Thanks, ralphy. I changed the main repository based on search for best to http://mirror.atlantic.net/ubuntu. I'll stick with the default lite software repo since it appears Jerry is maintaining it. Not to mention I am a little hesitant to mess with text files.  :-[

You're welcome Coastie. Indeed, if you have no reasons to switch software repo or don't feel comfortable doing so, just don't do it.

For clarification, I maintain the servers hosting the packages in that specific mirror but the packages themselves are all from Linux Lite developers, mirrored across multiple servers (such as unlockforus) for distribution. Every package that's hosted there is a mirror (copy) of the work done by Linux Lite developers initially published on their main server, and not a work of my own. That's what a mirror server is, a package duplicate of the primary server.

For most users switching to local/closer mirrors will yield better speeds, specially when updates become available in the default repository and everyone tries to get those updates at the same time. For example, my own tests shows that users in Germany can get a response from unlockforus mirror in @27 milliseconds, while a response from repo.linuxliteos.com was never under 70 milliseconds. The reason for recommending mirrors is because it really helps most users and also alleviates the load that the main Linux Lite server has to handle over time, as Linux Lite grows in popularity and it is embraced by many more users.

This is something developers don't talk about much in the open because it is part of what happens in the backend, which is by nature not part of what end-users have to deal with. Now imagine 10,000 - 20,000 users downloading updates from the same server as they become available. It can be, and it is, quite stressful for a server. Then, there is the costs associated with managing and expanding the project's infrastructure... it isn't cheap (I'm not a Linux Lite server admin or anything but I have some experience on this), specially for those who don't count with a Google's budget at their disposition not one of their datacenter. Linux projects and users alike benefit from having and using multiple mirrors.

I decided to host a mirror for Linux Lite because I consider myself a little more aware than the average user about what it takes to run a project such as this. That's also the reason why I like to donate and encourage others to donate to the project whenever it is within ones possibility to do so. Developers are passionate and dedicated human beings that sacrifice themselves in many ways and don't brag about it. The community support is an imperative contribution to make devs lives a little easier (just a little), and more importantly to the success of the software we love.

Sorry for seeming stupid and preferring Linux - I just don't know any better.
