Lite Software - suggested additions.

Hiya, is there a sticky or something for software addition request rules? I might have just missed it, but i didn't see it.

You probably get quite a few - is it worth creating a webform so that people making the request can see the 'rules' you establish for these requests?

I'd like to request Telegram, or Franz or such be added. Franz at least covers a wide-range of Messenger programs.

A sub-section with some games would be cool too - there's a few famous offerings:
Wenoth, supertux, openttd, 0 A.D.

Jerry posted earlier about the philosophy of Lite Software.  In a nutshell, it is suppose to be an easy way to install the most popular software for a user coming from another operating system.  Not a catch all software center.  I personally do not recognize the software you list.  They seem like niche apps that one in the know would already know how to install.  So they're unlikely candidates to be added to Lite Software.

It appears that Telegram is available only as a Tarball, but Franz supplies a .deb file. You could always attempt using GDebi package Installer, BUT be advised there is no support for such packages. The end result might not be to your liking. You might consider learning to use Synaptic and GDebi Package Installer, as well as learning to install Tarballs. BUT REMEMBER, Lite doesn't support such endeavors. You'll be venturing into uncharted waters each time.

I do have 3 or 4 programs installed on my computers that are NOT in the Lite Software list. A couple aren't even available via Synaptic. I made the decision to install them on one of my laptops to see if I could get them installed and working. Once it worked on one laptop I did the install on the other laptop. To the best of my knowledge I never asked for assistance on this forum.

I cannot speak for the developers, but it has been my experience that the forum users (including the developers) do not as a rule shy away from someone attempting to install legitimate software from an archive or *.deb installation file.  Gdebi and Archive Manager are actually installed as part of Linux Lite.  So installing via those methods is anticipated.


PPA installations can be a tad riskier.  The forum supporters don't totally shy away from that either, but I would encourage the user (as I am sure you would) to find an alternative closer to the traditional methods.

Point well taken, torreydale. I guess I didn't elaborate quite enough, or correctly. I probably should have said that "officially" Lite doesn't support such things. Then I should also have mentioned that there are many forum users on this forum , as well as a few other forums, that would assist in getting packages installed that way.

I should be more careful in what I post.  :-[ That was, in fact, poorly worded. I will gladly accept my 20 lashes. And to Derek, my apologies for my fairly misleading reply to your post. I guess what I was trying to get across is that making a decision to use means other than the "Lite Software" method could result in a learning curve for you. I never meant to state that the members of this forum would turn a cold shoulder. That has NEVER been the case. This has proven to be one of the friendliest and most helpful Linux forums I have ever been a member of.
