A typical liveusb cannot be updated, hence the cdrom errors you see. Also as it's a live environment any system changes or installed software will be removed at next boot.

If you really want a USB OS, you want to looks at live with persistence, being portable, or you can install to usb. But know usb storage isn't the fastest media.

I have had good results with sd cards if your system supports it.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I used the Rufus utility to burn the Linux Lite ISO to a USB drive, and gave it 20 GB of persistent storage, I guess that it didn't work out.

Is there another way to make the USB persistent?

Thanks also for the tip about SD cards.

Thanks very much. I remember using MKUSB once before, and I appreciate the refresher course. It's funny how Rufus will make some ISO files persistent, but not others. Thanks again.
