I installed LL2.8 64 bits and I used the answer Misko gave and now have the resolution set to 1280x768 in this topic

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/video-cards/sis-graphic-card-support-(771671-pcie-vga)/

Looks like all is just working a bit smoother now, scrolling webpages is smoother now. Going to leave it for now and start saving for a new laptop.

Hi

The lspci -vvv is not showing what kernel module you are using....did you forget to show it?

Leaping ahead...your xorg is using sismedia but I don't see that in your lsmod output. I am still not a sis expert but maybe you can try each in turn of the sis ones to see if they fix your stutter etc

Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep sis*
the other page that gave you originally the sismedia as the string to choose....
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sis

did you actually move the module into the driver folder ?

I will show mine and then make some comments

Code: [Select]
ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
# aus9 results
fbdev_drv.so  intel_drv.so  modesetting_drv.so  vesa_drv.so

so it appears I won't be able to use sismedia as no driver is there.  Got it?
Good Luck

can you link to the page you found your video card specifications please?

Can you show your full output to the lsmod command and just your VGA section for the lspci -vvv as well please?
Code: [Select]
lsmod

lspci -vvv
[/lsmod]

sorry about the late reaction. MIssed your post.

The screen resolution is ok, but scrolling websites isnt that good, its stuttering like mad.
but it has to do for now, no idea how to get that fixed and a new or second hand laptop is an illusion for the next year.

Laptop has only 2gb memory, i tried the 4gb of old laptop..same memory but bios only sees 2gb

thankyou and I hope your solution helps others.

I forgot to ask, and its low priority as you already have shown links and configs but if you have time can you now show the new result for

Code: [Select]
inxi -Gxx

thanks ....I suspect inxi won't detect 671 so is likely to still show 2 chipsets but your driver should show up different.

Code: [Select]
Graphics:  Card: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 771/671 PCIE VGA Display Adapter
           bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 1039:6351
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.3 driver: N/A
           Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 128 bits)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.0 Direct Rendering: Yes

glad you are in different time zone and seemed to have it sorted already.

If you agree just mark your post as solved. And to help others can you post the entire contents of your xorg.conf in a code box in case its long so it can be scrolled?

I am guessing you have this entry?
Driver      "sisimedia"
Good Luck

Did some more searching and found this site. http://axebase.net/blog/2014/08/23/sis-671-in-lubuntu-14-04xorg-1-15/

I used the option for lubuntu 16.04 and it worked. Now got 1280x800 as one of the options, was selected as default after reboot.

Tried the solution in https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sis but didnt work, only had default option after rebooting and think that was 600x400. So restored the backuped file and rebooted. Now i have all back as it was before.
