Lite Updates Notify Development Thread
#1

[member=2]Jerry[/member],

I'm not sure that /usr/local/sbin/updatesnotify is the cause of the issue... and test -e ["/var/lib/dpkg/lock"] || rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/lock may not be the solution after all. This should be used as last resort. If we use this carelessly we can end up with a broken system. I'm under the impression that this is a Ubuntu based related issue. Maybe we should not do test -e ["/var/lib/dpkg/lock"] || rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/lock after all... it is considered dangerous. The lock is placed when an apt process is running, and it is removed when the process completes. If there is a lock with no apparent process running, this may mean the process got stuck for some reason. Logout and login or reboot is a better way to handle it. And ultimately, finding which process is the root of he issue is the best solution.

What it's causing it I don't know, but I'm pretty sure it is not updatesnotify (see below). I have both lock in my system:

/var/cache/apt/archives/lock
/var/lib/dpkg/lock

... and I cannot reproduce the issue even if I attempt to run updates as soon as the notification pops up.

I'm under the impression (and I'm talking out of my elbow here) that the issue was likely a hanged apt process in the system where that happened.  I've ran updatesnotify with synaptic open and even that does not cause the lock issue.

My 2 cents :)

Your video evidence supports your point. I'll revert this. Cheers Ralphy. I've included this in Lite Software and Lite Upgrade, do you consider this a risk there too? Is error handling better looked at through log files?

P.S. when I load these threads on Firefox, the audio in your videos starts playing automatically, the video does not start playing until I play it manually. Do you get that in FF too?

In my opinion it is risky anywhere where we have it. See partner, if we do not collect the error log it is hard to go ahead with a fix. We need to find out when and how the issue is taking place to better come up with a better fix. Also, like we said before, when this file is locked is because there was an apt process hanged somewhere. Removing the lock does not correct the root of the problem. We are better off finding which process is hanging and the reason behind it. Running latest code in my machine (3.4) with all our commits I'm yet to come across this issue myself. It could even be a package the user installed on his own system not related to LL what's caused the issue and we are trying to "fix" something we cannot replicate ourselves (or at least I can't find a way to replicate and I have quite a few things installed in my system.

If there is a process hanging in Lite Software and Lite Upgrade we need to find out why rather than just deleting the file too. I did not find a way to reproduce it in Lite software. I have not tested in liteupgrade though cos' you're working on it and I'm waiting for you to tell me when it is a good time to take liteupgrade for a spin again.

I do not use Firefox, so I hadn't noticed myself. Yes, it happens for me also.  :o

In your next video, perhaps try a different format, see if that makes a difference. Thanks for expressing your concerns in this thread.

It seems to be related to the way Firefox handles HTML5 videos embeed and the limited support for mp4's. That's really odd though as it doesn't happen in Chrome or Vivaldi (which is the main browsers I use).

Please keep an eye on https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/insta.../#msg30620

It seems that my suspicions were right. There are some users (specifically those far away from linuxlite main repo) that have experienced connectivity issues and that's what I believe have caused the issues with Lite Updates and not anything within the code.

That also explains why I cannot replicate it EVER - because I use the Anycast mirror http://mirror.unlockforus.com/linuxlite/ and not the master server.

Do you think for now we should include a check for the word 'xenial' and replace it with 'citrine' in those files?

That file is not supposed to have xenial in it but citrine. I'm not sure how that user found xenial in it... also note that he mentioned the wrong path (or at least a path that doesn't exist in any of my installations. I don't think we should do anything other than ensure LL ISOs provides the correct file in the correct location.

The issue we've seen regarding updates is likely connectivity issues to master repo like I said. Note that the reports has also come from users far from US... and I didn't experience the issue myself cos' like I said I dont use the master server.

So, I guess it is time to start recommending users to switch to closer mirrors whenever possible. What else would you recommend?
