OK looks like it is finally stable.

I this find this a while back, so maybe S3/Openchrome is not dead yet.

Thank for all your help. This has been frustrating me for many months.

Cool Beans Bro. Hope it works for you. On our site. Sis and Savage chips still require running vesa on older rare gear. The newer xorg just freezes the desktop when running the Sis or Savage driver supplied by gnu/linux.

What it amounts to is. One hand is not aware of what the other hand is doing or needs. So the user suffers a bit.
Good thing there are guys like us lighting the way for everyone else.

When I googled openchrome. The documentation was old and applied to ubuntu variations like ubuntu 8.10 and such.

Even Debian search by me only turned up stuff for 2013 or so.

Maybe someone here with better skillz than me can pick up the load in this thread also.

;D I think I've got it. Needed to change the Bus ID on line 97 as well.

I am running a soundcloud app in firefox now to see if it is stable.

This has been an all day learning experience, but now I have a little bit more linux knowledge. I am really dangerous now

Thank you for all your help. I will mark solved if no crashes.

Looks like I am in way over my head. I tried editing my new xorg.conf (your's) file with your first paste bin file.

Just got system back to where it's running again. ::)

I don't understand why the unedited xorg.conf file will not load the vesa  driver. It just unloads openchrome and instead loads fbdev.

A new video card is several paychecks away for me, so I really would like to make this work.

BTW your work stand is very cool. Repurposing what you have laying around equals "Dollars Earned".

Thanks again.

I don't know why that 1st link says paste removed. Lets try this again.

http://pastebin.com/wxYu9cPz

I double checked and my link took me there. But I am logged into pastebin. Which I am a free member of. Means I have the free account.

I keep conky text files I make and other stuff I might need online. I am a old dog that suffers from CRS (can't remember stuff)

Try that one. Rename the one you just made to xorg.conf.old. Lets teach you another trick.

Code: [Select]
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
which will make a exact copy of your xorg.conf you made and all you are doing is saying copy my document I just made and rename it to old on the the end.

You can use the cd and ls commands I showed you earlier to do a look see when done to see if it worked or not.

Then you can edit the xorg.conf left in place to what ever you want. The one named old won't interact with your screen anymore. It is just a backup now.

Off topic now.

Came out as good as it did.

Made the xorg.conf file with your suggested changes. It now loads the fbdev but not the vesa and openchrome drivers.

I feel I am heading in the right direction but just don't know enough to get there. Still crashes when using firefox.

Graphics:  Card: VIA K8M890CE/K8N890CE [Chrome 9] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 1106:3230

GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.4, 128 bits) GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.1.3 Direct Rendering: Yes

Thanks again for the help.

Good call on no xorg.conf file.

I am an old dog learning new tricks. I will try to make said file using your's with your suggested changes.

Your first paste bin was empty but second one has the file.

Let's see how bad I can Bork my system.

Thanks again for your assistance.

I forgot to mention. If you use my personal vesa xorg.conf for my 23 inch monitor. You will need to change

Code: [Select]
BusID       "PCI:0:13:0"

on line 82 & 111  in quotes to your PCI Bus ID name/number string. Which should be the 1st numbers spit out from doing a

Code: [Select]
lspci |grep VGA
$ lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 <<<<<<-------------<<<<<<<VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
^ up there.

Complicated I know. But custom edits require flexibility in your way at doing things. There might be a easier way that I do not know about.

You probably do not have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file made. You can find out by opening a terminal and looking into that like this.

Code: [Select]
cd /etc/X11
then hit enter and the prompt $ should be preceded by (looks like this)

Code: [Select]
/etc/X11 $
Now do a look see around with

Code: [Select]
ls
hit enter key . See if a xorg.conf exists. If it does not. Might as well make one. Then put this in it. Then reboot. Then run Inxi -Fxx and see if vesa is now being used.

Code: [Select]
Section "Device" Identifier    "Configured Video Device" Driver        "vesa" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier    "Configured Monitor" HorizSync 42.0 - 52.0 VertRefresh 55.0 - 65.0 Modeline "1024x768" 60.80  1024 1056 1128 1272   768  768  770  796 Modeline "800x600" 38.21 800 832 976 1008 600 612 618 631 Modeline "640x480" 24.11 640 672 760 792 480 490 495 50 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier    "Default Screen" Monitor        "Configured Monitor" Device        "Configured Video Device" DefaultDepth    24 Subsection "Display" Depth       24 Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection EndSection
Edit ; I did not like the way the code tags here on this site made my post look above. So I am making another pastebin text to show how text file should look.

http://pastebin.com/wxYu9cPzi >>>>>>Edit: Bad link. Good link below

http://pastebin.com/wxYu9cPz

I am only going up to 1024x768 as the max since you show 800x600 in your inxi report as what you are running for screen resolution. Add larger
screen resolutions in the mode line if you need them instead. Hopefully I am right. I mention all of this because my Sis and Savage graphics machines all need to rock and roll with vesa instead of Sis and Savage drivers because of problems with newer xorg versions and kernel versions.

I am just blindly poking and hoping that you are maybe suffering from openchrome and newer xorg versions and kernel versions like I do with Sis and Savage graphics chips. I can be wrong though. Won't be the first time. Or the last.  ;)

One of my saved working  vesa /etc/X11/xorg.conf I keep at pastebin for one of my machines (23 inch LCD monitor).

You are welcome to use it also. If it does not work. Rename it as xorg.conf.broken or just delete it I guess. Different distro than Ubuntu or LL. Different machine also. So your mileage may vary from mine.

Have you tried using the generic vesa driver instead?

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fxx
from terminal will help your cause in this thread also since it will describe your hardware.

Howdy all:

I have an MSI Motherboard with VIA K8T890/K8M890 & VIA ®
®
VT8237R / VT8237R chips.

My problem is when using any browser my screen will go all white after a bit and will not respond to any commands. I have to do a hard shut down after it does this.

This is not a Linux Lite only problem as it also happens with Mint. I have tried all versions of LL but all have the same problem. The computer is duel boot XP which runs fine.

I had an NVIDIA GT610 card that worded fine but had to put it in another computer.

This has been an ongoing problem since LL 1.0.8 now using LL 2.4 Just love it and want to simply make it work.

Thanks.
Robert
