Trying to update LL 3.8 on a Dell 1545 with "replaced" HDD
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 11-28-2018, 03:12 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

So I'm trying to rehabilitate a Dell Inspiron 1545 whose HDD died by switching out the functioning HDD from a Dell Inspiron N5030 which I know was working.  The N5030 had a TV fall on the screen and so I felt best to use it's HDD in the 1545 rather than an external monitor with the N5030.

The Dell 1545 fired up fine and loaded the LL 3.8 that was on the N5030's HDD.  It kinda acted funny as the cut, copy, delete, paste menu kept popping up while I was navigating to the updates section.  Anyway I managed to get the updates and clicked on downloading them and after about 10 mins the battery ran out and I had not realized the charger was not plugged in properly (hence why it ran out of power).

When I plugged it into power the same "odd" menu would come up over what I was chasing, but I managed to get into updates again.  It fetched the updates and then when I clicked to download it came up with this message:

E:dpkg was interrupted you must run manually 'sudo dpkg--configure-a'  (this is what is looks like from the pic, however I can't be 100% sure of spacing...)

So I opened a terminal window and put this in (I didn't cut and paste it I typed it) and it says no command found.

My questions are;
1) since the HDD was running fine in the N5030 using an external monitor, is the "odd" acting because it's in a different computer?
2) Should I simply try doing a fresh install of LL 3.8 from my USB?
3) is it worth running the sudo command above if its shorter and if so what have I done wrong AND once I get the right command will it do it all itself?  I'm not really familiar with doing a lot of stuff in terminal.

Is it possible to install LL keeping an existing partition (an ext4?)
Posted by: Vera - 11-28-2018, 01:26 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

I'm looking to install LL4.2 as the sole operating system on my computer (replacing the 3.8 that is currently running). In the pic below is my current disk partitioning scheme. I'd like to know if it's easily possible for a beginner such as myself to install LL4.2 keeping my /dev/sda6 partition AND all the data it contains? If so, can that partition be mounted when needed with my 4.2 system?

It's basically a backup directory where I keep backup files. I think of it basically like a big USB stick that happens to be internal instead of external.

I don't want to keep anything else, just /dev/sda6.

  Session lock preventing sleep mode?
Posted by: MS - 11-27-2018, 09:11 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (1)

Session lock works properly now on a laptop, nonetheless each time I close the lid - initiating sleep mode - with the session lock feature on, the display would shut down and the session lock is confirmed to kick in, but the fan in the machine keeps spinning long time and by the general appeal it seems to be constantly working.

Hello everyone,

I started using linux 3 years ago switching between distros without actually knowing what i'm doing. Finally settled on linux lite about 6 months ago and i'm a believer now.

I have been/still am a copy paste guy following tutorials without ever learning anything but im finally taking the right steps to at least know what it's i'm copying with the aim being to learn as i go along.

  USB Devices don't mount.
Posted by: PCTECH - 11-26-2018, 09:00 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (3)

Hello

I just did a virgin install of Linux Lite 4.0 on my Dell Latitude e6500 with a new SSD drive (and upgrade)
I notice that USB drives don't mount most of the time. They can't be seen in either the file manager or on the desk top.
This system seems to works fine otherwise. When I DESELECTED all the auto-mount, auto-open options in the removable devices settings, it appears to have corrected the issue (at least as far as I've tested so far)
It seems that the settings for this seem to work in reverse. Is this a known bug?
I didn't have this issue with  the LL3x series.

How to make an installed application show up in start menu?
Posted by: Vera - 11-26-2018, 07:14 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (7)

Normally applications that I install just automagically show up in the start menu. But when I downloaded the latest version of the Icecat browser  https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/ (v 60.3.0, Nov 2018) from GNU mirror site, I could get it to work by clicking on the Icecat icon in the extracted files (see attached image).

The problem is that I could not get Icecat to show up on my start menu or application list anywhere. How can I make it be recognized by start menu? I now have the browser, but no easy way to launch it besides going into ~/Downloads/icecat/ and clicking on the icecat icon.

Even if I right-click on a .html file in my home directory to open it with a browser, Icecat is not listed as one of the options to open it with.

What is the best way for me to solve this problem, do you think? I realize that this is something to do with the way the Icecat software is set up, and not the fault of Linux Lite, but I was wondering if there was a way for me to somehow add it to the start menu under Internet?

  Panda Wireless USB not recognized
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 11-26-2018, 01:27 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (3)

Hello,
I have used this WiFi USB before and typically it works ootb.  I have a Dell latitude D630 whose HDD died so I substituted an HD from another laptop that wasn't working (for other unknown reasons).  The replacement HDD had Win 8 on it and had a password set by the person using it 18 months ago before the laptop died thus I was not able to test run the WiFi before switching to LL... Sad

All is fine with LL 3.8 with the exception of the Wifi.  In the past once I connected using ethernet and done updates and drivers I've been "golden" with either having WiFi or when I've had to resort to the WiFi USB it has worked ootb without doing anything.

I have tried setting the driver to the Broadcom Linux one (did not resolve the WiFi problem) and also changed it back and still no WiFi.  I did go into BIOS and check that all the WiFi "stuff" was enabled.

I also put in the small disk that comes with the Panda USB and clicked on the Linux instructions.  It gives a bunch of lines I could put into a terminal box, however it says for fedora so I was hesitant to do this.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?  I'd like to try to get it working such that I can place it with a youth when school re-starts in January.

[Sort of SOLVED] Can't see my book marked items
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 11-26-2018, 12:23 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

Hoping someone can help me out.  I had book marked a whole bunch of previous posts for reference and now when I log in to the forum and click on bookmarks I cannot see any of them.  I even book marked a new item and although it says it was book marked successfully, I cannot find/see it.

Did something change?
Thanks in advance.

  Redshift error [geoclue2]

Redshift has a problem setting up details from geoclue2, making it nonfunctional. What could be the deal? The problem started to occur since my reinstall of LinuxLite4.2.
