@Jerry
Thanks Jerry.
I've solved the issue here by one of avoidance! I've abandoned LL4 (for now), and the problem posed by being unable to switch back & forth between the graphics drivers (with nVidia 396), and the bricking up problem (with nVidia 390) and returned to using LL3.8, as noone's come up with a fix (me neither).

It's actually a pleasure being back with LL3.8 again - I'd forgotten just how smooth and trouble-free it is, and I have another 3 years. I also love it's default icon set. Hopefully by LL5, Ubuntu will have worked out how to get the graphics card switcher to work again.

@Jerry ,

See, I don't give bad advice

I wasn't following your advice - I had gone back to LL3.8 a few days ago.
Regretfully, your tone in reply #5 was aggressive - not swearing and using a less 'dictatorial' approach would help ...

Thanks

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

I have no problem with people being straight, that is in fact my style but it's balanced with politeness. And saying "And you are right, people are free to mess up their Linuxes as they wish" is misquoting me and inaccurate. I said "People are entitled to download proprietary software to their pc." You imply that proprietary software will mess up peoples pc's can free software do that too? Of course it can. You have changed since you joined, I respectfully suggest you go over our Rules one more time. We have a good spirit in this Forum and I will jealously protect our image.

Yes, some people need to learn it the hard way.
Do NOT install proprietary sh*t to your Linux.

Ps. @EB , was it really a 'HELPFUL TIP' ?

People are entitled to download proprietary software to their pc. Please don't be preachy in this regard. And yes, his post is useful. Some of you posts lately have been rather aggressive. May I suggest you revisit our Forum Rules. These are not the tones on which our Forum runs. Cheers.

@Jerry ,

To be honest and truthful, you must sometimes be straight. It may not always be so polite but I rather risk being polite
than give false / wrong / crazy / dangerous information to you guys.
And you are right, people are free to mess up their Linuxes as they wish

You can't fine-tune sh*t after a couple of major kernel updates.
Instead, you caused many crashes already, some people are just
not able to report them, because their screens are screwed up

@EB
I found that both Linux Lite 4.0 and Linux Mint 19 would not fully reboot (stuck on a blank black screen), following installation of nVidia driver version 390 on my dual video card laptop: completely bricked up, as you forewarned in your tutorial above in post #1 !

So, following reinstallation of both operating systems, I installed nVidia driver version 396 instead, religiously following your tutorial.  So far, so good.

However, following installation of the 396 nVidia driver,  the NVIDIA X Server Settings application now wont open.  This means I'm unable to switch back and forth between the Intel and nVidia cards, which I could do with nVidia drivers earlier than the 390 one.

I'd be really grateful for any advice/feedback on how to fix this one ...
Sincere thanks in advance for any help with this bugbear  8)

@EB

I installed nvidia-driver-396 (open source) as you suggested, but now the NVIDIA X Server Settings app wont open.
It opened before, when I had nvidia-driver-390 installed, so what's gone wrong - how do I fix this? I should mentionthat I don't have a Fermi-based GPU.

Note that  the nvidia-396 has dropped its support for Fermi-based GPUs - see https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4656/~/list-of-fermi-series-geforce-gpus
for a list of  Fermi series GeForce GPUs (information taken from the Manjaro community forum on 15 June 2018).

Maybe worth mentioning one or two other points that were raised in the tutorial here:

(1) The ukuu app is a bit of a duplication of the pre-installed Kernel Installer, already found in Lite Tweaks. The main differences are that ukuu gives a much more detailed list of kernel releases than Kernel Installer, and alerts you with a Desktop notification if there are any new kernels available to install (currently 4.17,  9 June 2018). However, everytime you boot up, ukuu repeatedly nags you about about the latest kernel with its onscreen notification.

(2) TLP (for managing battery use), again already listed in Lite Tweaks.

Hoping this is useful.
