  python cryptography bug affecting Kodi
Posted by: ak-77 - 09-25-2017, 08:18 AM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (3)

Hi everyone,

New Linux Lite user here. I have to say I am very impressed by how easy it has become to switch to Linux from Windows. Last time I tried was 15 years ago and I abandoned that pretty quickly after driver issues drove me nuts. This time around it was a breeze.
Anyway, I have installed Linux Lite on an old Acer Aspire laptop that I want to use as a HTPC. I installed Kodi 17.4 on it, and ran into serious crashing issues when using some plugins that stream content from the web (Youtube and Nederland24 plugins). This was fairly frustrating, since it seemed to happen only on the second time I opened Kodi after install. I could delete the .kodi folder and reinstall and everything was fine again, but the next time crashes started occurring again. After some searching, I found this thread (ignore the frustrated user vs developer fight), which pointed to this bug in Ubuntu 16.04, which has been solved in a later version. Updating the python cryptography and openssl packages to the Zesty versions, as suggested in the linked Kodi forum thread, solved the problems for me.
I have no idea how your policy is on matters like this, but since this seems to be a recognized bug in Ubuntu 16.04, would it be an idea to include these package updates in the automatic Linux Lite updates?

  3 years on

I've kept lite on three of my home machines (two laptops and a desktop) for three years now.  The laptops are dual boot win7 (survived the win10 onslaught)/lite and the desktop as lite/test linux os.  I'm still the point and click mouse input fellow, so no screen touch scrolling for me.  As having tried many other linux os's offered in distrowatch, I have not found one that offers the best balance between software bloat/minimalism with out of the box elegance that lite provides.  Keep it up!

Downloaded from synaptic. Version there fails to remove duplicates

https://askubuntu.com/questions/779502/f...delete-bug gives an earlier version to download.
This has been an ongoing problem  - mentioned in this forum previously. 2015?

Software Sources vs. Synaptic and apps versions.
Posted by: nublix - 09-24-2017, 07:06 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I was looking for Sigil and because I didn't see it in SS I assumed it was not available in Lite. After some time, I thought to go look in Synaptic and found it (though its an old version).

Is it safe to assume that not all software listed in SS are the only apps available for installation and one must always check Synaptic as well?

The other thing, other than going into Synaptic, could there be a way to tell the version of the apps in SS?

How to improve HD TV and video?
Posted by: zero - 09-24-2017, 01:03 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (6)

Hi. Former Windows user here, totally converted to Linux Lite after having tried several distros for many years. So, I'm quite happy with the OS, and I need advice with software and hardware.

My main usage of this machine is watching HD TV and video. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4650, capable of full hardware H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 decoding, according to Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_...celeration>. However, many frames are sometimes dropped and artifacts appear when playing a video stream, which is especially annoying when watching a football game for example.

So, my first question is: Are there some settings I can check and change to improve HD TV and video?

  Why lxterminal instead of xfce4terminal?
Posted by: trinidad - 09-23-2017, 06:43 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (5)

I'm sure there are important reasons why lxterminal is bundled as default into the distro. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated because xfce4terminal is very customizable. I use it and enjoy it but I'm sure the there are some caveats.

  Hi everyone

Hi,

I'm Ian, living in the UK.

I'm coming to Linux Lite from Windows 7 and 10, having also had some minor problems with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Unity.

My move to Linux is a long-term personal project, for home/office use; but beginning more with a "hobby" use while I get used to the new OS (new to me).  Having used Windows for 20 years, including as a help desk professional in the past, this represents a quite daunting, and exciting, change.  I already use mostly open source apps, most of which LL also uses.

Like many here, I suspect, it is current trends in Microsoft and Windows 10 which is prompting the change.  If I had to pick two problems with Windows 10 leading to this, they would be:  the forced monthly update cycle (which also prevents cycling between two identical PCs so I always have a nearly up-to-date fail-over unit); and the worry in regard to what data Microsoft is collecting from me, and how securely they are then storing it.

Hopefully as time goes by I can offer support in return for initial support now.  My past experience as a help desk professional may help me to help you, longer term.

I would like to thank the community and the developers for what looks to be a welcome distro of Linux; from my initial read you seem to have thought of everything I would want!

Take care, all,

Ian
