PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - N4RPS - 10-06-2014 Hello, All! Some of my older laptops have only one USB port, or support only USB 1.1. For the Dell Latitude C640, both of these apply. At the same time, the C640 also has one or two unused PCMCIA slots available. Having found a cheap used PCMCIA 2.0 card at my local computer surplus store, I stuck it into the C640. The Linux kernel recognizes and supports these cards, or at least the one I purchased - a Zonet ZUN2200. This card adds two USB 2.0 slots. This offers a 10X increase in the USB data transfer rate, and allows the use of newer USB 3.0 devices at USB 2.0 speed, as many USB 3.0 devices won't work on USB 1.1 ports. For high demand accessories, the card also supports a plug-in cable to power the new slots from the USB 1.1 port, or an external 5 VDC power supply... 73 DE N4RPS Rob Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - ohjrson - 10-12-2014 Hmmm VERY interesting, What is the name of the pcmcia card? Sounds like I need to see if I can find one of those. Will it come up in the boot sequence to boot from the usb? Let me know ohjrson Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - rokytnji - 10-12-2014 (10-12-2014, 12:05 PM)ohjrson link Wrote: Hmmm VERY interesting, What is the name of the pcmcia card? Sounds like I need to see if I can find one of those. Will it come up in the boot sequence to boot from the usb? I run usb 2.0 + firewire + mini-firewire combo pcmcia cards on my older laptops like a Panasonic CF-48 and IBM T23. I run Liqourix kernels on a different distro other than Linux-Lite on those laptops. Bios won't boot off pcmcia period, unless you change the bootloader on mbr of hard drive to a pcmcia type of bootloader like PLOP or Smart Boot Manager. I am not hip on which includes pcmcia boot options. On mine. The kernel recognizes all firewire and usb ports though after a bootup. I have some old lspci reports showing this to be true on the net. Code: @Biker:~$ lspci -knn That readout is from 2012 on my IBM A22M I sold (for a pretty penny I might add). http://antix.freeforums.org/post24406.html#p24406 edit: I can't really give you the make of the card as it is a cheapo chinese generic pcmcia combo card I purchased 2 of them from ebay years ago at $3.99 a card, free shipping. There is no name on these cards. Exact Image. Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - N4RPS - 10-12-2014 Hello! No, Plop will not boot a USB drive from PCMCIA/CardBus, but will read a USB flash drive after it boots from another drive plugged into a USB 1.1 port. I mainly use this adapter to back the PC up onto a USB 3.0 external HD, which will not work with USB 1.1 ports. At one time, I had an HP USB 2.0 PCMCIA around here. If I can find it again, I'll test it. I am not where the other adapter is at the moment, so will have to edit this to add who makes it to the post later... 73 DE N4RPS Rob Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - rokytnji - 10-13-2014 Uh. Ok. Like I said, I am not hip but http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/pcmcia.html Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - N4RPS - 10-13-2014 Hello! I will have to check this out, but it's looking like I owe you an apology... 73 DE N4RPS Rob Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - rokytnji - 10-13-2014 Hey, No apologies allowed on a forum setting. ![]() I am interested to know myself if this is possible. I have other commits going on next week though with AntiX and a Game I am helping another Linux member I know tweak so I can make a quick .deb of the game. It is a oldy goldy type of game that weighs in at 36K so I do not think anyone else may be interested. Just a mental exercise mainly for me. I was only responder to his thread and uploaded tar.gz. I intro'd as a thick skinned linux using biker. So short of cursing, dissing me, or calling me out. I am a pretty laid back kinda dude with a sense of humor. I can come across as a crude, rude, dude in a forum setting sometimes. I blame it on the biker in me though. So do not pay attention to me because if anybody ends up apologizing. It will probably be ME. : ![]() Happy Trails and Sorry Bro, Rok Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - N4RPS - 10-14-2014 Hello! What can I say? No better way to get to 500 posts than by eating some crow! I followed the instructions on the Plop website to create an ISO that supports PCMCIA, burned it to CD, and used it to boot from a flash drive inserted into the adapter. If you have two CardBus slots, if one slot won't work, try the other one... 73 DE N4RPS Rob Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - ohjrson - 10-14-2014 Well how about that.... Need some salt and pepper with that crow? or do you prefer catsup? LOL That's great news, now we should be able to help anyone that has a similar problem...... cool Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite - Valtam - 10-14-2014 Off topic, congrats Rob! You're time here is much appreciated ![]() |
