3Gig of RAM is plenty for an LL4 virtual OS. Should run just fine. SSH is not a resource drain on your server and you should consider it especially for LAN ethernet connections. If the client is Windows you just need an Xming server display to run a virtual Linux OS from qemu/kvm or gnome-boxes. Right now you're using RDP to connect which basically doubles the resource tax split between the client and host and can actually cause database slow writes in some applications which can lead to errors in the virtual OS. No matter how you do it, whatever protocol you use, the thing that gives you speed is putting the computation load on the host not the client. You can run single applications, not the whole OS with SSH X11 forwarding if the host has an installed DE and perhaps not even need a virtualized OS on the host. It's good that you're thinking about your setup and better ways to utilize your server. With Windows people generally tend to accept success as a setup that works. Linux people tend to not be satisfied until a setup is tweaked to fit their specific needs most efficiently. Best of luck to you and I hope you continue to enjoy and experiment with Linux Lite.

First off, don't hate me for being frugal with my hardware - and thanks for the links!.  :-)

Host box is maxed out with 8G RAM, however it's also my home NAS so I don't want to starve that functionality, hence the 3G to my LL guest VM.

I'm using xrdp due to a combination of finding it performs better (for me) than VNC as well as my connection source machines (often Windows based) not always allowing VNC installations,  But they  pretty much always have a Remote Desktop client.  Think school / library / internet cafe machines.

The idea of thin clients is nice and I'll need to read more closely about gnome-boxes, but that seesm to need the client to have SSH (and potentially be running Linux) which is unfortunately something I can't rely on (yet - we'll get LL out to the world eventually!).

Love to help you, but I'm a little confused about your connection setup. RDP is a Windows protocol. Do you mean VNC or is your client a Windows machine? I'm assuming the host is not a Windows machine. Both RDP and VNC are RAM suckers on small RAM cap machines. The most efficient way is for the host to have the big RAM and the big HDD, and virt manager or gnome boxes to run the virtual OSs, then a nice little Linux Lite client can either access virt manager or gnome boxes with SSH X11 forwarding and let the bigger host machine do all the work and use the RAM. See my links on the subject:

I've been playing around with LL as a virtual machine guest for a year or so now and it occurred to me that I've never lookied into optimizing it for running in that environment (beyond installing the QEMU guest agent, with which I've had limited success).

While I'm interested in any optimization suggestions, in my case I'm using QEMU KVM (on and Unraid server) and accessing it via RDP (usually over the internet) mostly for email (Thunderbird) and web browser use (Chrome / Firefox).  Due to host hardware limitations my VM is currently only allocated 3G of memory.  :-(

If anybody has any suggestions on optimization settings for the VM or remote access, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!
