Just an idea since I don't know how to manage multiple video cards in a laptop on Linux...
could it be that the problem is related to the output using the intel graphic chipset and not the nVidia?

I was thinking the same. I am not sure how graphics is being handled in linux. I remember there was a specific driver Bumblebee that handled the laptops. Not sure it is still supported.

I installed the 390 driver rebooted but made no difference. I input: xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 120.00  but it does nothing :(

Looks like you might be using the wrong driver. Not sure why you selected the 'Server' driver. Choose the 390 driver, then reboot and try my command again.

Sorry, I forgot :)

It did not work. It did nothing. The screen should have flickered when refresh rate changes but did not.

If I create a new mod and trying to add it I have this:

xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode 1920x1080_120.00
xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed

You haven't mentioned whether or not the code worked.

I am currently using this one:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AeSSDC0ij0XEk5iHLY1sz-Wio5Ij-RxG/view?usp=sharing

I have also tried the top one nvidia-driver-460 tested but same thing.
Or should I try install drivers from terminal instead?

xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 120.00
Please show us the nVidia driver you are using.

Hi All,

Almost finished tweaking my new install. Coming from Win10.
I had screen tearing with Nvidia driver that I finally managed to solve but I could not get my monitor working 120Hz with HDMI. It worked under Windows and my monitor support 144Hz max. I know 144Hz only works with display port. Tried with Nouveau driver as well but same, only 60Hz is available. My laptop is an MSI CX62-2QD with Nvidia 940M
My Nvidia setting panel is looking a bit weird, I think a lot of things are missing from it eg. resolution setting, refresh rate setting...

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HwbZK_Rixwt9TvOBpuybjg90czXicsCr/view?usp=sharing

I tried to add custom refresh rates with xrandr but I could only manage to set it to 75Hz
