Yes, I have seen the nomodeset, I will try it when I get his NUC next week.
I guess that is modifying/editing the grub parameters during bootup.

The Interesting one is the Linux Mint 17.2, because that uses kernel 3.16

Yes Ubuntu use Intel Official drivers, but there is always a delay.
You can get Intel Drivers direct from Intel site if you want.

It seems unless you start adding PPA's then you don't get everything you need unless you stop using LTS
14.04.3 gives the Kernel 3.10 , But you need 15.10 to get all drivers also..

I guess this is where you have to make a decision..??
You stay with known/hardware and stability with LTS
and try to "patch" for New Hardware if possible.
or
to keep up with Latest New Hardware, don't use LTS

3.10? Did you mean 3.19?

I've found that Intel HD 6000 works well even on 15.04. This GPU was released in September 2014 according to some websites. Some says January 2015, so It would be a shame if it didn't work on 15.04, or the last 14.04.3.

15.04 doesn't have i965-va-driver  version 1.6.0. but according to people, it works.

You could try this "nomodeset" command, it should let you install the system on kernel 3.13. People use that to install systems with new unsupported GPUs. Then install new kernel and drivers and reboot without nomodeset

Or try 15.10, it's the only Ubuntu that ships with i965-va-driver 1.6.0.

Hopefully, Ubuntu 14.04.04 will come out soon with this driver version.

Btw, the Intel drivers in Ubuntu are official drivers from Intel, right?

I never had an Intel GPU, but I know their official drivers are free (as in freedom), or at least open-source. I don't know why OIBAF doesn't provide this driver in his PPA.

I use OIBAF's PPA by myself.

He recommends installing "mesa-vdpau-drivers", but I don't know why. I didn't notice any performance improvement on my ATI r300 card.

I guess it's only for video performance (movies), not video performance as video games for example, but I don't know. You will know better I believe. Just to let you know.

I'll get my next laptop with Intel GPU I guess Since they provide official free / open-source drivers.

I need to get the NUC of my friend.

When I googled with various combinations of "NUC5i5RYH Ubuntu 14.04 HD6000" I found references to 14.04.3 and kernel 3.19


I will probably test first with an Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS Live USB stick, If that works,
I will build a Live LL 2.6 from a VBox install updated with Kernel 3.19

      - a kernel which is at least 3.19 (for instance linux-image-generic-lts-vivid from trusty-updates)

      - package i965-va-driver (currently rev 1.6.0-pre1-1~trusty) from Wolfgang Schupp PPA (ppa:wsnipex/vaapi Trusty)

There is no particular problem (no kernel/xserver freeze anb no green / pink glitchy stuff in VLC) except that the display of heavily loaded pages by chromium may be a little chopped.

Anyway, how do you know you need kernel 3.19? I was looking for a graphics card kernel requirements, but never found any.

For example kernel version 4.something is supposed to bring support for new AMD GPUs, but I have never found any official changelog or support list.

GPU manufactures don't say which kernel I need for particular GPU, can't find anything on internet too.

How old is Intel HD 6000?

You are creating a live ISO, partitions are irrelevant.

then I started to get confused over how I would tell systemback which disks to use.?
If it was a single disk, no special partitioning, it seems straightforward.
But
In the NUC there is an M2 SSD planned for partitions / and /swap
There is also 1TB HD and he wants /home /documents /media

I guess I could manually create 2 disks(vdi) in VBox, install and then Image.
Assuming systemback, see's both disks/partitions

Install LL onto another PC or VB, install a later kernel, make a custom ISO with Systemback.

Hi,

I've been trying to install LL on a friends New "Rock Canyon" version of an Intel NUC.
This version contain Intel HD6000 graphics,
The older "Maple Canyon" version was Intel HD5500 and apperently worked.

When you boot the NUC the grub screen appears,
then when the installer starts it is all corrupted and unusable.
Support for Intel HD6000 was added in kernel 3.19

I know you can "update" LL kernel, when it's installed, But I can't install it.

So a "Catch 22",
how to get kernel 3.19 into a version of LL to install from..??
Any ideas/suggestion welcome.
