Just a hint to help others. I had a problem with the HDMI cable ver.1.4 and replaced it with version 2.1, as the bandwidth of  old cable was not enough. Then Had to adjust the resolution on TV down from 1920 to 1028 to match video card. My 55 in TV is working with the PC now with a 9200 ATI video card on HDMI 2.1 version cable.

my problem is solved, broken cable :(

Errr.. huh? Not sure if you're suggesting the cable as the issue for me, it's not. Cable works fine.

So not sure if this is the right category, but I have HP laptop, AMD GPU, AMD CPU, HP 17-ak001ds . I've connected my TV to the HDMI out on the laptop, but can't get LL to recognize it.
Linux Lite 4.0 (GNU/Linux 4.15.0-36-generic x86_64)

Any suggestions on what to try?

Thanks :)

What is the output of the command? :

Code: [Select]
sudo grep HDMI /boot/config-$(uname -r)

And it randomly started working.... That's odd.

To clarify - the Acer, sound. Still nothing on the HP, but I think I'll give up on that one. :(

My old  AMD Toshi laptop running on kernel 4.13 with Ubuntu 16.04 actually runs perfectly with HDMI. Watch Netflix, MLB network etc. No issues once Firefox is configured for it. Might be the ticket for you. It does show both interfaces correctly i/e onboard/TV in the settings as well, and it dual boots UEFI with Windows 10 so I'm not likely to change it anytime soon. I am skeptical though, that Ubuntu 18.04 with the newest kernel wouldn't work as well. Users tend to jump ship pretty quickly sometimes, perhaps during upgrades not noting changes to video and/or sound card drivers, etc. Drivers can be reverted after upgrades done properly. Part of the problem is there is no upgrade path between LL 3.x and LL 4.x even though there is between Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04.
*By the way the TV remote control should still control the volume.

Ok, so .. I have LinuxLite on two laptops. I think the HP is hopeless for this, LOL.. Other laptop is a Acer Aspire Timeline. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Aspire_Timeline  Yeah, I know, old laptop, but it's lightweight and basically brand new, was sitting in a box for a while LOL. So, it runs fine, no need for nomodeset on it. I get HDMI out, but not getting any audio on the HDMI out. Went to audio out, and tried all the output settings, dolby 5.1, 7.1, etc. No go. Should that work? Outputting HDMI to my TV? I do get video, just no sound. Yes, I get sound via the pc speakers when I select PC audio out...

No additional drivers available :( NOt sure what you mean not use?

If addition drivers are available - I think there is an option to not use or not use proprietary or some phrasing - I'm not on my LL box..

What has been the results of different kernels (not drivers)?
- Some work better than others depending on the hardware...

I would try 4.10 and may be even 4.4 (LL3.x ran with this kernel) which is what I run on my mini.

If you've looked through https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1761751 they're are folks that say 4.13 and older have worked.. Or with Kernel options similar as amdgpu.cik_support=1 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.dc=0

Also may want to look here: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-latest-amd-radeon-drivers-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux
You'll want to ensure there is an Ubuntu 18.04 version..

What version of AMD Radeon are you running may aide with others chiming in...

Same no output with different kernels??

Have you checked "Update Drivers" to see if any additional drivers available - or trying "not use"..??..

Some additional thoughts...

Looks like a common occurrence..
May want to a different kernel.. Perhaps 4.13?? See last link...

Lite Tweaks > Kernel Installer, you may have to choose at boot - from Grub choose advanced options select 4.13 continue boot... Test... If no difference can try others, to go back to 4.15 -- from Grub choose advanced options select 4.15

Lots of 18.04 and HDMI

https://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+18.04+hdmi+not+working&rlz=1C1CHZL_enUS719US719&oq=ubuntu+18.04+hdmi+&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0l5.15677j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

And
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1761751

I did a fresh install. It was a pretty new install, so this was easier. But back to no HDMI with nomodeset :(

Have you tried removing nomodeset and removing the hdmi cable from the hdmi port, booting the computer, to the desktop then putting the hdmi cable in to the port ?
So the graphics driver loads fully first.

Yeah, without nomodeset I wouldn't get a desktop.. Now with nomodeset, I get actually the black screen with the feather background - nothing past that. No HDMI cable in
