There is a good guide to installation in the help manual. If you've already got as far as a working bootable live media,  scroll down to 'Preparing your Computer for the Installation' and read from there.

I am 100% new to linux and am trying to install the OS for the first time in my laptop.

aruninaction - I've split your topic off and given it a new title.

Have you actually installed Linux Lite onto to your system hard disk ?

This error message can occur if you have booted a live media session and try to do an update while running from live media.
A live session is usually for evaluating the OS prior to installing it.
