Release Announcements / Linux Lite 5.6 Final Released
« on: August 31, 2021, 06:44:01 AM »
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 5.6 Final is now available for download and installation. This release includes updates to the Help Manual - our extensive, easy to follow Linux Lite guide, you can now install Linux Lite directly from Lite Welcome, an updated Papirus icon theme, 2 new features added to Lite Tweaks, the introduction of the 'Pay what You Want' digital download model, 7 new wallpapers, Python default version now set to Python3, and a host of bug fixes and enhancements for our target audience. If you're coming from Windows, you'll find this to be a solid, stable release that will help make your transition to a linux based operating system, user friendly.

Changes:

You can now install Linux Lite directly from Lite Welcome:

Updated Papirus icon theme:

7 new Wallpapers of which 4 are from our resident artist @whateverthing

Lite Tweaks now has complete Brave Browser Support for cleaning the cache and setting as the default web browser.
We've also added the ability to edit the Grub Menu to display the correct naming entry - Linux Lite (only works if Linux Lite controls Grub).

Pay What You Want

This is a road I'd never thought I'd go down, but we have no choice. Either we stagnate and accept the big G's ever changing algorithms, or we boldly go where others have dared.

I'm talking about the 'Pay What You Can' digital download model that has worked, and is working on other projects.

Linux Lite will always be free

Please read the entire thread here - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/on-topic/linux-lite-pay-what-you-can/

Python

Default Python version is now set to Python3.

Plus many other tweaks and changes.

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/

Details:

Kernel: 5.4.0-81 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.14 )
Firefox: 91.0.1
Thunderbird: 78.11.0
LibreOffice: 6.4.7.2
VLC: 3.0.9.2
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04.3

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - press the ESC key whilst booting in UEFI mode after your BIOS has posted. Use the SHIFT key if running Linux Lite in Legacy mode.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite' (See above for Lite Tweaks new Grub feature).

Upgrading

There has been some tweaks to the Lite Upgrade code from Series 4.x. Most notably, the end dialogue has been simplified and will ask you to either Reboot, Shutdown or View Log. Continue Working is no longer viewed as a sensible option. Also, Lite Welcome will no longer be displayed after a Reboot. Just look at Lite Widget to see if you upgraded successfully to 5.6 or do:

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/llver
in a Terminal, should return Linux Lite 5.6. Lastly, the upgrade log will now be stored in /var/log/lite-upgrade.log for those interested in the process. All of our code will function in the 'system space' and no longer in the 'user space'. Our overall improvements to Lite Upgrade should see people upgrading as quickly as ever with less bloat along with unnecessary dialogues and information.

> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates (you must reboot if asked to, otherwise continue to the next step)
> Set a Restore Point - Menu, System, Timeshift
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
> Reboot

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall lite-upgrade-series5
and, or:

Code: [Select]
rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/lite-upgrade.desktop
then try Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade again.

Having problems upgrading? First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.

Code: [Select]
apt policy lite-upgrade-series5
should return:

Code: [Select]
  Installed: 5.0-0040-linuxlite
  Candidate: 5.0-0040-linuxlite

If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Sources.

Lite Upgrade - What it will do:

- New Lite Help Manual
- New Lite Upgrade
- New Lite Welcome
- New Lite Themes
- New Lite Tweaks
- New Wallpapers
- Updated Icons

Lite Upgrade - What it won't do:

- Set Python3 to default (see below)

Manual removal of Adobe Flash:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-installer
Then perhaps use a apt-mark hold to stop it reinstalling:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold flashplugin-installer
For any help on removing/adding any of the above, please place a Post.

Set Python3 to default:

Code: [Select]
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python python /usr/bin/python3 10
There is no upgrade path to or from RC releases.
There is no upgrade path from Series 2, 3 or 4 ( 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 | 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 | 4.0, 4.2, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 ) to Series 5.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.6-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Reviewers in a VirtualBox:

Installing Updates does not function with a Live ISO. All features work as they should, once you have installed Linux Lite to hardware or a VM.
Once Linux Lite has been installed, add the following for a complete reviewing experience:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11
Don't forget the Guest Additions too!
Also, get the Extensions pack from here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

Thank you :)

On Topic / Linux Lite - Pay What You Can
« on: August 18, 2021, 08:18:21 PM »
This is a road I'd never thought I'd go down, but we have no choice. Either we stagnate and accept the big G's ever changing algorithms, or we boldly go where others have dared.

I'm talking about the 'Pay What You Can' digital download model that has worked, and is working on other projects.

3rd, and most important line in this thread...Linux Lite will always be free.

I've looked at revenue projections from other Media partners based on our unique and impression stats and they don't even come close to what Google offers so that unfortunately, is not an option.

This system is Live now and is on trial for an unspecified time. If it works, we'll leave it running, if it doesn't work, it will be axed.

Wherever you see this...

and you think...OMG, I have to pay for Linux Lite now....NO you do not. Simply input 0 into the Custom box or click the $0 amount and then you will get a Download link. End of heart attack.

So why the big scary change?

For a while now, it seems we've reached a peak point in earnings. The 'bar' has not moved for nearly a year now. That's long enough for one to react and seek out alternative means of income to get us to the ultimate goal...where I can quit my full time day job and work exclusively on Linux Lite. Imagine that, 8hrs a day dedicated purely to Linux Lite (oh I wish!).

Microsoft Windows 10 as of today will cost you $139 for Home and $199 for Pro from the MS website (19/08/21)

So what do you get for your hard earned $139?

So what are they boasting that you get...

# Fast start up - linux has that covered
# Windows Mixed Reality - I don't know anyone that uses this
# My People - I don't know anyone that uses this
# Windows Ink - I don't know anyone that uses this
# 4K gaming - linux has that covered
# Paint 3D - lol, that is all
# A reimagined Photos app - linux has that covered
# Microsoft Edge - linux has that covered, thanks Satya :)

What else are they promoting on the reasons to Buy Windows page...

Safer and more secure - only when the power is off and Wake on Lan is disabled (but then there's physical access).
More creative, more productive - Gimp, Darktable, Inkscape and more productive? Thousands of programmers who use their favorite IDE would strongly disagree.
Powerful, modern devices - 11th Gen Intel CPU? Latest nVidia GPU, linux has that covered.

Conclusion

Pay nothing or even 50c for Linux Lite and get arguably a more secure, more productive and able to work on modern machines OS solution, or pay $139 to MS for a less secure operating system that you can't make copies of and share with others.

On Topic / Should we take the elementary OS approach?
« on: August 09, 2021, 03:07:36 AM »
Google keeps changing it's advertising algorithm with the latest change hurting us the most.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads personally.

Either we seek alternative ways to keep this OS alive and on a steady growth path, or I look for something else to do with my time.

If we take the 'elementary OS' approach whereby they do this with their download link:

(you can enter 0 for the amount and still get a free download link, we would do the same)

I would look at reducing reliance on Google AdSense if this approach gave our OS a future.

This does not imply that I am thinking of leaving the project, on the contrary, I'm always looking for ways to keep it viable. Last month I was offered a 6 figure sum by a US based Acquisitions company, and I turned it down. Food for thought.

Do we give this proven approach a go?

You cannot upgrade (free) to Windows 11 (Windows 10 EOL 2025) coming out later this year unless your computer had TPM v 2.0+ (all computers before 2017)

Another win for linux, we are happy :)

TPM video, very good:

Linux Lite Software Development / Lite Core - Suggestions welcomed
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:10:35 PM »
I am seriously considering doing this. Stripped down version of Lite where the user gets to choose:

Web browser
Email client
Firewall
Office Suite
Partitioner
PDF viewer
Media player
Photo editor
Photo manager
Scan software
Back up software
etc

Base files and drivers will stay intact as per usual - to ensure wide hardware compatibility.
Start up and shutdown as you could imagine are ridiculously quick.

Should I do this? Main Linux Lite release will remain unchanged.

84
Do we need this? Other settings can be easily added to the 3 existing settings.

On Topic / Can I upgrade Linux Lite to the next Series?
« on: April 12, 2021, 10:58:29 PM »
This is a question that gets asked every now and then, so I thought it was time to have something in writing to clear this up.

As of this post, there is no software from us to upgrade you from one Series of LL to the next.

So can it be done?

It's linux and free software, so most things are possible. Theoretically, you could just change the sources in your /etc/apt/sources.list file from eg. focal (20.04) to jammy (22.04), run Install Updates and wammo, you're running the latest Ubuntu base.

So from:

Code: [Select]

Will this method go smoothly?

Don't just assume that it will. You may have PPA's that don't have a jammy repo yet, LL's custom software is ONLY written for the current release (makes sense right). There are 1000's of computers out there with just as many unique configurations. It is unrealistic and unfair to expect LL to support every unique configuration in existence in order to guarantee a perfect Series to Series upgrade.

In a test of a fresh LL 5.4 install, I ran updates, rebooted, then changed my sources from focal to jammy and it went smoothly. Or so it seemed.

Installing jammy (Ubuntu 22.04) via Install Updates on a freshly installed and updated 5.4:

(picture out-dated 12/06/22)

Success?!?

After reboot:

Can I choose any future version of an Ubuntu base, or do I have to stick with LTS?

You can choose any future version. DO NOT attempt an earlier version. Bad, bad news.

What's the best way to test this?

Duplicate your set up exactly as it is in a VM, then test the upgrade process. Just keep in mind this will not necessarily and accurately reflect in the same hardware outcomes as a VM is mostly simulated hardware, and not passthrough (although eg nVidia now allows passthrough).

We're not going to support this because of the ungodly amount of extra support it will create, and this community is nicely balanced at the moment. We can't stop you from trying, it is after all free software, we're just not going to support every single error as a result of this unpredictable procedure.

So when someone asks now, "Can I upgrade my Linux Lite from one Series to the next?" Simply reply, "Yes, but it is not supported, and here is a thread explaining why."

This is best attempted on a fresh install after the first run of Install Updates. Any later, and that's where the complications will arise.

Will we one day support it?  That depends on how our base (Ubuntu) evolves. Never say never, right?

Details:

Kernel: 5.4.0-70 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.11 )
Firefox: 87.0
Thunderbird: 78.7.1
LibreOffice: 6.4.6.2
VLC: 3.0.9.2
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04.2

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - holding shift down whilst booting in UEFI mode does not bring up the Grub menu (works in Legacy mode), waiting for Ubuntu fix.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite':

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

You tell me.

Just look at Lite Widget to see if you upgraded successfully to 5.4 or do:

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/llver
in a Terminal, should return Linux Lite 5.4. Lastly, the upgrade log will now be stored in /var/log/lite-upgrade.log for those interested in the process. All of our code will function in the 'system space' and no longer in the 'user space'. Our overall improvements to Lite Upgrade should see people upgrading as quickly as ever with less bloat along with unnecessary dialogues and information.

> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates (you must reboot if asked to, otherwise continue to the next step)
> Set a Restore Point - Menu, System, Timeshift
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
> Reboot

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall lite-upgrade-series5
and, or:

Code: [Select]
rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/lite-upgrade.desktop
then try Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade again.

Having problems upgrading? First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.

Code: [Select]
apt policy lite-upgrade-series5
should return:

Code: [Select]
  Installed: 5.0-0030-linuxlite
  Candidate: 5.0-0030-linuxlite

If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Sources.

Lite Upgrade - What it will do:

- New Lite Help Manual
- New Lite Upgrade
- New Lite Welcome
- New Lite Themes
- New Wallpapers
- Add hashalot, a program for giving sha256 sum output

Lite Upgrade - What it won't do:

- nothing to exclude

Manual removal of Adobe Flash:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-installer
Then perhaps use a apt-mark hold to stop it reinstalling:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold flashplugin-installer
For any help on removing/adding any of the above, please place a Post.

There is no upgrade path to or from RC releases.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.4-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.

1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+

On Topic / Linux Lite Series 3.x End of Life 1st April 2021
« on: March 22, 2021, 07:04:43 PM »
Linux Lite Series 3.x including the following releases - 3.0 3.2 3.4 3.6 and 3.8 as of April 1st 2021, will no longer be supported in any way.

That means no updates, no bug fixes for Linux Lite created software, no patches, no new software.

This also marks the end of 32bit Kernel builds.

If you are currently running a release from Series 3.x you have 2 choices. Run it without a network connection (turn your pc off when you are not infront of it), move to a higher Series (highly recommended). Anyone with physical access to your pc running Series 3.x can take advantage of ongoing unfixed bugs and security holes. Make sure your password is unhackable (18+ characters, upper, lower case, alphanumeric).

Make the sensible choice, move on to a higher Series before 1st April 2021.

If you are unsure if your hardware will run on Series 4.x or 5.x check your if hardware is listed here first - https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.php
