I have a Virtual Machine that I haven't used in awile that is still on v3.4 that I wan't to update to 3.8. The Updates on 3.4 fail, so I decided to install v3.8 on top of 3.4 which seemed to work fine, except that I can't update v3.8 due to problems with the program sources. I've attached a copy of the error log in the event that it helps, but I'm wondering I can get a copy of the correct sources from somewhere and replace them. I don't recall adding any PPAs that were non-standard to this install.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 which has an issue displaying only a partial screen once I install Linux distros. This AM I installed Linux Lite and experienced the same problem. Not familiar with this software, and working in 1/4 of the normal screen, I stumbled into Settings Editor and manually changed the resolution from 640x480 to 1024x768. I then rebooted and ended up with a black screen.
I forced a restart and booted into recovery which started up and displayed 1024x768. Thought everything was good ... but on a second restart, found that normal boot ends up with a black screen.
How might I correct the problem I created in xfconf? Secondly, any ideas how I might resolve the original problem with the partial screen display?
Thank you in advance ...
How long will Linux Lite 4.X be supported?
Curious as to whether Linux Lite could work on Orange Pi? (Specifically, the Orange Pi Plus 2E http://www.orangepi.org/orangepiplus2e/ ? ) It supports Ubuntu, so I was wondering. Would appreciate any info anyone could provide. Thanks.
Hello, I don't know if that post goes in the french forum portion but that language part seems to be deserted. Anyway being very experience with Mint, here is couple of thing I went through with my first Lite installation.
- the installer crash close to the end but having restarted it, it finally went through.
- first thing you notice, unlike Mint, the OS installation is not in the language you choose at install. Puzzling.
- Fair enough so the welcome screen mention something about languages. I selected that, then it offer to install updates which I did. After that nothing else but after a while I found out that this windows is scrollable (not obvious) and you can find that section further down.
- It then ask to update language files, ok then proceed to set my language (French Canadian). Reboot, mostly ok but my French Canadian keyboard is still in English. Found the keyboard setting and the default had to be deselect for some reason. French keyboard is installed but Alt-characters do not work. Fiddle around with "change page formatting and Compose keys (don't know what that does) but after resetting it to default, French Canadian I presume) it work fine.
- first boot, the name of the home folders has to change to French names. Select Yes. It work mostly but every time I login I have a message about "configured download folder does not exist, Please make sure that the Download folder exist or configure it with bluemoon-services ???. The "Download" folder is called "Téléchargements" in French. How can I get rid of this ??
- A few missing translation especially with right clicking with the mouse (Open terminal here, search here etc ...)
- Thunar system menu entries are still in English. Else here some entries are in English and menu not translated.
It seems that Lite is more oriented for English speaking users probably due to fewer developers in Linux Lite.
The rest seems to be pretty much identical to Mint Xfce which is fully translated. It is still nice to have choices,
Thanks
I have just installed version 3.8 on a 16G Toshiba USB drive with 4G of persistence.
When I look in my Documents folder it shows I have only 2.4G of persistence available.
Is this because I have installed additional software - eg: Spotify?
If so is there a way for such additional programmes to be installed in the remaining space on the "non persistent" area of the drive?
Hi forum.
I've just set up an rsync command to make backup from home folder (ext4) to a mounted fat partition (Veracrypt volume), and I ran into a issue that rsync choose to make backup from most files - instead of make backup of only the files where date is different. That is it seems to make extra backup of files that seemingly/should have the same date stamp in source as in destination folder.
The second thing is that rsync does creates numerous empty folders into subfolders of backup directory (/rsync_backup/).
The question I have - what causes this behavior?
Extended info or comments that I believe may be relevant:
- I have run rsync before some times on Ubuntu, but never went ahead and asked in any forum. Seems that this happens only the first time that rsync is run towards a destination directory. Next time I run rsync - if it behave the same as before - same command would work as expected, and only those files that is truly changed will copy (and backup is made from old version).
- Before I ran rsync towards the new FAT volume, I had an old FAT volume that was filled up. So I made a new bigger volume - still fat file system because of access within windows - and copied all files from the old fat volume to the new fat volume.
- Is there known issues with rsync handling of fat file stamp?
The full rsync command:
rsync -tarv -b --backup-dir="/home/user2/c2/rsync_backup/$(date +"%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M")" ./ "/home/user2/c2"The /home/user2/c2/ is the fat volume mounted by Veracrypt. Current directory is where I copy files from, ~/Documents$
[edit]
After searching around the web, I found that there is a time-stamp issue in fact when using rsync between ext/fat file systems. So I changed to:
rsync -trv --size-only --delete-before -b --backup-dir="/home/user2/c2/rsync_backup/$(date +"%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M")" ./ "/home/user2/c2"That raise another issue - the backup-dir is located within the destination folder and was not a good idea. Is there any other options other than move it elsewhere - so that rsync doesn't deletes this particular folder?
Hi,
having read of Bluetooth security issues, particularly the BlueBorne malware, I wonder is it safe to use bluetooth to connect phone hotspot to LL computer?
