Installed to Linux Lite today my all time favorite game, Jagged Alliance 2

Since I installed it just today, it is hard to know about the bugs, but so far everything seems
to work just great - except that I haven't figured out yet how to play in fullscreen mode instead of a window.

Installing it is easy: Since the Copyright holders released the source code for public domain years ago, people
have been able to port the whole game to work on Linux, without emulators or virtual machines.
The Debian package may be downloaded from here: https://github.com/ja2-stracciatella/ja2..._amd64.deb

However, you will still need the data files from the original Jagged Alliance CD to be able to play it.

So... Many old laptops have a CD/DVD which nobody uses any more. Optical media is becoming old...

But since the laptop may still have an optical drive, why not replace it with a secondary hard-drive?
This gives you many possibilities. You may partition it and use it for documents, music, movies and so on.

One possibility is to add redundancy to your system by creating a RAID1 volume. This means that
in case one of the hard-drives fails / breaks, you will not lose the data in that volume, since RAID1 mirrors
all the data to both disks.

So, how to do it?
First of all, you cannot do it if your first (primary) hard-drive is full, meaning that you cannot add a new partition in it.
(You can add a new partition if you have for example a separate /home partition - then you may copy all of it's contents
into some temporary location, say /tmp/home, then unmount it and use gdisk to use it as RAID mirror, see below ).

BUT: The best way to achieve this, is while doing a fresh LL installation, use 'Do something else' partitioning option and
leave some space unallocated (free, not partitioned space), eg. 16G for example.

First you need one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-2-5...8016235485

You may buy one in a local store or anywhere you want, I bought mine from China since they are very cheap.
Then you also need the secondary HD, which is a standard 2.5" SATA HD. The capacity does not need to be the same
as in your primary HD.

Once you have both, the caddy and the hd, you may then remove the CD/DVD and replace it with the secondary HD.
It's not hard to do. If you have ever played with LEGO bricks, you should be able to do this in a couple of minutes.

Once you have the new HD installed, boot your Linux and choose which files are the most important to you.
For me, they were all the files in my Documents folder, so I chose to create a RAID1 for them.

Let's assume you want to have RAID1 redundancy with your Documents folder too. Then you would first create a
new partition to your new hard-drive:

Start console (if it's not yet open) and command

Code:
sudo su

First prepare your new hard-drive:
Code:
gdisk /dev/sdb
Type 'p' to see the capacity of the disk and verify that it is the new disk
Code:
Command (? for help): p

You will see the Model of the device and it's capacity. If they are correct, you may proceed, otherwise press 'q'.
Then create a new partition which is equal in size as your unused space in the primary disk or less than that.
Code:
Command (? for help): n
Code:
Partition number (default 1): 1

When it asks the 'Last Sector', type the amount of Mega or Gigabytes, that you have unused in the primary disk:
Example, if you have 16G or more:
Code:
+16G

When it asks the Hex code, type 'fd00' and press 'ENTER'
Then press 'w', ignore warnings the new disk is ready for RAID.
Just inform kernel about it, by commanding:
Code:
partprobe /dev/sdb

To be continued in part 2...

Hi all, does anyone know of a good program for Genealogie that works with LL 4.0? I have Gramps installed but would want to try out some others (if there are any).

@ringnsma mentioned PinguyBuilder in connection with LL4.0, which prompted me to try it with LL3.8
I downloaded version 4 deb package (for ubuntu 16 systems) and it installed perfectly. To me it is more intuitive than systemback and seems to generate an ISO much quicker. A live memory stick made from a PinguyBuilder generated ISO, booted correctly and included all the extra software (lots!) which I installed on the basic LL3.8 system. If continued testing proves reliable, I shall remove no longer supported Systemback and retain PinguyBuilder as my sytem backup application. All but one of my PCs are 32bit so I can't upgrade to LL4.0 and I prefer to keep them all on the same software version.

Hi folks. Have som beginner-issues using grep here.
I'm up to search for the term "--prune-empty-dirs" in the man page of rsync. So I tried to ran this command:

Code:
man rsync | grep '--prune' -A1 -B4'
Problem is I get error grep: unrecognized option '--prune'.[size=1em]How can I make grep to recognise the text pattern "--prune" as the pattern to search for?[/size][size=1em]I can remove the two dashes, but that is not what I want to do.[/size][size=1.45em][edit while write post][/size]Ok, I found the solution after I remembered to search the web for "grep escape character" (that is probably what I should had ask for) - so I got it to work with the same command, but backslashes in front of all dashes:
Code:
man rsync | grep '\-\-prune' -A1 -B4

What's up guys, this is my first forum topic, so sorry if i posting in the wrong place of forum.
I have a not very good notebook, which I would like to use again, but this time with linux. After some testing with other distributions (which did not recognize the video driver or the network driver), I did some research and opted for Linux Lite. After the installation, I have some problems, which are:

-The icons that were on the desktop when I installed it, are gone (Not a big problem, but it might be useful for you).

-The computer is too slow. When i use firefox, 96% of my CPU gone, open any window is slow, and when i installed firefox in my language, the firefox icon dont appeared.

-The computer don't reboot (a bugged pixels screen appears) and takes a lot of time to Boot Up.

Well guys, if any of you can help me, i will be VERY GREATFUL. Sorry for my bad english. I'm brazilian.

My notebook specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 T5500 1.66Ghz

RAM: 2GB

Last version of Linux Lite.

Not video card.

I'm running Linux Lite 3.8 on a Dell Latitude E6500. I recently  purchased a Canon TR8520 multi-function printer. Canon provides Debian package print and scanner drivers. I Installed both without issue. I can print to the printer just fine, however simple scan reports no scanners found when you open it. It doesn't matter if the printer is connected via the wireless network or directly via a USB cable. I have the same  issue with my Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE Lenovo Thinkpad as well. Any suggestions?

Hello all,

I recently acquired some old hardware for free. I'm taking the A+ exam soon and was just wanting a system to mess around with for some hands on experience.

The station is a Dell Dimension B110 with these specs:
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.53 GHz
RAM: 256 MB DDR SDRAM @333 MHz
BIOS Version: A01
Not sure on the motherboard model. (If someone could tell me how to find it, I'd really appreciate it!)

It came with an 80 GB HDD, however after listening for awhile I quickly learned that it was shot. So, being that Windows XP was on that hard drive and I don't have access to an install CD I found Linux Lite. I downloaded Linux Lite 3.8 32-bit from the linuxliteos website under the "Linux Lite 3.8 Final Released" thread by Jerry. I burned the .iso file to a 32 GB USB drive using a software called Etcher, creating a bootable drive. Popped the USB into my older machine and booted into the Linux lite installer. Started the install, but after the yellow feather splash screen it displays a bunch of code that I don't understand. https://imgur.com/KuCFRRW

Some threads I saw suggested the USB port and/or the system itself isn't getting enough power: I moved it to 3 different outlets and tried every USB port in the front and back and still the same thing. Oh, and the only things I have plugged into the motherboard is a USB keyboard and a VGA cable. I also ran memtest86 and the tests came back clear, tried running it in safe mode and it just goes in cirlces between the installer and Dell splash screen, and I've tried 2 other stations of similar specs and the same thing happens. The common theme between all of them is that none of them have hard drives.

I was thinking maybe since the system doesn't have a hard drive, the OS doesn't have anywhere to install to. So I went and bought a second 32 GB USB drive in hopes that the OS would install to it but alas; it still persists. Does every computer require a hard drive to install the OS to? I would prefer not to have to get another hard drive, so if there's a way around it that'd be awesome.
