Sorry, I meant is that package installed on your system? You can verify in Synaptic or please report what the following command shows in terminal:

Code: [Select]
dpkg-query -W -f '${status} ${package} ${version}\n' | grep xfce4-power

Don't worry, we'll figure this out.

Do you have xfce4-power-manager-plugins installed?

I have 2.8 and there is no setting like that in power manager.  The audio icon wasn't on the task tray either but I found how to put it there. No such luck with the brightness.  Dan

What version of LL did you download? Was it the new beta?

You'll want to be sure that the 'Show system tray icon' is checked in the Power Manager. If it's visible in your tray then you should be able to click on it and decrease the brightness with the slider.

Like I said in an earlier reply the setting I want carries over from Mint.   The reason I 'd like it to work here is in case I decide Lite is the OS I'll use and get rid of the rest. I'll try that but I'd have to experiment with the%'s. I found this on a search but didn't know how to create that file. http://itsfoss.com/fix-brightness-ubuntu-1310/ Thank you...Dan

Very strange. While this is not optimal, you can open Terminal and enter the following:

Code: [Select]
xbacklight -set 50
This will set your screen brightness to 50%. You can of course use any percentage that you like.

Mike...Would not accept the fn key or any f key. Maybe my function keys are disabled.  I learn something new everyday :) Thank you  Dan

No worries, I made a little screencast for you.  :)

Please let me know if you have any questions. Toward the end, I simply pressed the key combination that I wanted to use. For you, just press the Fn+ F7. I'm using a Chromebook so I don't have a Fn button which is why I used my super key.

Thank you Mike but that would be beyond  my knowledge. I can follow step by step directions but I also can get lost very easily.  :(  I am looking for a end user friendly distro and I really like Lite except for this issue. Lite Tweaks is really nice. Dan

If you go into your keyboard settings in the Application Shortcuts tab, add a new shortcut with the command
Code: [Select]
xbacklight -10 and assign it to whichever keybinding you like. Do that again except change the minus symbol to a plus (+) and assign it to another keybinding. You can change the 10 to a lower/higher number if you want to change the speed at which it changes.

That did not work. Must be a Lite bug because the fn key plus f7 or f8 to higher or lower the brightness level works fine on LXLE,Peppermint,Mint Mate,Mint Xfce and Windows Vista. Dan

Yes, on most laptops you will have what looks something like a *(small) and *(Large) on usually 2 of the FN(Function) keys.
These allow you to turn the brightness Up and Down.
Sometimes you press the keys by themselves, or sometimes FN+ plus one of the keys.

I never knew you could dim the display on a laptop.  Never tried it on mine.
