How to improve HD TV and video?

Hi. Former Windows user here, totally converted to Linux Lite after having tried several distros for many years. So, I'm quite happy with the OS, and I need advice with software and hardware.
My main usage of this machine is watching HD TV and video. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4650, capable of full hardware H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 decoding, according to Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_...celeration>. However, many frames are sometimes dropped and artifacts appear when playing a video stream, which is especially annoying when watching a football game for example.
So, my first question is: Are there some settings I can check and change to improve HD TV and video?
Chris

Hi,
I'm Ian, living in the UK.
I'm coming to Linux Lite from Windows 7 and 10, having also had some minor problems with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Unity.
My move to Linux is a long-term personal project, for home/office use; but beginning more with a "hobby" use while I get used to the new OS (new to me). Having used Windows for 20 years, including as a help desk professional in the past, this represents a quite daunting, and exciting, change. I already use mostly open source apps, most of which LL also uses.
Like many here, I suspect, it is current trends in Microsoft and Windows 10 which is prompting the change. If I had to pick two problems with Windows 10 leading to this, they would be: the forced monthly update cycle (which also prevents cycling between two identical PCs so I always have a nearly up-to-date fail-over unit); and the worry in regard to what data Microsoft is collecting from me, and how securely they are then storing it.
Hopefully as time goes by I can offer support in return for initial support now. My past experience as a help desk professional may help me to help you, longer term.
I would like to thank the community and the developers for what looks to be a welcome distro of Linux; from my initial read you seem to have thought of everything I would want!
Take care, all,
Ian

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! ;D Since I've installed Lite 3.6 I've been facing a frustrating issue; time resets after every boot/reboot. I can fix it manually with the time and date app on settings but whenever I reboot the pc time resets all over again meaning the current time displayed is wrong, delayed by hours! I googled it and tried almost any single solution I found; using a ntp server, hwclock, tzdata, timedatectl, and another one I don’t remember, each one seemed to work until I restarted the OS to find time reset again. So, I ask for your assistance in this matter, any advice is really appreciated. Thanks! By the way, I'm dual booting Windows/Linux Lite and this only happens in Lite, so not a bios issue.

KeePassX - is updating secure?

I am reading the manual on using KeePassX, which I have installed through LL.
I would like to use it but the following article gives me pause to re-consider before I place all my logins in it.
I know the article refers to Kee Pass, and that that is not the same as KeePassX, but presumably the same organization.
https://lifehacker.com/keepass-vulnerabi...1781486764
There is a link https://bogner.sh/2016/03/mitm-attack-ag...ate-check/ in the article to a discussion on potential mitm etc. attacks. The gist is to check update downloads manually, but in the case of LL the updates are done by LL, so hopefully they're all via https?
I tend to trust Electronic Frontier Foundation recommendations, and LL, but the fact that KeePass were using http for updates not so long ago makes me a bit wary.
But maybe all this has been addressed?
I'm fairly new to Linux, so not well versed in the tech side of all this.

Hi all, I am trying to figure out how to update my bios in my Dell XPS 1210. I am surprised there is no automatic program that I can find that does this. Is there one I'm missing. I am a neophyte?

Converting image file formats, e.g. *.png to *.jpg

The other day, while using LL3.6, I needed to convert a *.png image file to an *.jpg one, before I could upload it to a website. I found the solution and thought I would share it with you - it's dead easy, which is what I like ...
It works in the terminal, through the imagemagick application (which is pre-installed on LL3.6), as far as I'm aware.
1. Open terminal
2. Type:
Code: convert image.png image.jpg
... where "image" is the name of your image file
However, you will need to indicate where image.png is located. For example, if it is in 'Downloads' folder, then type:Code: convert /home/[username]/Downloads/image.png image.jpg
It will then leave an image.jpg version of the file in 'Downloads', alongside the image.png one.
Other information:- it will keep the original file you started with, i.e. it won't be deleted during conversion
- other image file types can be converted (e.g. *.gif, *.bmp, *.tif), and in any direction, e.g. bmp to jpg or jpg to bmp, etc
- for batch files (those which contain commands), replace convert with mogrify
- the convert command can be used to rotate or resize images - for further details see https://www.lifewire.com/convert-linux-c...nd-4097060
