  Making Selections In Settings
Posted by: mdiemer - 02-08-2018, 02:48 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

My first dumb question: When making selections in Settings, I am confused about how to do this. It's those little squares you have to click on/in. Which is on and which is off? When it looks slightly raised, or when it looks depressed? I want to be sure, so I don't go messing things up too much. And BTW, is there a way to return everything to Default Settings?

Thanks,

Mike

Edit: I have reposted this in "Other"  (sorry)

Main menu option Windows Wireless Drivers
Posted by: drrdf - 02-07-2018, 11:02 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

I am running Linux Lite 3.4 on one 64 bit dual core PC; on this PC there is the option in the main menu to install windows wireless drivers. When I have attempted to install Linux Lite 3.4  on another 32 bit PC this option does not appear on the main menu, nor does it do so with version 3.6. Also there are differences when running up the system; for example the label Linux Lite 3.4 is displayed whilst running up on the first PC but not on the other. Does anyone know why this is please? I have only wireless cards which do not have Linux drivers, so I need this option on the menu to set up  the wireless card to connect to Internet.

Changing menu entries from category and/or creating new ones
Posted by: Moltke - 02-07-2018, 10:31 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! Smile

In this tutorial we'll see how to change a menu entry from one category into another one and/or creating new ones by using the menu maker/customizer app "main menu" available in LL. In this example I'll change "printers" from system menu entry into the graphics one.

First thing you need to do is click on menu or press home key, type "menu" click enter and "main menu" will start.

Next, select the category where the app/tool you want to change/delete is, in this case system > printers, click on it and select properties.

A window properties is open, copy that info as you'll need it for next step which is clicking in the desired menu destination, in this case "Graphics". Once in graphics menu, in the "main menu" app window select "new item", a new window opens for you to type in the new item details, use the ones you wrote/copied before and click on "ok" to close that window. The new item should now be created and will appear in the graphics menu.

If you want/wish no longer to keep "printers" menu on system entries select that item in "main menu" app window and next click on delete

And that's it, easy right? Smile Now you can close "main menu" app window, click on menu or press home key, point your mouse to graphics menu  and see your new created/reallocated item

If creating a non existant/available menu entry, steps are almost the same; select new item option from within "main menu" app, type in item properties in the window/box, click "ok" and that should be it.

PS: I made all of this in a LL 3.8 64bit VM. Oh boy VMs are really helpful  8)

  Is My Version 64 bit?
Posted by: mdiemer - 02-07-2018, 02:19 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

I installed LL awhile back on an old hard drive, just to check it out. I don't remember if it was 32 or 64 bit. Recently, I decided I really liked it, and cloned that disk to a newer one. The version I had was 3.4, so I upgraded to 3.8, the latest. That went smoothly.

During registration for this forum, I had to specify my version of LL. It was pre-filled in as 32 bit. I checked the system info app, which said it is (X86_64), which kind of of confused me.

So, which version do I have?

Thanks,

mdiemer

  How To Install Gdebi
Posted by: mdiemer - 02-07-2018, 02:09 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

New member here, liking LL more and more. I would like to install a good but simple calendar, and am looking at Day Planner. It looks like I need Gdebi to install it. I made some unsuccessful attempts to download and install it (Gdebi), and would like to know the best way to do this.

Thanks, and great operating system,

mdiemer

Hi my name is Casino, chosen because I was born in a Casino, absolutely no IT background, been using Linux for around 16 years,I have been an avid distro hopper but slowed that down a little now.
What I know about Linux is entirely self taught and acquired by reading forums ,articles and everything I could find about Linux, the cruel wags would say I still do not know much about Linux !
I am absolutely amazed at the quality of Linux Lite,on a par with Linux Mint and far ahead of some of the Buntus,it is just that everything just works first time every time and many top name distros have surprising glitches in them and the same glitches appear release after release.I particularly like being able to install the latest Kernel. My set up is a Biostar Celeron N3050H mobo in a minibox M350 case, with 8GB of ram and a Samsung 840 120GB SSD ,with no case fan,no processor fan and an external power supply it is completely silent with a nominally  6 watt power draw it runs on less than a tenth of the power of my other computers and is as quick as the Pentium 3Gig that I used as my main computer only a few years ago.I hope to get to know some of you over the coming months,I do believe that quality software attracts quality folks and it will be a pleasure to be in your company ! Smile
