With Mediterranean appearances, I can't get my desktop icons into the lower right corner.
With the Raleigh appearance I can, but with with a 'balloon' around the text.
Update:
I found the printer menu; it found my Brother HL-2140.
Desktop, look at my screenshot make sure your settings are the same, the solid colour stays after a reboot:

I also have icons in the bottom right hand corner no problem:
