@Jerry
Success!
Problem solved finally on the 4th fresh install of LL3.0.  For the record I will explain how I installed nvidia optimus so that it may help others.

In the LL Help Manual (under Video Drivers --> Graphics NVIDIA Optimus) it shows two lines of code to enter in the terminal, following a fresh install.  I emphasize here that this should be done  FIRST before anything else, following the fresh install.

The error I made was that I started with LL updates first, once I'd done a fresh install, instead of starting with the install of nvidia optimus. I think this point needs to be made much clearer in the Help Manual. So finally, these were the steps that worked:

1. Make a fresh clean install of LL3.0 (make sure the install takes up the whole of the drive - i.e. don't leave any unallocated space - don't know whether this point is strictly necessary but it is what I did, e.g. 40GB for '/', the remainder of the drive used for '/home')
2. Reboot
3. Install nvidia optimus (according to Help Manual)
4. Update kernel to latest version, currently 4.4.0-36-generic (using sudo apt-get install linux-generic)
5. Install LL Updates (from Menu)
6. Then other stuff, e.g. Lite Software, etc, etc...

I hope you got some sleep last night - I notice it was half-past-midnight when you last replied to me!
Thanks
Mike

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

The above is a further clean reinstall, but I think I will do another clean install, reformatting the SSD, as the nvidia install seems  be completely blocked.

Before installing nvidia 361 do I need to remove the X.orgX server -- Nouveau display driver?

Scrolling back through the terminal output, I notice that I did not run sudo apt autoremove, as instructed in the terminal output, to remove packages efibootmgr, libefivar0 and libpango1.0-0.  I don't know whether my omission here had any bearing on the installation getting stuck...?

Okay, I'll try again, using nvidia optimus on a fresh LL3.0 install..  If this fails I'll probably return to LL2.8

You've probably got a mess onboard with all the drivers you've tried. Format and reinstall if it's not an issue.

The nvidia-361 installation is still stuck on that last line as reported in my last message.  I'm loathe to interrupt the process as I will merely get the following request from the terminal output to run the following and that doesn't seem to work, as I found out from a previous install of LL3.0:

Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
...understandably, I'm beginning to pull my hair out - can't remember having this problem in LL2.8  :-[

I've done what you mentioned above - the terminal's cursor has been blinking for the last half-hour on the last line of the following output from terminal  i.e.  "Building initial module for 4.4.0-36-generic."
How long does it take for the process to reach completion?

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

You have Optimus graphics. You need to install the Optimus drivers, not the drivers from the Menu. Help Manual > Video Drivers > Graphics - NVIDIA Optimus
Thanks for pointing this out Jerry.
What in the inxi -G output indicates it is Optimus graphics? (I'm learning all the time here...)
Even though I made the error in installing nvidia-340 (proprietary) from the Install Drivers GUI, can I now just run sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime nvidia-361-updates nvidia-settings in the terminal and go back and delete nvidia-340 driver afterwards using the terminal or synaptic?

What is the output of:
Code: [Select]
inxi -G
I reinstalled LL3.0 on another SSD, as I was unable to access any updates due to the nvidia-361 failure to install and blocking any updating.
With this fresh install, instead of going for the first listed option of nvidia-361 (proprietary, tested) in the Install Drivers, which 'froze' up the system, I chose the second option, nvidia-340 (proprietary), hence its appearance in last line of the inxi -G output below.  The nvidia website lists nvidia-340 as being used for older nvidia cards, e.g. the nvidia-200 series, and it lists linux drivers up to the 370 series for GTX 870M, so am confused why 361 wont install.

Code: [Select]
Graphics:  Card-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
           Card-2: NVIDIA GK104M [GeForce GTX 870M]
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.3 driver: nvidia
           Resolution: [email protected]
           GLX Renderer: GeForce GTX 870M/PCIe/SSE2
           GLX Version: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 340.96

Thanks Jerry.

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

That depends on what video card you have. Remember when requesting support to include all the relevant details. Thank you.

I've made three unsuccessful attempts to install the driver nvidia-361.42 in Linux 3.0 from the Install Drivers GUI.  It just occurred to me that nvidia-361 might not be compatible with the kernel 4.4.0-34-generic which is in LL3.0 - is this the case?

If there is an incompatibility issue, could someone tell  me which nvidia drivers are compatible with this kernel.

Many thanks
Mike
