Linux Lite 8.0 custom kernel manager

With previous versions of LL, updates to kernel are familiar events requiring reboots.
On a potato Linux Lite 8 system (which has been updated as suggested by the Linux Lite Update tray app), noted that no update/upgrade had suggested a reboot.

Opened Lite Kernel Manager which indicated 7.1.0 was available.

Is this the correct mechanism for a user to keep track of kernel updates or have I missed an indicator somewhere ?

In Lite Kernel Manager, clicked the 'Install From Repository', this downloaded the update and started an install process which failed.

Had a quick look through the links to the Lite custom kernel but couldn't find anything on this or release notes about 7.1.0.  I realise this is new ground. Let me know if any further information is required.
