Lite Sources Development Thread
#21

(12-23-2016, 01:59 PM)Jerry link Wrote:  Can you set a ping =< response time? If less than 300 then.. else..

"$ping" -ne "good";

Ping only tests for the ability to respond to pings, so that's base OS, parts of the IP stack and the physical links.. but that's all, everything else could be down and you'd not know. Example:

ping ftp.cc.uoc.gr and you will see that server does not respond to ping... next browse to http:/ftp.cc.uoc.gr and you will see the mirror is actually available.

[member=2]Jerry[/member],

I've come back to this with the basics and we have something functional already. I think we can have it ready before April 1st.

Only change I would make here is to make the top listing alphabetical ie. AS EU US. It can of course stay on one line.

The top text should also have brief instructions on how to select a server, easy for me and you to work out but again, think grandma :)

I'll work on polishing it further, for sure. The text shouldn't say US but NA (north america)...

I have excluded the following 2 repositories from the application:

distros.briskget.com/linuxlite
linuxliteca.3load.com

The reason why I did not include those is because they've been offline for a while now (both down for 2 + days at least from what I can tell). We need to make sure we list only reliable mirrors to consider making them available in LL Repo listing. Users will now have the ability to change to a different mirror from GUI for the first time. Could be expected to have more users switching mirrors plus Updatesnotify checks automatically on (user defined) schedule for updates... the last we need is for users getting errors trying to update for days because a repo mirror is down.

Cool. I'd like to save this app for 3.6 We don't wanna overload our community with all the goodies in one hit :) Try to make one major app or feature announcement per release. eg. Lite Updates Notify in 3.4 Shows people theres always some new, major feature in each release. I thought your app already checked repos, then only listed the ones that were online?

Unfortunately that's over my skills with bash. I couldn't find a reliable way to check mirrors without having to hang the application for as long as the mirror check runs... and it takes longer when mirrors are not responding. ping is not a good way to check whether a web server is responding or not. The mirror could be offline while the server responds to ping. An Anycast IP could respond and also not be able to serve repo files. Irrespective, I did add a manual mirrors check option that should make it easy to use and easy to read...  Hope you like it :)

Video has AUDIO. Please lower the volume... sorry, was jamming when recording and didn't notice :P
