CUPS error

New to Linux Lite. Need some help with getting a wireless printer up and running.

Keep running into:
"CUPS server error"
"There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-internal-error.' "
when attempting to add the printer via System/Printers menu. I tried installing the Brother drivers via the Wireless Wizard off their website. Didn't seem to have any effect. Still same result.

While I have some experience with Linux and the command line, this one is beyond what I know how to troubleshoot. Is this a printer settings issue, a firewall issue, or something else? Everything else seems to work - just not the printer.

What is this telling me? I know CUPS = Common Unix Printing Server, but am not knowledgeable enough to know what to look for after getting this type error message.

Background info:
Just moved my elderly mother (age 80) to Fedora and ran into a problem with the top feeder on her Brother all-in-one printer/scanner. It can scan from the glass, but not from the top feeder. No issues with printing.

It's her first time off Windows (since our Apple IIe when we were kids in the 80s). Since this change is just now a thing for her, she won't be completely set on sticking with any version of Linux for a few months - so I have a window of time to adjust things as needed.

WHO: Me - Not any kind of power user on any platform (windows, linux, or anything else). I've used linux off & on since the 1990s. I've been on linux full time now for about 3 years (Fedora & OpenMandriva, plus the same bit of distro hopping the average user does).

WHAT: After my Mom's computer (Core i5) effectively came to a halt, she agree to let me do some upgrades and install linux. Changed out her old 5400 rpm HDD to an SSD to clear up that bottleneck, changed her wifi card from a B/G/N to an AX, and installed Fedora Workstation thinking that would be the best chance for a "works out of the box" type situation.

It did, except for that top feeder. And after seeing how much of a difference that made, apparently my Mom started chatting up my sister about it. My sister is now asking me to do her computer when she gets back from vacation. Similar hardware situation, approximately 15 year old laptop (don't know what model it is yet - and neither does she, "it's a computer?").

Total of about $125 for an SSD, Wifi6 card, and a drive enclosure for turning that old HDD into an external storage drive. And she got to avoid the "new computer" thing that elderly people dislike.

WHY1: That puts me in a position of wanting to standardize all 3 laptops onto the same operating system in order to give myself the best chance at becoming familiar with it and support my Mom & Sister when they inevitably will screw things up. Which is how I came by Linux Light. I did a search for the linux distro with the best chance of working "out of the box" and it seems Ubuntu has moved back in front of Fedora since the last time I looked (+10 years ago). Linux Lite gets listed as good for older laptops that would benefit from a lightweight distro and Ubuntu's hardware support. Using a light distro gives these laptops the potential for the longest possible service life.

I keep all of my data stored on an external drive, so I can do full installs all day without bothering anything. I jumped in with a full drive partition because that's what I'd be doing on my Mom and sisters computers.

WHY2: If I can get passed this printer issue, then LL is an option. It's already proven to work on my setup with a 2nd monitor that has speakers built into it (sounds great!). If I can't get passed the printer issues - then LL is not an option.

WHY3: I also have another 15 year old laptop I plan on turning into a linux box so my 8yo can play Minetest. It's an AMD and a bit slower (was cheaper) than mine or my Mom's computers - was a hand-me-down from the In-laws. I figure that would be a good test run of a less capable laptop to see how LL handles old hardware. But I need to get this printer issue fixed first.

How do I fix this?

Problem updating - ubuntu repository 404 error

I was trying to update my system today, and for the first time i got an error message, and after searching a bit around the forum i am still uncertain of what to do. Here is the part of the log displaying the error message.

it seems that a IP is unreachable, so i cant download the updates, i can however still read the change logs of what the updates will do, i can see the updates fine, but i cant get them.

so i hope a very wise person out there can help a "newbie" out, and yes i did try "apt update" in the terminal- sadly it did not work.

Added after posting: I forgot to mention that the update should not have any problems due to software, everything is quite vanilla in the system, and i did update without problems until today.

Thunar crash with Ctrl-H hidden files toggle

Hello,

My old Thinkpad hardware gave up the ghost, so finally got a new Lenovo where I promptly installed LL 8 (previously on 4gb RAM with LL 6.6). 😀
I noticed immediately that Thunar kept crashing with my chosen treeview configuration whenever I used Ctrl-H to toggle hidden files.
Ctrl-H just closes Thunar without any alert. This happens if you try twice in a row, and the 3rd time, it shows a dialog "Failed to execute default File Manager" Input/output error.

I always use the treeview (similar to Win Explorer habits at work), so don't like going back to shortcuts in the sidepane to avoid this bug.

Searching led me to this bug https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=19127 and their fix available in thunar>=4.21.5
My thunar version shows 4.20.7

Not sure how the update and fix cycles work between ubuntu and LL, so my question is:
i. can we hope to get a fix with usual LL updates or do we have to wait for a version upgrade (since LL 8 is based on ubuntu 26.04 LTS) ?
ii. any idea by when a fix would be available ?

Web AI suggested I try to build thunar locally, but not sure if that will introduce more bugs from the new codebase and/ if there'll be any impact on updates in the future?

Only workaround I've found so far is careful double-clicks with the trackpad/mouse, which is what I'm trying to get used to.
Interestingly the Ctrl-H works randomly sometimes after having used the trackpad for a few times, but then Thunar crashes again.

Any tips or helpful suggestions will be much appreciated.

The boot entry was not created

I installed linux lite 8.0 successfully , its boot files were created too , but the boot entry was not created.
I tried reinstalling it but it didn't work either.

The problem

Today (September, first), there was an update for some packages. Among those, there was also OpenShot Video Editor.
After running the upgrade/update, I wanted to test the App so I clicked the button. Nothing happened. Since it is a huge program, it takes longer to load. At least, that was what I thought in the beginning. Tried the Menu shortcut, but still nothing.

I can't figure out how obvious is this for everybody, but for me, this is what happens (see the line ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'qt_api'):

The cause

Now, if you use the CLI (like I do) for updating the system, you are probably familiar with the following:

I can't explain why this happens for at least two months. Maybe the Python team is overwhelmed for some reason, maybe the Ubuntu team. It matters less from my perspective. It's a fact.
So, if you connect the two codes listed above, the situation gets clear: The postponed updates to Python trigger a chain of events. Among those, is also the OpenShot error (No module named 'qt_api).

The solution

From my perspective, pushing the Python packages update, might be very risky. I avoid this kind of adventures, unless I want to test what happens. This is not the case, so:

I went on the download site of OpenShot and I downloaded the AppImage version. This works for years in such cases like this (various errors in the latest version):

To make it run, if you are less familiar with this approach, you need to prefix it with the path where it resides. Let's say:

/home/OpenShot/

This makes the command look like this:

You need to remember to change the file's attribute and make it executable, in order to make it work.

I hope that helps. The solution fits any program that you need to run, as long as it has an .AppImage version.

VirtualBox Desktop Resize

Just installed 8.0 as a VirtualBox Guest on my windows machine. Updated everything (including the kernel) and went and installed the Guest Additions.

The automatic resizing of the guest display doesn't seem to work. Not sure where the failure is if anyone has any idea?

I have used many Linux OS's over the past years on my current Windows 11 version on my HP G62 455DX 14 year old laptop with VMWare Workstation 17 and find Linux Lite to be one of the best so far. Can't go more than 8 GB total physical RAM on Host so the 2.2 GB allocated for Linux Lite VM works great. Keep up the good work everyone.

Only Prompted for Browser Updates

I am running LL 8.0, and for weeks it seems the only updates I get prompted for are for my browsers (FireFox and Brave). Is anyone else having this issue? It seems odd because in the same amount of time, my other computer that is still on LL 7.x has been getting all other types of updates.

Please add a Cinnamon version!

In my Linux journey, I have tested Linux Mint (unstable), PopOS Cosmic (confusing and lacking necessary features), and now LMDE. When I reviewed LL 8.0, I was super impressed by the features and philosophy! It is certainly not light in features. So, I installed it immediately, thinking how bad could Xfce be? Well it was bad enough that I immediately left and installed LMDE. If there was only a Cinnamon, or other well-featured desktop, version, then LL is where I would be. This distro is far too good to be allowed to languish in an "Xfce only" playground, IMHO. Anyway, excellent work!

Linux Lite 8.0 running on an old (11/17/2011) Sony Vaio

Some days ago I installed LL 8.0 for someone I know, on a very old machine.
Except some difficult time I had with the weird partitioning (GPT+BIOS-GRUB), I am very happy to let you know that everything went OK (set aside the snail speed...) and if you have anything close to the tech specs showed below, you'll be able to use it fairly well.

Very Unstable

Hello there.
I've been searching for a niche and lightweight Linux distro and I've found this Lite. I had Mint before but it was very heavy and easy and not niche. Arch or Debian are stable but they are not niche to me and Ubuntu was heavy too because my PC heats up fast. In computer works my habit is to look for the underrated one instead of popular one And the game center in this distro looked helpful for keeping Windows programs.
But when I said I wanted Linux with challenge I was looking for challenge in setup and configuration, not instability.
My specs are:
Lenovo ThinkCenter
Intel I5 quad core 3470S
8GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 2500
500 GB HDD

I've downloaded the latest version form its official site and when I installed it after a few days it did a big update. I also installed Wine to work with some Windows applications.
But I ran to several problems.
I enabled a screensaver and when I leave computer idle for a while, it will freeze. I thought it is because of Wine programs but it wasn't. I disabled all of screen locks so it was solved.
When I bring the power menu and and select a option with keyboard, it will all freeze.
I was trying to install Lazarus IDE for my work, but when I installed one of its dependencies or clicked on its launch then the system froze.
For each freeze I'd have to force shutdown by holding the power button and then the partitions become inaccessible when crashed. So I'd have to return to windows and run chkdsk.
I've heard about Ctrl+Alt+F3 or F1 or Backspace, but none of them helped.

Also, when I pause the VLC Media Player and then resume, mutes and unmutes several time each time. But it doesn't happens if I resume after lesser than 9 seconds.

If is there any solution to this, I'd be glad to keep working with this distro. But if nothing works, I'd have no choice but to move to new distro and abandon all the good memories.
I hope I'm posting this in right place because its my first ever time posting in a Linux forum.

And off topic, first time I found this distro in a video which was comparing Linux and Windows running in 512 MB of RAM and it was using Lite, but the system requirements in the Linux Lite site was 2GB of RAM. And if Lite has such problems while using 1GB of RAM when idle, then what about Arch which needs minimum of 512MB ? is this one gonna freeze even more?

this is a new/recent 'problem' occurring now, after SEVERAL attempts - today. i recognize parts & pieces w/in the report log: (1) MOST recently (yesterday) installed & dinked-around the "librewolf" browser...resulting in my own mixed experience a/o pos./neg. satisfaction. (2) also, recently & questionably successful / plus prob. MORE directly related to the 'reading package lists...release file' fetch failure mentioned - sysbench (an open-source, scriptable, multi-threaded benchmarking tool used to evaluate the performance of CPU, memory, file I/O, and database systems) @ https://github.com/akopytov/sysbench

No Auto Login after installation

I installed LL8.0, tried OEM and regular installation. Made sure it had Auto Login checked (tried several times just to be sure I did not miss it)

PROBLEM:
After restart, it asks for a password.

When I go to GUI where it has Auto Login ENABLE or DISABLE, and it shows user name - I click on ENABLE and it says saved. then restart and it is the same.

I also checked

I also installed all the updates after the installation. Reboot - the same, still asking for a password.

Another strange thing that I cannot explain.
I think i remember installing LL8.0 from exact same USB on another computer and I think that installation did not ask for user password after restart. How is that possible?

suggestion: more intuitive search button(s) for website/forums

Hi Jerry & team,

I'd like to suggest an improvement for the website/forums.

Currently to search within the forums the user need to go to the top and choose "Search" amongst the buttons to access different sections of the website. Not only is such a search button usually meant for searching a website, but in our case it is also not obvious that it is actually meant to search the forums! And after selecting the forums there is nowhere an obvious search field usually found within forums.

Therefore I'd like to suggest to
* convert the current search button on top to a button to search the website
* to add somewhere within the forums more prominently a button to search the forums

It could look like this (if the code allowed such implementation that is of course):

So, the logrotate configuration file named cloud-init-base has a duplicate log rotation entry for /var/log/cloud-init*.log.

The path of addressing this failure depends on the answer to the question whether cloud-init needs to/should be available in Linux Lite? cloud-init is an initialization system designed for cloud instances (AWS EC2, Azure VMs, Google Cloud, OpenStack, etc.).

For people not using cloud-init functionality (I expect it to be the vast majority of Linux Lite users), the resolution can be to just remove cloud-init:

Otherwise, the duplicate logrotate entry needed to be fixed.

Same seems to apply to the next version of Linux Lite 8.2 - remove or fix
