web UI rendered in English regardless of the system locale.
The launcher (/usr/bin/myai) exports LANG=C.UTF-8 / LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 so
hardware/ollama subprocess output parses predictably, but that also
made server.py's _ui_lang() resolve "C" and inject <html lang="en">
every time — so static/i18n.js always fell back to English.
* Launcher now captures the session language into MYAI_UI_LANGUAGE /
MYAI_UI_LOCALE BEFORE forcing C, and _ui_lang() prefers those (and
skips C/POSIX). The page now follows the OS language like the rest of
the Lite suite. No translation-catalogue changes were needed — the
22-locale i18n.js dictionary was already complete and correct
(fr "Conversations"/"Catalogue" are intentionally absent because the
French is identical to the English source).

* Web UI internationalization (22 locales). Added static/i18n.js: a
window.I18N dictionary keyed by the English source string plus t()
and a safe translateDOM() that localises the static onboarding/chrome
and is a no-op for anything unknown. index.html references it in the
head and wraps its dynamic JS literals with t(). server.py injects
<html lang="xx"> from the system locale so the page renders in the
OS language. llmmodels.html left English (JS-built technical model
catalogue).

* Add an Internet connection check before the two operations that
reach the public Internet: pulling a model (/api/models/pull) and

each now returns a clear "No Internet Connection" message in the
UI instead of a long timeout or a cryptic download error.

* Setup screen: added a transparent orange opt-in banner that reads
"You're in control. MyAI doesn't store any data or run any AI
services on this computer until you choose to start using it."
AI is a polarising topic and Linux Lite respects user choice — the
banner makes the dormant-until-used behaviour explicit before any
runtime is installed or model downloaded. Banner dismisses on
click of Get started (also persisted via localStorage flag
`myai-consent-dismissed`) and never reappears for users with an
Ollama runtime already installed.

myai (8.0-0020-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=medium
* Direct binary install — drops Ollama's install.sh entirely. The
backend now downloads `ollama-linux-{amd64,arm64}.{tgz,tar.zst}`
itself with real byte-level progress, then the pkexec helper
extracts it into /usr and configures the systemd unit. install.sh's
`apt`-based CUDA/NVIDIA-driver install path is no longer invoked;
on a GTX 1070 LL test laptop with nouveau active, install.sh's
driver install was clobbering X on reboot. Ollama detects
libnvidia-ml at runtime so users who installed proper drivers via
Lite Driver Manager still get GPU acceleration.
* Added zstd + tar to Depends for the new extraction path.
* Helper restricts accepted tarball paths to /tmp/myai-ollama-download.*
so a compromised caller cannot ask it to untar an arbitrary archive
into /usr.
* `prerm` now only stops+disables myai-ollama.service on actual
`remove`/`purge`/`deconfigure`, not on `upgrade`. Previously every
`dpkg -i myai_*.deb` would leave Ollama stopped and the model
picker would show "Available" for already-installed models until
the user manually started it again.
* `postinst` now starts myai-ollama.service when it's enabled but
stopped — recovers any half-state from prior packages that hit the
above bug.
* New Chat (+ New) button now jumps to the chat screen, useful when
invoked from the Settings/model-picker view.
* Settings/picker: deletable models — trash button next to the green
Installed badge. POST /api/models/delete with confirmation showing
the freed disk space. Falls back to setup screen if the currently
active model is the one being deleted.
* Sidebar: deletable conversations — trash icon visible on hover.
DELETE /api/conversations/<id>. Falls back to a new empty
conversation if the active conv is the one being deleted.
* Topbar: brand text changed to "MyAI | Linux Lite"; title bar
matches. Quick-switch row of installed-model pills at top of chat
(hidden when only one model is installed).
* Topbar: A−/A+ zoom controls (70% ↔ 160%, 10% steps, persisted in
localStorage as `myai.zoom`). Chat button added to top-right.
All icon buttons now have tooltips.
* Hardware tier expansion to 9 tiers (added tier_gpu_xhigh 24-48GB,
tier_gpu_xtreme 48GB+, tier_cpu_xhigh 32GB+ RAM no GPU). VRAM is
now SUMMED across accelerated GPUs (NVIDIA always, AMD only if
ROCm-eligible), not max'd. Model list expanded from 5 to 10 —
added Gemma 2 27B, Mixtral 8x7B, Llama 3.3 70B, Qwen 2.5 72B,
Mixtral 8x22B.

Linux Lite rewrite of mintstick, consolidated and rebranded as
"USB Writer Formatter".
Application:
* Consolidated the separate image writer and formatter into a single GTK4
application with a Write Image / Format mode switch.
* Rewritten in plain GTK4 (no libadwaita) to follow the Linux Lite
Light/Dark theming like the rest of the Lite suite.
* Write: determinate progress bar with live transfer speed (MB/s, GB/s)
and ETA; no pulsating bar. The backend writes in 1 MiB blocks with
periodic fsync so the reported speed is honest.
* Format: determinate progress with stage labels (removing partition
table, creating partition, clearing signatures, creating file system);
the log window has been removed.
* Full interface translations (22 locales).
* Full-colour Papirus device icons throughout (no symbolic icons): USB
stick for the app and device, optical disc for Write, green tick for a
successful result.
Verify:
* Verifies Linux Lite ISOs by matching the official .sha256 fetched over
HTTPS (Linux Lite does not publish GPG-signed sums); shows the Linux
Lite logo on success. Ubuntu/Debian GPG verification is retained.
* Fixed checksum parsing to accept the coreutils two-space sums format.
* Ported from GTK3 to GTK4 to match the main application; removed the
gtk-3.0 dependency.
Packaging:
* Seamless update over mintstick (Conflicts/Replaces/Provides: mintstick).
* Single menu entry; Name, GenericName and Comment translated (22 locales).
* Branded the PolicyKit policies for Linux Lite.
* Removed Nemo and KDE integration files (Linux Lite uses Thunar); Thunar
right-click actions ("Write to USB", "Format USB") are provided via
lite-patch.
* Removed all Linux Mint branding icons.
* Credited the original mintstick developer.

For full Kernel details, please visit these 2 web pages explaining all the features.
https://www.linuxliteos.com/linux-lite-kernel.html
and:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/linux-lite-kernel-comparison.html
Benchmarking
Lite Kernel Manager also features a benchmarking tool where people can upload their scores. This should present a unique opportunity for people to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their Kernel tuned systems.

Having problems upgrading?
First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.
Code:
apt policy lite-upgrade-series8should return:
Code:
Installed: 8.0-0050-linuxlite
Candidate: 8.0-0050-linuxliteKernel upgrades are not included in Lite Upgrade. Enabling this globally could cause a significant number of computers to run into issues. "If it ain't broke..."
If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Software Sources.
