I was able to piece my steps together after I posted this and resolved it for now.

There have been a few posts reporting this problem recently.  Can you explain what you found to help others and help us work out if a common error is being made ?

However why would it be listed if it would affect the update manager?

The software sources list is a protected system resource, but it needs to be flexible for normal operation.  Any changes have to be done by an authenticated user operating at privileged level.  However, a user can make mistakes.

What would happen if by accident this happens agaiin?

The update/upgrade process will not work but it will generate an error message showing what is wrong.
