Reading package lists...
E: The repository 'http://archive.canonical.com noble Release' does not have a Release file.

The line beginning 'Err:7' suggests an unexpected repository has been added to your system.
http://archive.canonical.com
However it has no related software. As a result, the update/upgrade fails. We can simply remove the archive repository from the list, but we need to understand any steps you followed which may have caused the canonical archive repository to be added to your system.

Did your system update ok originally when first installed ?
Have you changed anything recently which may have triggered the problem ?
Anything between the last working update/upgrade and the problem beginning - for example installing software or driver modules - may be the cause.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  I may have checked off canonical from the Synaptic manager yesterday.  I was able to piece my steps together after I posted this and resolved it for now.  However why would it be listed if it would affect the update manager?  Ironically the cache was not updating because of canonical.  What would happen if by accident this happens agaiin?

There have been a few posts reporting this problem recently.  Can you explain what you found to help others and help us work out if a common error is being made ?

The software sources list is a protected system resource, but it needs to be flexible for normal operation.  Any changes have to be done by an authenticated user operating at privileged level.  However, a user can make mistakes.

The update/upgrade process will not work but it will generate an error message showing what is wrong.

I would say look at SOFTWARE & UPDATES from whisker menu, select the OTHER software tab and unselect the repository that is causing the issue. Then when you X out it will refresh the cache and it should resolve.

Thank you, removing the repository is part of the solution. You may still have software on your system that added the repository. This software may need uninstalling.
If we knew what was done on your system that caused the repository to be added it might help understanding.

Thank you.

Adding a repository for no reason is not a good thing to do but it is your system and you can do as you wish.

Did you have a specific problem with a package that caused you to run fix broken packages ?
There may be circumstances in which fix broken packages might need to look at repositories but adding an invalid repository is a problem. If we can reproduce what you did it would help.
