The ' File has unexpected size' Error implies that a file in the repository is not right - possibly the repository is undergoing an update itself.
These normally resolve without any user action if you try again later.
The Errors associated with Google Chrome indicates that the Google repositories have changed or added information concerning their software.
These changes can be expected during the support of software, but the update/upgrade process requires indication from the user that these changes are OK.
Opening a terminal and running this command
sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change update
allows the update process to accept the changes (you will need to enter your password).
Once this command has been run the Google Chrome error messages should be resolved.
Then there are a bunch of Warning messages.
If the Errors above are fixed, the Warnings shouldn't stop the updates running.
Re-run the updates and check the log. Post back with the output.

Is this what you would have expected and do I just need to wait for a day or two before running updates again to resolve this issue ?

Looks like the Google Chrome Errors are fixed.
Still showing a problem with the Ubuntu archive repository.
You can continue to wait or try switching repository.
Click Menu
Begin typing 'Software' into the search bar
When you see 'Software & Updates' offered as a suggestion click it.
Click the pull down against the 'Download From' section and chose 'other'
You should then be offered a list of servers from which you can select a local one.
Enter your password when asked.
Then try updates to see if the one chosen works better.

I followed your last set of instructions and everything worked like a dream - system is now fully updated.
Many thanks for all your help and patience - just goes to show, that with perseverance, you can educate an idiot ;D
