I just finished doing some searching for discussions about web browsers in Lite. I found a few, but none were exactly what I was looking for, and several of them were pretty dated. I hope this is the correct place to post this. If not, somebody tell me and I'll try and do better.

I have seen more than one comment on the forum about problems with Firefox and a few of you have expressed discontent with how big and bloated Firefox has become. I hold that thought myself. I went through it with Netscape, Firefox, and several Linux distros. Each of them became bigger and more bloated with every update.

So what I'd like to see is which browsers some of you are using and why you chose that specific browser over others. I know that what I'd really like to find is a browser that is lightweight, is fast, offers Flash and Java, and also a few extensions like an ad blocker and a really good download manager. Right now I have Adblock Plus, DownThemAll, and Password Exporter extensions on Firefox.

So, what's your favorite, and why?

I'm trying to set my HP printer to print in black ink (i.e. grayscale using black ink only) by default. This should be possible because before using Linux Lite, this same printer and same desktop PC could be set on Windows 7 to default to this setting. Then if I had a color document to print, I would change it to print in color for my document and afterward I would change it back to black ink only ready for next time.

I can't figure out how to set it to default to black ink only in LinuxLite. Any suggestions please? Is there a setting I have somehow missed?

I've already set the following setting under Menu -> All -> Printers:

Screenshot A:

The problem is that despite this setting shown above, when I go to print, it still defaults to color (this happens whether printing via LibreOffice or via Chrome - those are the main things I print with). Sure, I can get it to print in black ink for the document or website at hand for the individual document being printed, but not as a default setting.

As an example, see below the example of how I have to do it with each document in Chrome:

Screenshot B:

If I hit the "Print" button at top, then it will print in color. If instead I go via "Print using system dialog" seen at bottom, I then get taken to the following dialog:

Screenshot C:

And here I can select black ink instead of color, but it only seems to work for that document only. If I want to print again in black ink, I have to go through "Print using system dialog" and change it to black ink again.

So this is clunky, having to go through this every time I want to print in black ink.  I want it to DEFAULT to black ink (and change/override that setting on the rare occasions I want to print in color), instead of the other way around which is what I have now. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Other info:

Linux Lite recognized my printer right away, I didn't have to install anything myself or do anything via command line. This is all out-of-the-box. I'm not sure if that info was relevant, but wanted to mention in case.

Good day,
Initially I attempted install from the live version of the usb boot drive. The install program ended up quitting and showing a fuzzy screen. I then attempted install from linux lite safe mode. This worked fine. Except now I am trying to install updates and the computer freezes with the same fuzzy screen every time I update.

Hey everyone!  Smile

We all love Linux lite, and we know how awesome the os is. Linux lite is constantly improving in features and accessibility, and getting better and better.

So, as the community we might as well play our part, and help LL get widely known.

What we can do :
1. Review LL on various websites. Eg. Distrowatch, Slant and your favorite.

2. Write about LL on your blog and write review of LL in blog. Commenting on a blog post to let the blogger know about LL.

In case you think more points shall be added here, let me know.

Please consider following :
1. Use sensible language while writing review or comments about LL.

In case you think more points shall be added here, let me know.

Also, don't forget to write here about your contribution on making LL reach to more of them.

Cheers. Smile

Namaskar,  Smile

I was wandering around the web with keyword Linux Lite. I found some useful information which may be used by community and LL team to enhance user experience and to enhance reach.

1. I found some links which have thoughts of users about LL. I am sharing them here.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=225069

The main problem people think, seems to be incompatibility with UEFI. Actually, people are real angry for that.

https://freedompenguin.com/articles/opin...inux-lite/

It's a one year old review, may be useful.

2. When I was searching for an appropriate OS for my PC, I had crawled many comparing sites and many forums to come to a decision, which was Linux Mint XFCE(I'll be honest here). But, only some time after my decision and some time before I had installed OS, I came to know about Linux Lite. And, the result is LL.

May we be lacking in marketing and in taking the word out?

I hope Linux Lite makes top in near future.  Big Grin

Thanks,
Sanmay

After loading of Linux boot and login is fine. None of the above work to shutdown the system. If I press and hold the power button the system will power off..... BUT..... as the power button is released the system boots back up.

Any ideas.... I have followed most suggestions and not found a fix. I do not believe it is an OS problem... seems to me a BIOS problem. There seems to be no setting in the BIOS that will prevent the reboot.

Version
Kernel Linux 4.4.0-70-generic (x86_64)
Compiled #91-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 22 12:47:43 UTC 2017
C Library Unknown
Default C Compiler GNU C Compiler version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.4)
Distribution Linux Lite 3.4

BIOS
Date 09/14/2012
Vendor AMI
Version 8.08

Thanks in advance for and suggestions....

I'm still learning, tweaking, and playing around with this new install of Lite. I'm constantly being amazed at what it can do. One of the problems I was experiencing on my old install of Mint 18.1, was a painfully sluggish Firefox. Not only did it take a LONG time to open the app, everything about my web surfing was slow. I have Internet service with my cable provider and have 100 Mbps service. I was NEVER able to see speeds above about 50 Mbps. While that's plenty fast to do all the things I do, I just felt cheated that I couldn't get everything I was paying for. I just ran another speed test and this one was only 106.40. Yesterday I was constantly hitting 108 - 112 Mbps.

Another thing I'm noticing is that Firefox itself just SNAPS when I do anything like open a new tab, open bookmarks, or open anything on the MenuBar. It's just a great feeling to actually see this laptop performing the way it should be. This G50 isn't a very high end laptop, but with the hardware it does have I knew it should be showing me a lot more than it was with Mint. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not criticizing Linux Mint. I used it for  long time with no complaints. It's just that something started happening between Mint and my 2 laptops about version 17.1 to cause really sluggish performance. It's entirely possible that the real problem was with the laptops, or the way I tweaked my installs, and not with Mint at all. I'm just really pleased with the way the 2 laptops are performing now with Lite. Looks like I'll be around here for a long while.

G'day All,

Just curious about people's opinions on using the btrfs filesystem vs ext4.
I've been using btrfs for new installs of different distro's for about a year now, so far mostly without any hassles.
Apparently it's to be the way of the future, eventually.

What are your thoughts on using or not using it?

I have an LL3.4/Win7 dual-boot setup on a single 250GB SSD, for a Dell Latitude D630.
However, I needed a bigger drive for more data files and also a Windows recovery partition, the latter apparently needing a significant about of disk space.

So, I cloned the above set-up onto a 500GB SSD using the 'dd' command:

Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/sdd of=/dev/sdc

Then, I replaced the laptop's 250GB drive with the 500GB one, and was able to boot into either Win7 or LL3.4 on the larger drive, without any apparent problem. So far, so good  Smile

Next, I tried to open gparted in order to resize some of the partitions on the new larger drive. However, gparted remained stuck indefinitely, the blue progress bar just bobbing repeatedly to the left and right, without anything appearing within the gparted window.  A notification popped up with the following message:
Code:
Libparted Error Invalid partition table on /dev/sda --wrong signature 0.

Because of this, I'm unable to resize the new disk's partitions  Sad
Any help much appreciated ...

Mike

Jerry,
Would you consider MegaSync as an alternative to Dropbox for the LL distros  Based in NZ they offer 50GB of secure cloud storage for free and have linux options..  Trialling it now as Dropbox storage offers limited  "free"capacity by modern standards.
