In support of Jerry's firm position regarding UEFI I'd like to share the presentation of Ronald Min
Replace Your Exploit-Ridden Firmware with Linux

Replace Your Exploit-Ridden Firmware with Linux - Ronald Minnich, Google With the WikiLeaks release of the vault7 material, the security of the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) firmware used in most PCs and laptops is once again a concern. UEFI is a proprietary and closed-source operating system, with a codebase almost as large as the Linux kernel, that runs when the system is powered on and continues to run after it boots the OS (hence its designation as a “Ring -2 hypervisor"). It is a great place to hide exploits since it never stops running, and these exploits are undetectable by kernels and programs.
Our answer to this is NERF (Non-Extensible Reduced Firmware), an open source software system developed at Google to replace almost all of UEFI firmware with a tiny Linux kernel and initramfs. The initramfs file system contains an init and command line utilities from the u-root project (http://u-root.tk/), which are written in the Go language.
About Ronald G. Minnich Ron Minnich is a Software Engineer at Google. He has contributed to many open source projects in the last several decades, including the Linux kernel (9p file system); the FreeBSD kernel (rfork); and Plan 9 (many different areas). He directed the team that ported Plan 9 to the Blue Gene supercomputers. He invented LinuxBIOS (now called coreboot) in 1999. He is one of the core contributors to the Harvey operating system. His most recent Linux Foundation talk was on how to build your own signed version of ChromeOS and resign your Chromebook with your personal keys in 2016.

Hi Linux Lite community,
I hope you are doing all well. I'm thinking to buy an external dvd player and actually this model GP57ES40 or GP50NB40 my question is that if i plug it normally through usb will the dvd player work fine with LL ? Or it will not support it.
Thank you very much in advance!

I looked at a similar post and almost exactly like that post there are no other choices for screen resolution except in this case: 640-480
I ran xrandr in terminal and this is what I got:
administrator@administrator-Aspire-5000:~$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 640 x 480, maximum 640 x 480 default connected 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm
640x480 73.00* administrator@administrator-Aspire-5000:~$
I also checked for drivers and the only thing that came up was:
Unknown: Unknown
This device is using an alternative driver.
O Using Processor microcode firmware for AMD CPUs from ad64-microcode (proprietary)
O Do not use this device.
I tried changing it to the first choice, restarting then going to display - still no choice for resolution change and then I went back and reverted to "Do not use this device" and still exactly the same, no choice for resolution.
Not sure what I should do now. It is liveable, however all the windows I open are too large for the laptop screen so a bit of a pain to move it around to close or view.
Removing them from Thunar is simple. I can also delete the cache (s) found in my home directory - but that doesn't stick.
How can I delete / prevent them permanently from the desktop? thanks, -E

Hi Jerry,
If you feel like sharing...I'm curious as to what distro(s) was your preferred daily driver prior to creating Linux Lite.
Thx
I thought I'd let you guys know that I won't be around very much for a while. Not that I'm super active on here, but I normally at least login once a day to read the latest posts. I've been given ownership and control of a model car forum, which is a hobby of mine. To cut through all the small talk and get to the point, I decided to take the forum over to offer model builders another place to visit that is friendly and helpful. A couple of the "big name" forums seem to be cluttered with bickering and name calling, so a lot of guys left those big forums and found small, friendly places to spend their online time. That's a whole lot like this forum. You just don't read anything on here that's derogatory towards any person. That's the kind of environment I'm going to provide for members of my new forum. It's actually a very old forum, but has been nearly inactive for the past couple years.
Anyway, enough about all that. I just wanted to say I won't be real active here for a while until I can get that forum up and running smoothly. If any of you guys happen to be model car builders, or think you might like to get into the hobby, feel free to check my forum out. Just remember that I haven't even started to clean things up and get it running smoothly. Things will change a bit over the next few weeks. Thanks!
