With 0110 the install now runs to completion — grub-install succeeds and the crypttab/initramfs are written — but the umount job calls `cryptsetup close` on the encrypted swap mapper without first running `swapoff`, so the still-active swap device is busy ("Device or resource busy") and Calamares reports the whole install as failed even though the on-disk system is complete and bootable. Added a guarded `swapoff /dev/mapper/luks-*` to shellprocess (normal + OEM), which runs immediately before umount. No-op on unencrypted installs (glob matches nothing) and on encrypted installs without swap (swapoff on the root mapper errors harmlessly), so only encrypted-swap teardown is affected. -- Jerry Bezencon <[email protected]> Fri, 17 Jul 2026 17:12:44 +1200 calamares-settings-linuxlite (8.0-0110-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=high * Fix encrypted installs ("Encrypt system"): grub-install failed with "bootloader installation error code 1" and, after working past it, the system booted only to a BusyBox (initramfs) prompt (reported by torreydale on the forum). Root cause: the exec sequence in settings.conf was missing the whole LUKS chain, so /etc/default/grub never got GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y (grub-install cannot embed crypto modules to read /boot from inside the LUKS root -> exit 1) and update-initramfs was never run in the target (the generic squashfs initramfs has no crypttab, so it cannot unlock root -> BusyBox). Added to the exec sequence: machineid, luksbootkeyfile, luksopenswaphookcfg, initramfscfg, initramfs, and grubcfg (before bootloader). New grubcfg.conf uses overwrite:false so Linux Lite's tuned /etc/default/grub is preserved; grubcfg auto-injects GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y only when a LUKS partition is present, so plain (unencrypted) installs are unaffected. calamares-settings-linuxlite (8.0-0100-linuxlite) hematite; urgency=high * Fix install failure on reinstalls over an existing filesystem ("The installer failed to create partition"). gvfs auto-mounted the freshly created partition before mkfs could format it. Two defects in calamares-prelaunch.sh, both fixed: - prelaunch self-killed: pkill -9 -f gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor ran inside pkexec sh -c '...', whose argv contained the pattern, so pkill SIGKILLed its own wrapper before exec'ing calamares. Moved pkill to a standalone line (run as the live user); the pattern now lives in the script file, not in any process argv. - launcher used pkexec: from the desktop icon there is no tty and the parent exits, so pkexec refused ("Refusing to render service to dead parents") and Calamares never opened. Switched to sudo (passwordless in the live session), matching the previous launcher behaviour. Linux Lite installs are fully offline-capable; the banner was misleading and worried users testing without a network cable. * Remove leftover /usr/share/applications/calamares.desktop after install. Both shellprocess.conf flows (normal + OEM) now do an explicit `rm -f` of that file. Belt-and-braces over the existing `apt purge calamares` (which already runs in normal but is non-fatal and was missing entirely from OEM). * Fix OEM firstboot autologin choice being silently dropped. Calamares' lightdm displaymanager only edits an EXISTING autologin-user= line in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and no-ops if absent — stock lightdm.conf has no such line, so the end user's autologin tick was lost. shellprocess-oem-prepare now seeds a placeholder #autologin-user= line during OEM install for firstboot Calamares to find and replace. * Fix oem user not being removed after OEM firstboot completes. The oem-cleanup.service unit declared both After=multi-user.target and WantedBy=multi-user.target, an ordering cycle that systemd skips. Switched to After=network.target Before=display-manager.service, added RemainAfterExit=yes, and made the unit self-disable cleanly before deleting itself. apt purge → apt-get purge for script-stable CLI. * Drop dead "rm -f /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/99-autologin.conf" line from the OEM firstboot shellprocess — that path never existed on the installed system; the relevant file is oem-autologin.conf, already removed on the line above. * Fix keyboard layout choice never reaching the installed system. All three settings.conf files (normal, OEM install, OEM firstboot) listed `keyboard` in the show: phase but never in exec:, so the user's selected layout was applied to the live session (Calamares setxkbmap) but never written to /etc/default/keyboard or /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf on the target. After reboot the system fell back to the live ISO default (US/QWERTY). Most visible failure mode: choose French → set password "1" during install (FR layout interprets the unshifted "1" key as `&`, so Calamares hashes `&`) → reboot drops back to US layout → "1" key now produces literal `1` → password mismatch, login fails. Confirmed via Jerry's GTX 1070 laptop — install of 580 left the system without a desktop. * LDM now ships NVIDIA's two official support lists at /usr/share/linuxlite/litedrivermanager/nvidia-{current,legacy}.txt and classifies each detected NVIDIA GPU against them. A "Legacy GPU" pill appears next to the device name. * The radio for a currently-installed-but-incompatible 5xx remains visually selected (honest reflection of `dpkg` state) but disabled; the nouveau radio is selectable so the user can switch away. * NVIDIA card classifier is module-level (`classify_nvidia_card`) with a lazy singleton parser — lists are read once on first lookup. The native GtkExpander disclosure arrow is preserved. * Drivers list scrolled-window now propagates natural height (capped at 720px) so the window opens taller when the machine has more devices to show, and stays compact when there's little to display. default-height lowered from 480 to 400 to match. * Resize the window to fit the populated drivers page once the rows have been allocated. propagate-natural-height alone wasn't enough because the drivers page is empty (placeholder) at initial show — populating it later doesn't re-trigger a window resize. Pastes a plain-text dump of every working-hardware row (class, description, driver, vendor:device) so testers can drop it straight into a forum post or bug report. Button briefly shows "Copied" on click for visual confirmation. * Add a fixed 24x24 leading slot to every radio-button driver option so synthetic rows ("Do not use the device", "Continue manual", microcode opt-out) align their text with rows that carry a brand icon. The slot also gains an 8px left margin so the brand glyph breathes from the radio circle. * Make explicit halign=START on every Gtk.Label inside the working / unrecognised compact rows so xalign + halign agree under HiDPI scaling and parent allocation, eliminating subtle drift. * Render the radio-button rim via box-shadow inset (1px #cdd3d9) instead of a real border, so the indicator stays its default size. Earlier 1.5px border attempt visibly enlarged the radio. Previously the verb used `lspci | grep NVIDIA Corporation` (just card presence), so Pascal/Maxwell/Kepler machines running Nouveau/NVK would still get the __GL_* env-var configs written despite the env vars being silent no-ops without the proprietary driver. Replaced with the "ScrolledWindow vadj changed" pattern: a connect-once handler on the vertical adjustment's `changed` signal pins the value to upper - page_size whenever the inner TextView's size grows, which is exactly what happens on every new insert. Reliable across GTK 4.10 → 4.22+. Also wired `value-changed` so manual user-scrolls upward (32 px slack from the bottom) flip sticky-bottom off — you can read older output without being yanked back, then scroll to the bottom again to re-engage tail mode. * Persistent install log at ~/.local/share/lite-gamecenter/install.log. The footer originally claimed this path existed; it didn't — the log was only ever in the live ProgressWindow's TextView, which died with the dialog. Now the helper appends every session to the file: a "=== ISO-timestamp verb=... user=..." header, followed by all the helper status lines AND raw apt output (`exec > >(tee -a "$LOG_FILE")` at the top of the script, after pkexec env parsing). Log file is created if missing and chowned to the target user; everything is best-effort so a write-failure on a weird mount doesn't break installs. * "Open Log" button added in two places: 1. Main window header bar (between the refresh button and the brand label) — text-x-generic-symbolic icon with the full path as tooltip. 2. The path is pre-created with a friendly placeholder header on first click so the button works before any install has run. * Helper: Lutris + Wine-GE verb no longer apt-installs wine-staging (E: Package 'wine-staging' has no installation candidate on resolute). The package was dropped from Ubuntu's main archive during the WoW64 transition and now only lives in the WineHQ third-party repo. We deliberately do NOT add WineHQ — Wine-GE (downloaded as a tarball into ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/ a few lines later) is the only Wine that Lutris uses for games anyway, so the package-level wine-staging was vestigial scaffolding from a noble-era assumption. winetricks is now also best-effort: if it's not in the repos on this release, the tile logs a note and continues. LINUX LITE HIGH PERFORMANCE CUSTOM KERNELS
----------------
Linux Lite ships with a custom kernel built specifically for desktop and gaming use on everyday hardware. It is based on the latest Ubuntu kernel source and incorporates a curated set of patches from the community, alongside targeted configuration improvements.

The Two Kernels

linuxlite — default desktop kernel

This is what every Linux Lite installation boots into. It prioritises a smooth, responsive desktop experience for everyday tasks: web browsing, office work, media playback, and general use.

linuxlite-gaming — optional gaming kernel

This kernel goes further in reducing input lag and improving frame delivery. It is best suited to users who play games regularly or run audio/video production software where timing matters. It can be installed at any time after setup without removing the default kernel.

Both kernels take advantage of the EEVDF scheduler. On top of this, both kernels include the full BORE scheduler modification (Burst-Oriented Response Enhancer).
BORE tracks each task’s burst time — how long it runs in short, intense bursts — and uses this to bias scheduling decisions. Tasks that have been waiting and then run in short bursts (like a desktop application repainting its window or a game processing a frame) receive a priority boost, keeping interactive work feeling snappy even under heavy background load. BORE is controlled by a dedicated CONFIG_SCHED_BORE kernel option and exposes several sysctl tunables under kernel.sched_bore for fine-tuning.

The two kernels differ in how aggressively they allow the scheduler to interrupt running work:

- linuxlite uses dynamic preemption, which balances throughput and responsiveness. It can switch between modes at runtime.
- linuxlite-gaming uses full preemption, which allows the kernel to interrupt almost any running task immediately. This reduces the worst-case delay before a game or audio application gets CPU time.

These kernels also ship with a new application - Lite Kernel Manager which has all of the features shown below:
