Goodbye Windows, hello Linux
#11
Howdy tec10:

I still have a soft spot for Kubuntu, even played with plasma 5 and got it stable to my liking. Had to use that drive in another PC due to a drive failure though.

After hearing so much about Mint I fell in love with Mint 9, It just worked on everything I put it on. I am currently running the latest Mint Cinnamon on my main PC and Mate on my Media machine.

It was on the Mint site that I first heard about Linux Lite. Linux Lite has become my GoTo OS. I still have some older P4 845 board computers as well as AMD equivelents.
I bounce between 1.6 and 2.2 on these and recommend 1.6 to others with older PCs because of the Kernal and video issues that have been reported by some.

Linux Lite is a fantastic OS with a very friendly and helpful support group. I really hope more users get to know about and use it.

Take care All.
Robert

PS: The best thing to happen to Linux in general was for MS to drop support on XP. Their loss the best OS's gain. We are winning and all the Developers just keep making it better. Thank you all for your efforts.

Just wait until folks figure out that Windows 10 is a 'subscription-based service', and don't want to pony up for it. Also, no Media Center in Win 10, so I won't be upgrading from 8.1 unless there's a hack to add it in from a previous version. (Glad I uninstalled GWX!)

When this takes place, Linux will grow by leaps and bounds as a result, and LL will be there and ready for them...

According to http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/...ppens-next  there is no subscription. We shouldn't be discussing windoze here, but I think it is necessary not to alarm people who *have* to use an inferior OS. Wink
1) Lenovo T520 i5 LL3.8 8GB ram, fast & stable
2) Medion P4 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, quite fast & stable
3) eeePC 901 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, fast & stable
4) eeePC 701 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, slower & stable but small and light enough to travel with me to New Zealand when visiting family in Blenheim.

You are correct, no subscription on Windows 10. But Windows 10 "is" the last "MS Windows", what come next..??
Say 2/3 years later,, Da Dah they announce say "MS NG"(Next Generation), I made that up,
but they will have something, and I'm pretty sure it won't be free..!!

I would hazard a guess they will offer a "Desktop as a Service" to the home/consumer market, all cloud based virtual.
with "real" media installs to businesses and devs.

MS don't do anything for nothing, It's all smoke & mirrors and spin...

What *I* gleaned from the article you referenced is that no one can really say how it will all play out - least of all, M$. Both of them go all over the place.

They even mention it possibly becoming open-source at some point - which is what they should have done with XP. In a nutshell, it's free until they no longer say it is.

To the extent that it may affect the future of Linux, it IS relevant. Nonetheless, we'll change the subject anyway...

I would suggest that, except for those who are doing processor intensive stuff, the main advantage  with LL is that you can keep hardware running until  the latter fails.  No need to buy extra sports car  performance to do normal office/home day to day work.

i.e. not be forced to upgrade just so that YOU can keep operating!! OS blackmail IMHO.  Therefore the next crop of those for conversion will be the Vista users for whom it will be difficult to obtain  genuine Windows 7 for their machines, without running the  counterfeit guantlet
2006 - HP DC7700p ultraslim Desktop Intel 6300 cpu  4GB Ram LL3.8 64bit.
2007 - Fujitsu Siemens V3405 Laptop  2 GB Ram LL3.6 32bit. Now 32bit Debian 9 + nonfree.
2006 - Fujitsu Siemens Si1520 Laptop Intel T720 cpu 3GB Ram   LL5.6 64 Bit
2014 - Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E754 Intel i7 4712MQ 16GB Ram LL6.6

It's funny you should mention all that as It's what I've just done this week.

I teach the over 50's clients at AgeUK on how to use computers and the Internet. Seeing as though I'm also a computer engineer, I like to sort out their computers of any problems before I start the course. It makes it so much easier to teach them when their computers actually work Wink

My new client had a single core 2.0Gb laptop with only 1Gb of shared memory and a crappy Vista install (that wasn't really usable due to Vista being buggy and the CPU being constantly stuck at 100%). For the age of the laptop and the use that she needed it for Linux Lite seemed a good fit. She will probably want to get a new computer in 5 years or so anyway.

I haven't suggested Linux to any of my clients before because of it not fully supporting things like Flash and Silverlight, but seeing as Flash is becoming blocked by browsers and Microsoft have stopped supporting Silverlight recently, I thought why not? The only other reason that I wouldn't suggest that my clients use Linux is the official support, but most computer engineers have at least basic Linux experience these days anyway; And if they don't then they're not very good at their job and my clients should stay away from them.

My client seemed very pleased when I gave her a quick run through so she took it home for a test run. I'll see how she's got on on Monday, fingers crossed Smile

EDIT: Just tried Windows 10 today. Slow as hell on a 3Gh desktop machine with 4Gb of RAM and a half decent Nvidia graphics card. Not impressed.
