When I set up Vb with LL3.2 will it need the same done for graphics stack and kernel, or will it use them  from the main LL 3.2 OS install, or maybe the graphics but I'll need to upgrade the kernel ?

I won't be doing it just yet I need to absorb things, I'll start following the tutorial in manual for setting up VB maybe next week.

Thank you firenice03, and torreydale :)

I have followed this so far, bookmarked the thread, and following the Help Manual Tutorial made a systemback restore point, I have done an iso back up, I have written notes.
I've learned to do so many things during the process.

This is marked as solved.  That's good.  Create a restore point, and maybe even a Live ISO of your installation as a fallback.  You can find out how to do that (using Systemback) in the Tutorials section of the Help Manual.

I am confused, though.  What exactly was the solution?

I have installed the Intel stack for Linux 1.0.4 like you said in earlier post, it said it was already installed, so I chose the option to remove and reinstall it like torreydale had told me to try with xorg as this can sometimes help.
I then have edited the grub how LL-user showed me, and removed nomodeset, now a driver is installed, so it looks for it.

It has worked, desktop looks great (like it usually should), I have played 1 video on YouTube, it plays correctly no issues.

The 1.0.4 it says has very recently been improved, in February 2017 by 1.0.5 with bug fixes , which were on the link you posted above.
I haven't experienced any bugs yet, I am thinking with the latest kernel the 1.0.5 may be matched better ?
If so I am unsure if I need to uninstall 1.0.4 first or if adding 1.0.5 does this ?
I cannot get the 1.0.5 download page to work at the moment its 404 error.

Still looking  >:(
But did find this little gem - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=intel-skl-prelim-support
Should work with any kernel.. Its modding the grub as you did with nomodeset.. But using
Code: [Select]
i915.preliminary_hw_support=1
Give the link a read thru - sounds like the issue with low resolution..

**Update **
Did find a bit more simplified instruction for the Intel graphics Installer; https://allanbogh.com/2016/01/05/ubuntu-16-04-installing-the-intel-graphics-drivers-using-the-intel-graphics-installer-for-linux/

Graphics bit worse, as desktop shakes tiny bit on new kernel, it's fast but visible. Still only 640 x480 pixels available.

firenice03 - yes I used the link you supplied, and made a second restore point before restarting.
It rebooted to the desktop fine, few lines of errors.
It is very fast indeed in use, mouse pointer, menus, terminal and gui opening.
There are no options in additional drivers for video drivers.
How about the default set up - any better with the newer kernel?

For kernel updates - assuming you used the link I supplied - Jerry states to ignore any errors.
So I would go with the default - which I believe is the same I chose when I updated...  ;D

*** Update *** Oh you original kernel will be "saved" should 4.9 not boot, choosing advanced from grub will give you kernel options to boot from...

firenice03 - I have installed the 4.9.0 kernel, it has popped up a window with options menu (manually typed in thread by flicking between pcs using kvm, if any typos).

A new version (/etc/kernel-image.conf.ucf-new) of configuration file /etc/kernel-image.conf is available, but the version installed currently has been locally modified.

What do you want to do about modified configuration file kernel-image.conf ?

install the package maintainer's version
keep the local version currently installed (this one is highlighted by default)
show the differences between the versions
show a side-by-side difference between the versions
start a new shell to examine the situation

Ok

I am unsure should I install the package maintainers versions, or keep the nomodeset edit that got me to the desktop in current kernel ?

The .iso should be ok = typically I make a restore point, the "Create New" button under point operations, which will add an entry under Restore Points - which checking a restore point and clicking System Restore wil easily revert.

For the which to use.. Its a dice roll... The link you gave for the graphics installer is listed for 15.10, LL is 16.04... Me personally - I would go with a newer kernel to confirm any change then maybe the installer...
The newer kernels may have positive results overall for a system like yours running newer hardware...

If using the restore points.. You can make 1 now for a base, another after updating kernel - if positive results then try the installer - as now you have 2 points to restore to...

torreydale - I have made a systemback restore point, first time I've used that.
I have completely removed it , rebooted and reinstalled it, the output is the same.

firenice03 - I have made a Systemback backup, I think, followed Jerry's guide for doing the LL iso to usb, changing the filename to the iso, and the drive as instructed, I haven't burned any discs, or burned iso to usb on Linux before, it says success and 1.5GB, ejected the usb.

I received links from the Ubuntu Team member today, and the Ubuntu Admin yesterday, one of the links says it was solved using this
, the link that had this driver link looks a really complicated process, also it was a grouping of many results on the same page of many different methods, several successful, several not, so its confusing me which is part of which method, as the discussion goes back and forth on the several methods.
Would it be worth trying to install this .deb and where, or will the newer kernel already have this, and its a better to try the newer kernel instead ?

Shall I add the links they gave me to the thread as you, torreydale, and others, will have a better understanding of what you are reading , and may be able to know what is the best order to try things, such as kernel update, drivers grub edits ?

I was looking at https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2307528 and was thinking..
Perhaps trying a newer kernel?
I think LL3.2 default is 4.3 with 4.9 being available.. Instruction here: https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-software/linux-lite-kernel/240/

LL3.2 will update kernel with updates but if I recall correctly only incremental for the series.. 4.4.x  4.4.1 to 4.4.25 etc...
- Its a thought  ;)

Make a SystemBack back up you can revert back easily should something unexpected occur...

**** Torreydale and I were posting simultaneously, you may want to try his 1st...  ;D

So you have the driver installed, but it isn't showing up on the configuration line of your output.  I'm stumped, and it appears the developers will be busy right now working on the beta for Linux Lite 3.4.  Perhaps others will chime in.  In the meantime, this link might lead to something.  In it, it appears that user's problem was acpi:off related.

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+question/217784

Make sure you have recent Systemback restore points, just in case.

One other thing, since the driver's not showing up as part of the configuration, I wonder what would happen if you just uninstalled it (maybe choosing the Completely Remove option), rebooted, and reinstalled it.
