Buggy applications links
#1

Jerry, I noticed that libreoffice shortcuts in Whisker menu point to /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/ instead of ~/.local/share/applications/

Can we correct that at some point?

I also see the same for simple-scan... it is using skel folder instead user's ./local/share/applications. There might be others, will better gather them and list them here:

libreoffice-*
simple-scan

Edited:

Actually it is the case for almost every application in Linux Lite. They are copied over to the user profile but somehow pointing to those .desktop files was overlooked. Meaning that it doesn't matter if the application is completely removed, the shortcut will always show under Whisker menu. This Whisker menu mess is all over, I better leave it alone until we decide to come hard at it and upgrade it or something. It is not worth putting a band-aid on it, we need to fix it from its root.

It's not something I'm going to get into a panic about Ralphy. This is a topic we've discussed before and I said then it will be a different story in Series 4.x
I'd rather we focused on more important things in this Series. Cheers.

We don't need to panic about this, Jerry. I understand what you're saying to some extend but why we aren't fixing these things is what I really don't grasp. I'm looking at the code and there isn't anything preventing us from fixing these things. Allow me to explain...

These are bugs that have never been addressed. From what you are saying LL users will have to wait another 4 releases for us to basically move to another Menu and the current one will not be addressed. The question remains:

Where is our improvement for current series then?
LL is solid and we have certainly improved our apps, no doubt. But what are those "important things" we should spend more time on in current series? - we have improved almost every tweak, the upgrader, createsysreport, we have added new tweaks that work, etc. I do have real concerns for improving what we already have in place instead of building on top of things that are broken and left unattended.

Last time we talked about the menu I didn't look at the code. Today, when looking at it, I see things that can be improved to address these issues (for the most part) without having to write hundreds of lines of code.  Then again, why aren't we doing something about it in 3.x series?; that's all I wanna know partner.

As a developer, you're probably looking at this thinking, '"why the hell isn't he fixing this, or taking it seriously!" Trust me, I understand.
Where is our improvement for current series then? There are numerous, should you even need to ask that question.

Look, I really appreciate your attention to detail. I don't rate this as a high priority, if you do, then we obviously will disagree on this. No collaboration is perfect and shares 100% the same views. What I want us to do is focus on innovation and improvement in this Series. What I laid out in my https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/devel...he-future/ states this clearly.

We are where we are in the linux world with fantastic feedback because of the community we have and my vision and direction.

Some issues you bring up will be addressed now, some won't.
I need to to trust that there is a never ending focus on my behalf in sticking to the plan and executing it.

I'm under the impression that you've taken this personal. As a contributor, I look for ways to improve what we have in place without stepping over your vision, Jerry. Every little improvement I've contributed has followed everything you have requested and it has been kept within bash too. I have never even insisted on including python, JavaScript or any other language for reasons you've stated before; that's how much I keep your vision and direction in mind. If me asking a legit question just to know what's in your thoughts is going to lead us to you scrubbing in my face your leadership, vision and direction then please just don't answer my question and ignore me; I wouldn't mind, honestly. I asked away because a "vision" alone does not generate a single line of code and when I'm looking at broken things I want to help fix them not for a personal whim but for our users. You and I can get these things fixed in a blink of an eye for personal use; most users can't.

See, wear my shoes for a minute... Ralphy is a developer - a free contributor actually. As such, even a moderator in the forum has more power to do things than what Ralphy as a coder has; yet Ralphy doesn't care. All the time, code and hours I've put down into helping others and contributing with LL could go downhill at any time if something ever happens to you because I don't even know how you've planned for such scenarios; yet Ralphy doesn't care and keeps pushing forward. Ralphy adds a single application to lite-software (shotwell) after sharing his thoughts with you and that's unacceptable because you hadn't completely considerate it when he did. Ralphy didn't bother to even answer that thread because it will bring discussions that doesn't add any value to our goals - end users; just waited for you to decide whether to add it or not. I've been here six months already and you've seen me share my work without putting personal preferences in front of it. What made you use that passive-aggressive tone is something only you can answer but my question was not a challenge to your leadership in any way.

Here is the reason why I asked in the first place; Whisker Menu Restore Tweak - A simple tweaks that gives users the ability to restore the whisker menu with additional options to keep their Favorites or Recently Used items or both. And in case you believe I've not read your plan posted at https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/devel...he-future/ you can see in that video I'm using YAD and not zenity because I've been following your vision and direction all along. I deserve better than those words from you, Jerry... I really do. Heck, now I wish I hadn't asked.

I don't take this personal. Taking things personally leads to the end of collaborations. I keep emotion out of this. My thoughts and actions are for the users. Think Spock, not 100% logical due to his human half, but well meaning ;)

We're not always going to land on the same page, and I have always shown my gratitude to you in more ways than one.
Of course I encourage you to innovate and make suggestions, just be aware it may not happen and I'm not going to be made to feel like I have to explain why. The only people I'm answerable to are our users. This isn't a power or ego thing, you just have to trust me.

Let's move on to the next big thing and leave this behind us.

I'll throw up a post soon to clarify what I want us to work on.
