When in Live mode, you can't update the system, and whatever changes you make will be lost upon reboot. Your wifi password won't be saved either while in live mode for the same reason; a live USB won't retain whatever data you save. When running Linux from a Live USB, everything is loaded to RAM and nothing is actually written to disk/USB. If you want your changes to be saved, you need to make the Live OS persistent. If you're using Windows, Rufus https://rufus.ie/en/ has the ability to add persistence to the stick.
