Replaced Zorin OS 9

When I first started looking at Linux distros I was impressed by the reviews of Zorin OS 9 and so i replaced Win 7 on a laptop with Zorin. Since then I found Linux Lite and have installed it on two computers...yesterday I replaced the fairly heavy Zorin with yet another Linux Lite installation and the old laptop seems to have gained a new life.

Zorin is a good distro but IMO Linux Lite is better.

I never ran Zorin. I tried out Zevon 1.0 in its infancy. It was a pretty slick distro then.
I have not tried the 5.0 version though. So cannot comment on it.

I have had Zorin dual-booted with LL2.  In fact, these two distros were my hot favourites, from having tried numerous ones, following my exit from Win XP in April this year.  Zorin is very beautiful, programmes open very crisply (no noticeable lagginess on my Asus laptop; 4GB RAM, 4-core CPU), and it shows great hardware compatibility, but it has been plagued by instability (v9 much more than v6.4), e.g. AWN bar issues, unpredictable reversion to Ubuntu,  bugginess in many programmes so they fail to work out of the box (e.g. podcasts in Rhythmbox, Oracle Virtualbox, Sound Recorder, etc). All this has made it somewhat unreliable.

Linux Lite 2.0 is now my distro of choice,  because it seems to be a very stable and dependable.  I have had no problems with it since April.  Also, and just as importantly, I find the community here extremely supportive and so very helpful (pitched at my newbie level), which means I have got round most problems that I've needed solving such as 'how to create a shared data partition between Win7 and LL2', etc.  I found the support in this forum invaluable - without it I'd be clueless!  I can't understand why LL  currently has a Distrowatch ranking of only 45 (though I'm unconcerned by this) - in my view it qualifies for the top 10, though it is clearly my no.1...

PS: the Zorin 9 grub screen looks really cool - maybe some ideas there for smartening up the LL2.0 grub screen...

Thanks mike and Alex, kind words There are good reasons why Linux Lite doesn't feature much higher on Distrowatch.

1.) We deliberately target Windows people. We don't say to linux people, 'here's Linux Lite, you should use it as your preferred distro'.
Distrowatch is a host for Linux distribution information, most of these distros are for existing linux users, some are for both windows and linux people, but don't necessarily target either exclusively.

2.) Linux Lite is supposed to be as nooby friendly as possible, this of course is a continual work-in-progress. Existing linux people don't actively seek nooby friendly, they've progressed past the nooby stage. They look for other attributes like, speed, eye candy, application set, what kernel is on offer, desktop environment, in fact the list goes on.

For these reasons we will always feature around the 20 - 40 rankings which is of no importance to me personally, as long as we stay on the front page (Top 100) where we can be discovered I'm a happy chappy.

Linux Lite 2.0 is now my distro of choice, because it seems to be very stable and dependable.  I have had no problems with it since April.  Also, and just as importantly, I find the community here extremely supportive and so very helpful ... it is clearly my no.1

I feel exactly the same way.

The speed, stability and unique features of the distro. The friendly and helpful forums. The clearly designed Help Manual.

It has extended the life of my (very) old computer, and when I finally upgrade will be the sole OS on my new system.

in the past year i went on a search and tried all kinds of linux from crunchbang to zorin and so on, i always end up back on linux lite tho. i seen videos giving other os's like lubuntu tons of credit and youtubers might suspect i am an author because i always try to tell people online and real life that this in my opinion is the best os you can run. i run it on two very old computers (one has just under 1 gig of ram) to my current desktop which is old but decent, and removed windows 7 from my new laptop before ever bothering. forget dual boot i just nuked it, i don't game so i will forever be a Linux Lite fan thanks to makers i hope people donate for your work at taking and making a practical os that many more will enjoy i'm sure in the future...

I have tested Zorin 9 and it had some great features but a lot of instability. I have written a review which may appear in "Full Circle". I am now testing Linux Lite 2.2Beta and I am really impressed. It is so stable and easy to use. I particular like the multiple work spaces with their own desktop. The choice of default apps is also ideal (for me). I can understand it's appeal to Windows users but it is also appealing for experienced users who are not limited by old machines. Congratulations to Jerry and the team; it is so rare for a new release to be so bug-free.
